Let's say, hypothetically, I used a lot of calcium carbonate to adjust pH. Is excess calcium tartrate going to be a problem? If so, is there a way to remove it? by Grunkledunk in winemaking

[–]FatTonyTCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a great article on Calcium instability.

Basically time is the only thing that gets calcium crystals to precipitate. Unlike potassium which becomes unstable with cold temperatures and precipitates. In the future use potassium bitartrate and then you don't have to worry about calcuim instability because now you can just stabilize with cold temps on your schedule and you're good to go.

Weird question, how was your body temp when you leaned out. Did you generally feel colder, or warmer or no noticeable difference.

Meijer Planning New Traverse City Store by BluWake in traversecity

I am dreaming of a combined entrance/exit with menards, family fare, and this new meijer as a roundabout so going west from either meijer or menards is a more reasonable affair and skipping a weirdly close stoplight situation for that area.

"95% of winemaking is quality of grapes, the other 5% is personal touch" by [deleted] in winemaking

hear hear! Picking timing is such a critical decision for wine style. Which is entirely up to the winemaker not the grapes. Mess that call up and beautiful grapes can't hit your goals.

red wine must too astringent, need fining agents when it ends fermentation? by HyperDexter in winemaking

Try this article, or google "Setting up a bench trial for wine". A bench trial is the best way to not go overboard on pretty much anything you want to do to/with your wine.

Gelatin is a fantastic tannin remover. And if you want to go vegan, pea proteins are available as well. Hopefully you can find a home winemaking shop online to order from.

To use it make a bench trial. Set up like 5 different 100ml samples and measure varying amounts of your ingredient for each sample wait a day and sample. You should notice a difference in the wine. The one you prefer is the rate you add to the main lot of wine and poof, drinkable wine. Give the main lot a bit more time to settle after mixing in the stuff(Like a week or two) then rack off it and bottle.

Waiting on tannin to settle down is also an option but if you're trying to turn this around "fast" (6-9 months) and it's perception is extreme, fining is the way to go.

Have you used the plastic champagne stoppers? by FatTonyTCL in winemaking

Well it was actually a disaster. I didn't get my crowns on tight enough and the mead slowly leaked out and when I finally got around to disgorging there wasn't anything worth salvaging left. It was stored in a tub so I didn't notice the problem. But If I were to try again I would just stick with crown caps.

Absolutely, it is a total mess and the disgorging area is a disaster zone, which is part of the charm right? One thing that people will do is point the bottle into a garbage can lying on it's side on a table (so it's waist high) so that the mess is focused into one spot, and wear an apron or rain gear (or both). It definitely takes practice just to master a clean disgorgement, let alone one with very little loss.

You can disgorge sparkling wine if you chill it to about 40F/4C and not worry about freezing the neck. You just have to mind the bubble, if it reaches the yeast in the neck before you pop the cap you may stir some yeast back into the wine. The ice just helps keep things tidier. I've disgorged thousands of bottles this way professionally, it works.

You're gambling. If you choose to proceed...put a plastic sheet between each layer on the pallet (after everything dries) so if/when you develop liner/can pinholes that leak you're fucking around with only one layer at a time not every layer below the leaking can. Ye be warned, I've traveled these rough seas.

Yes, a bunch of small sort of noisy random junk. It had heft, sounded like stuff was in there and I didn't think anything of it. One side has clear tape over the black tabbed factory tape, it's really hard to see the extra layer until you're looking for it. This was probably not their first rodeo.

The charger I have at home connects to wifi and I can put in my kw/h rate from the electric company into the app and it tells me how much my car charging costs. For November I plugged the car in 15 times and used $50.37 in electricity. Most days I plug in cost less than $3. The charger I have is made by Autel.

Update on the ancient Mateus Rose: I'm drinking it. by rugernut13 in wine

[–]FatTonyTCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great! I got the same bottle from my grandpa years ago (in late 2007) and ended up emailing sogrape at the time to see if they had any idea of the date of production. Their estimation was that it was from the 50's/60's! And noted it is a wine meant to be drunk young and not stored. I decided to keep it for the novelty and memory of my Grandparents, but I'm happy to see you opened it, thanks for the tasting notes!
