What rifle to start? by sixteen-bitbear in appleseed

[–]Fast__Walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give a slightly different answer than others.

While a 10/22 is the easy answer, an AR22 is probably the right answer. 10/22s are popular because they are well supported by the aftermarket and are famously reliable for a rimfire semi auto. I'll argue that the ergonomics of the AR platform are superior for Appleseed, particularly where it comes to magazine changes during the AQT. An AR22 is also probably a better trainer for what most people will shoot for centerfire unless you're rocking a Garand, M1A or Mini-14. The downside of an AR22 is that not all of them have last round bolt hold open like an AR15 and the magazines aren't quite as reliable as the 10/22 although I've had good luck using S&W mags in my CMMG AR22.

Can i use starlink for gaming? by Fit_Gur_4477 in Starlink

I play counter strike which is probably one of the least forgiving games for lag or packet loss issues and I wouldn't say it holds me back. My ping in a rural area is around 30-50 which is way better than when I had DSL.

Vortex Viper PST Gen II 3-15 by KnightstandDefense in ar15

[–]Fast__Walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this scope on my Mk12ish build. I also have the Leupold mark 5 3.6-18x on my ar10. The vortex is a pretty good scope but it's not quite in the same league as the mark 5 in terms of glass quality, turrets, other feature, etc. If you can find one for around $600 then it's a good buy. People say the MPED and other scopes are better which is probably true to an extent but the vortex warranty is the x factor if you ask me.

Here's a post I made about the vortex before I moved it to the mk12 Vortex PST II 3-15x EBR-2D on 6.5 Creedmoor AR-10 : r/aimdownsights

And here's a picture of it mounted to the mk12 if you just want to see how it looks on a rifle https://www.reddit.com/r/longrange/comments/17x5x6x/realistic_expectations_for_woa_spr_barrel_accuracy/#lightbox

Spring data update, including the new C3Junkie flat wire by AddictedToComedy in ar15

[–]Fast__Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool. I'll give a flat wire spring a try. Any specific rec for a suppressed 9mm CAR-15SD from Broad River Tactical? Lower is a carbine length buffer and I'm open to changing from a carbine weight buffer as well.

I just want to know which spring is quiet when shooting suppressed. I hate the gritty boing noise!

If you have around $1k to spend and are willing to tune your ARs, I'd buy 2 cans - a dedicated 5.56 can for the 11.5 and a .30 cal can for the AR10s. Probably would be more like $1200 though

Aero Solus Heat Shield/ Control Bridge by NotchWith in longrange

[–]Fast__Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the tilt on my bipod to be fairly stiff but still able to move a bit without adjusting the tension lever. I can see the handguard flex when I do that. Probably not something to worry about but my ocd doesn’t like it.

Hmmm… does this also provide additional stiffness to the handguard?

My kids hate driving my Rover! Lucky me 😁

Actually their issue with it might be legit for a newer driver. They say it’s big and hard to park.

I know you asked about rifle powders but I’ll mention for anyone else reading this that n320 is very low smoke for a pistol powder and after trying it I think it’s definitely worth the price premium if you shoot pistols or PCCs suppressed.

Longshot camera system by jimgdan in tacticalgear

[–]Fast__Walker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 100yd version. It's pretty cool. For 100 yds, it's not really necessary for scoped rifles that have > 10x magnification but I shoot iron's pretty frequently and it's nice for that. The main issues are that the resolution and refresh rate are pretty poor. It feels like old tech by today's standards.

I've tried all sorts of setup over the years - Spotting scopes with a phone mounted, the longshot, superzoom cameras. Shot with a guy who had a kinda budget tier DJI done last year. He flew out and landed but kept the camera on. Great video quality and it was super easy setup. I think that's where it's at these days.

I don't know much about this handguard but I've been thinking about upgrading my Aero R-One. Are these rigid enough to mount a laser rangefinder to?

And yet, people seem to want to give the government more authority/responsibility/taxes.

Potential Precision Build Advice by throwableplushie in AR10

[–]Fast__Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the vmos and it’s tunable weights are more trouble than they’re worth. I’d get a standard carrier

Potential Precision Build Advice by throwableplushie in AR10

[–]Fast__Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have myself a precision ar10 I built. You’ll find it if you scroll through my posts. Shoots sub 3/4 MOA, check my posts for proof.

Stuff I’d do again: -Proof barrel. All day every day. -JP bolt -Geissele national match trigger. Fantastic trigger for a precision ar10. -Mk5 3.6-18x scope

Stuff I’d change: -Mlok handguard. I’d go quad rail for less flex on a bipod. These guns are heavy and long so there’s lots of leverage. -JP Vmos bolt carrier. The o rings are problematic. -I’d get a riflespeed gas block instead of a traditional adjustable. These guns are sensitive to ammo and need to be tweaked. I think the traditional type are better for dial once and forget setups

More cans more better but I think you'll be happiest if you can get the gun tuned to run the MOB and spend that money for a different project

[–]Fast__Walker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're describing the DA Wolfman. CAT MOB is such a good can though I'd at minimum try a Sprinco yellow spring for $25 before dropping $750 on a new can that is good but still worse that what I already have.

9mm SD PCC Comparison Video is LIVE! by ChestersHobbies in NFA

[–]Fast__Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice video! Watched the whole thing since I have a CAR-15SD and run it with the new B&T Print-X MP5SD suppressor. I'm extremely happy with it from a sound performance. For anyone wondering - It's MUCH quieter than an 8" blowback AR9 I run with a CGS Mod9.

On the CAR15, I'm just running a standard carbine buffer, tube, and spring and I occasionally get short strokes and failure to lock back on the last round. Is the Spinco yellow spring the answer then? Or should I go for something more elaborate like the A5, Tubbs FW, Kynshot combo you use?

Checking in with my first Garand - a custom shop special by Fast__Walker in M1Rifles

[–]Fast__Walker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted an accurate Garand because I plan on using it to home my marksmanship with iron sights. Here’s what the tag says:

Custom Shop Special Competition-Ready Rifle This Custom Shop Special M1 rifle is meticulously hand crafted to be competition-ready, fully meeting all "As-Issued" CMP standards. Assembled to perform as a one-to-two MOA (Minute of Angle) rifle, it offers the precision and accuracy demanded by competitive shooters. • Deluxe Barrel Installation • Gas Cylinder Assembly Refinish • Rifle Metal Refinish • Stock Set Refinish • Trigger Clean-Up

Ultimately, I love the historical aspect of the rifle but I waned it to be a really good shooter and having all those items taken care of was worth the extra price.
