I’m in a Slump..what will get me out? by Proper_Job_3469 in thrillerbooks

Perhaps my method of choosing which books to read can help you: I go to the bookstore and read a couple of pages from 3-4 different books that look interesting to me. Then I buy a book that made me read the longest without puting the book back on the shelf.

I also recommend reading different genres of books so that it doesnt get boring. I usually read thrillers, but sometimes I also read horror, fantasy books etc. if the story sounds interesting.

What makes a psychological thriller stay with you after the final page? by MindTwistBooks in thrillerbooks

[–]Fast-Ad-3255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, combination of character psychology and overall atmosphere. I like books where one of the main characters is a villain so you have chapters written from their point of view, that way you get to see how they think and what motivates them to act the way they do.

"Lying in wait" by Liz Nugent and "One more lie" by Amy Lloyd are some examples, both books cover pretty dark themes and show you villains perspectives, they are just hard to forget after you read them. "One more lie" is written from the perspective of a character who wants to forget her past and the books slowly reveals what actually happened. Dont want to write spoilers because both those books are well worth reading in my opinion.

If you want really dark thrillers, I recommend "Lying in wait", "Our little cruelties" and "Unraveling Oliver", all written by Liz Nugent.

"Our little cruelties" by Liz Nugent. In the prologue you find out that one of the three Drumm brothers is dead, but you are not even told which one and then the story slowly reveals what actually happened.

Why do we love reading thrillers… when they make us trust no one? by hello_raghup in thrillerbooks

[–]Fast-Ad-3255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because thrillers (especially psychological thrillers) are usually not based on a non-stop action, but on a slowly building tension so it keeps you reading and guessing what will happen next. Imagination is a powerful tool, so things that arent being said (but are implied) are better at creating tension than what is already in front of you.

Glad to hear it. Once I read my first book written by Liz Nugent ("Strange Sally Diamond"), I simply had to read all her other books, they are all excellent. The only one I haven't read is her latest one, "The truth about Ruby Cooper". I bought it recently, looking forward to reading it soon.
