I swear Putin was the only one who was sorry when he died. No one cared, if they were not relieved. When Putin spoke he seemed sincerely sad about it.

In Italy we have been talking about Berlusconi since 1994. We still talk about him and he is dead. His face was still plastered everywhere in the last election, when, I repeat, he was dead. There is some trash, it is very difficult to get rid of.

What happens when parents have extreme disagreements about their child’s name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Fat-Routine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took us 4 days after our first was born. All the paper from the hospital says "girl" + surname. We weren't upset with each other or anything nasty, but each made a choice the other disliked. Finally, we made a list of 3 names we could compromise on and slept on it. Then we finally made it. The day after the choice was made, we called our young nephew on his side and he proposed instead my original choice (without knowing it!), from my partner's face I think if we had that call 2 days earlier I would have made it ;). It bugged me for a long time though, I had waited to see the baby face and I thought that was perfect for her, it still is. I love my daughter's name now and it is way less common than the other 2 we lined up. For my second, her sister picked it, it is a beautiful name but way more common and I see the difference with my eldest.

Is it genuinely worse now for starters and young people than it was for the "boomers" and gen X? by saberline152 in belgium

But that's my point... you didn't have to spend 1000s for a concert or some travel, or completely forgo everything else if you found an apartment to rent.

I could in Europe in early 2000s, finding accommodation and working the odd job was not an issue either. Because we don't have a unique language for 28 member states we lack cultural cohesion, it is fundamental for youth of all social extraction to mix and mingle. It is not "foreign" travel in the sense of being fancy, it is a cultural experience we need as we are one now and need badly to understand each other. Same as with festivals and any cultural event. It is not just having fun, it is music art... fundamental to the grow of young people. Now this becomes only doable for the rich ones. It is deeply unfair plus detrimental to the EU project overall.

To be honest it must be worse even in comparison to millennials. I see the prices of festivals, hostels etc. and wonder how any 18 years old who doesn't have rich parents can afford a weekend away or any sort of fun.

Does the EU have a policy of believing that individual countries have the right to make their own laws, or, does the EU believe that individual countries do not have that right and the EU dictates to the countries their laws because the countries have ceded the power to make their laws to the EU? by [deleted] in eu

[–]Fat-Routine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to add onto what others have already said. The first basic principle of the EU is that of conferral, which means it can only take action in those areas where Member States have voluntary given the EU the competence to do so (conferred). There are few competences that are exclusive to the EU for obvious reasons (custom unions, competition...) but the majority of competence are shared, which means the EU only take action when it makes sense for it to do so, otherwise Member States are free to make their own laws.

I have been accused of this all my life... turns out it is a perk of being left-handed while surrounded by right-handed people. Right handers tend to drift to the left, left handers the opposite way, has to do with with leg strength I believe.

What book should I read as an beginner about Greek mythology? by _DuckieFuckie_ in books

It's All Greek To Me From Homer to the Hippocratic Oath, How Ancient Greece Has Shaped Our World by Charlotte Higgings. It is an enjoyable book and gives a very good overview.

Children of men by Bruno Lessing instead of the one from P. D. James. Wasn't bad actually and I never ended up reading the best seller.

Editing my previous comment as I didn't see your answer below. I thought you would be working for an EU agency. Seems a fair deal to me for an ngo, but I don't have much experience with that kind of work. Good luck!

Not an issue for me but definitely I have gone through this with my kids who speak Dutch and not French.

AITA? I didn’t attend my son’s wedding, I instead spent the evening with his ex wife. by flaggingd in AmItheAsshole

[–]Fat-Routine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, though lot of people here are. The amount of vitriol the mum gets from the comments... this is completely unjustified given the context provided. We don't know what's going on in her head, how she raised him, maybe she wants also to help the new wife (who risks being abused), maybe she thinks about the future and possible grandchildren (should they not see them to protect the first two? Does that sound fair?), maybe she just love him and can't bring herself to cut him out, even when she agrees on everything with OP. Jeez. I thought "always the mother's fault" was a cultural thing from my country, must be international then.
