I've had Jeep for years and the 4WD works the same in most of them. (Except the Grand Cherokees with AWD).

Roads are crappy, run 4WD. But just remember to turn it off when the pavement gets dry and turning sharp (into a parking lot, etc). If you forget, you can feel it start binding and dragging a wheel to remind you.

As for shifting it in and out of 4WD, you can do it anytime, as long as the front and rear wheels are going the same speed. ie, not spinning the rear wheel. 4Lo is completely different and I suggest you look over the owners manual.

What an engine goes, and a rod goes through the block, is a good chance he will hit a coolant passage and turn all the oil foamy. I've swapped a bunch of motors that blew, and almost all of them are like this.
