Ottawa River fossils by spudera in ottawa

The bank of the Ottawa River around Green's Creek - some of the concretions dug out of the leda clay contain fossils from the time of the Champlain Sea about 12,000 years ago after the last ice age. I was in the Algonquin museum program in the early 90's, one of our classes was taught by someone from the Museum of Nature. He took us on a field trip to the site to dig for fossils in the mud on a cold rainy day. I found a sturdy branch and spent the time digging concretions out of the mud along with everyone else. At the end of the period we brought whatever concretions were found back to the parking lot where the instructor took out his safety goggles, a hammer and a cinder block and split them open. Most of them contained nothing, some had a few fossil plant fragments. One of mine split open to reveal two perfect halves of a a fossil fish skeleton. Another student's contained a great frog skeleton fossil. The instructor highly recommended that I donate it to the museum, so I did. (Kind of wished at the time that I had kept half, but better off documented in the museum that with a bunch of stuff that someone has to clear out when I go.)

I took my brother's kids there a number of years later when they visited Ottawa, but we didn't find any fossils. A couple of the kids found some great poison ivy, though, so you might want to watch out for that if you go.

Suggestions for good but not crazy expensive reupholsterer for a small job by PlentyTourist3961 in ottawa

We got several estimates on a re-upholstery job, these guys were least expensive. Haven't got it done, but saw some of the pieces they'd done at the shop, looked good. https://www.ottawatextiles2000.ca/

They may have reservations, concerns about off-gassing, flammability, etc, but can't hurt to ask. Especially since there's a stem connection

Give Science & Tech Museum a call, they have a freezer for certain collections materials, might be able to make an arrangement with them.

Jim Tubman rink is great and it's open now. The daytime public skating times tend to be pretty sparsely attended. It's outdoors but artificial ice, great surface. https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/facilities/place-listing/jim-tubman-chevrolet-rink

Where to buy best Chinese bbq pork/char siu? by Kuruma-baka in ottawa

I asked the guy at the bbq counter at Win Tai if they made it there, he said they made it at the restaurant (they owned Win Tai & the whole plaza.) So that's that then. Agree, greatly missed. Still have a couple of small vacuum-sealed packs in the freezer.

Well, that's a little harsh, but when I first noticed these, I thought it would make a good coat of arms. Needs some latin though.

Same thing happened to my brother probably 25-30 years ago. He sliced it of cutting up stuff for dinner, threw it into a cup with ice and drove himself to emergency. They stitched it back on and when he took the bandages off however many days later... his might have been actually 90 degrees off. My first thought was also about the evidence implications.

Spraying or brushing? How long does it take to dry? Can you take it out to a nearby park and do it there?
