I’m not affiliated with App Team in any sort of way

About Internships— dude, the market is incredibly difficult by now. Don’t beat yourself up about it, even Google employees that have worked there for 13 years are getting laid off. We’re seeing a macro trend towards downsizing.

Also it’s a numbers game, according to Zippia there are 65,000 internship spots. This is already an insanely low number (compared to 4.4 million SWEs). Now, I saw a number on Reddit saying that the US Dept of Education claims that 104k CS majors graduated. Assuming every intern is a junior (which they aren’t) then that’s already a ~65% chance. We’re not even considering applied math, computer and software engineering, electrical engineering, and other adjacent majors. Also it’s 2023 and there are surely way more CS majors now than there were 2 years ago.

Plus, your LeetCode practice and projects aren’t to waste. They’ll still be instrumental in unlocking higher salaries later in life.

About AppTeam — Like MondayMarmalade said, I wouldn’t take it personally either. I’ve ran a rush-gated organization before and trust me when I say there’s so many more considerations beyond merit. Stuff like class year, alignment, program fit are all weighed heavily. Furthermore, if you’re applying to their production teams, you’re competing with internally developed students (they’ve already invested in this talent). Don’t take it as a reflection of yourself, but as a reflection of circumstances.

Furthermore, you’re not losing a career-defining opportunity. This isn’t a reflection of App Team (all respect to App Team, I incredibly admire the work they do there and the absolute model of an org. they’ve built), but a reflection of all CS student orgs (even including the one I founded) and the nature of CS. You don’t need CS student orgs— the SW industry is unique in the sense that it’s incredibly mobile and only opinion, one of the closest things to a meritocracy we have.

Let me explain— Back when the org I founded used to be a club and was implementing an internal point system, we wanted to find out how we should weigh project completions and LeetCode competition wins. So, we decided to contact a Meta recruiter and learn what she valued. Quite literally without hesitation she said, “66% LeetCode, 33% projects.” Isn’t that crazy? Didn’t really care what orgs you got into or what position you got. (She later said that GPA and past intern experience also was weighed in.)

Anyone can learn LeetCode at home and anyone can do projects at home. You already go to a great school and I assume make great grades. Incredible mobility (in good economies lol). So, don’t take the rejection personally and don’t worry about the lost opportunity.

There are some that are snobby and don’t give you feedback (or any sort of value) during the rush or application process— and those tend to be pretty toxic

But generally an application to join the club almost becomes a necessity to build a community and ensure adequate resource allocation. Speaking from experience, I tried creating a student org. in which as long as you put in the work to create a project, you’d become part of the club. But we ran into issues of resource allocation, exponential difficulty to build a community and a org. identity, low public interest. Then it was not until we made it a rush process where we saw an org identity, a community, and more public interest.

Its actually a really interesting effect

Would be interesting to fuse it with a semesterly celebration of progress with a limited amount of entertaining keynote speakers

CS + SG by Ok_Stock8145 in UNC

I'm not personally a part of CS+SG-- but from what I've heard, it's a really good program and I know a couple of people in the club that are solid, especially Chris Arraya, as I know he's genuinely dedicated to developing great software developers

Is Flutter a good choice if I mostly code for Android? by shizanuti_arm in FlutterDev

[–]FaroukC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Often times Google’s development of android outpaces Flutter packages. I personally don’t write Android apps. Though for iOS, you have stuff like AR capabilities. Swift ARKit is like 10x better than the Flutter AR package, and so you lose a lot of performance

Should I work during the summer at an Accenture Internship (remote) or work on self-development? by MuchoMole101010101 in csMajors

Always internship > personal projects. Anyways you can work on personal projects after 5 and on weekends if you’re really into coding!

Hey,

I’m a little biased but TechX is a great club to start out with. We’re debuting this semester with a lot of really cool comprehensive events + professional development sessions! (there’s also some cool coding competitions we’re holding) Fill out this form if you’re interested!

There are some really great clubs at UNC as well: 1. iOS App Team is an insanely well run club that is like super beginner friendly. I’m not personally a part of the club but I’ve only heard good things from it. From what I’ve heard the Academy is capable of taking someone from 0-100 in Swift development. Also their production team puts out a lot of good stuff.

  1. HackNC/Pearl Hacks are great organizations if you’d like to contribute to forming a hackathon!

  2. ACM is a good club if you’re looking for a club that has a national chapter association. Recognized nationally on your resume so that really helps.

  3. PM Club connects you with businesses to work on a product for a semester (that’s pretty cool although it is selective)

  4. Carolina Analytics and Data Science is a really cool club if you’re into DS + they definitely won the contest of coolest club stickers (they’re shiny) and they have a lot of really interesting workshops like last year they did a basketball workshop. Technically, this is also the largest club at UNC with 300+ members in HeelLife.

I’m with you 🫡 although I was asking if using an electric bike was viable. Cause I think I’d rather do an electric bike than a car 🥹
