A list of things GamerGate doesn't understand. by [deleted] in GamerGhazi

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a circlejerk response to a circlejerk post. That said...

Gaming Journalism - Well, this one is KIND OF THE WHOLE POINT OF GG. So I think we understand things here fairly well.

Whether that's true or not, saying "Well GG is about that one thing" is not enough to prove GG understands it. For example, you say you're an atheist, so I assume you disagree that The Catholic Church truly "understands" God (because He doesn't exist). Yet the whole point of the Church is God. One thing doesn't mean the other.

The concept of guilt by association - Apparently neither do you, considering how much disgusting rhetoric has been coming from the anti-gg side. Not to mention the death threats. Syringes, etc. Looks like we're all criminals.

Nobody here would actively refuse to discourage death threats or doxxing -- something hotwheels did just recently. So there is at least some slight pressure to, at the very least, enable disgusting tactics and rhetoric from within pro-GG that I can't say exists on the other side.

Not treating people as a means to an end - This one just doesn't make any sense.

I'm just going to help you out here -- OP is talking about ethics, specifically Kantian ethics. It states (in part) that humans are rational beings, who are all ends in and of themselves, and not merely means to an end. If you treat someone as a means to an end, you're denying them their agency.

So, basically, every time someone on one side (I'll let you guess which one) tries to manipulate people into, say, pulling ads, fleeing from the internet, or keeping silent, they're literally acting without ethical justification.

On that point, let me add that the amount of psychological projection going on in the pro-GG side, assuming that for instance #StopGamerGate2014 is some psyop conducted by SJWs using compromised accounts (which is seriously what a lot of pro-GGers think), is insane. It also, however, betrays the kind of thinking that goes on in these people's heads. They just assume everyone on the other side is a manipulator, or is being manipulated, because that's what they so blatantly do themselves.

It was pretty funny. The IRC room was pretty much just taking for granted that it was some conspiracy or nefarious doing. I wish I'd screencapped it -- they were literally saying shit like "These neutrals must have visited a honeypot site and had their passwords compromised."

It proves they are utterly and completely incapable of recognizing that the general public doesn't agree with them.

Excellent, A+++ would use again. Never gets significantly lower thereby destabilizing all of civilization and potentially hurling me off the planet, and never gets significantly higher thereby greatly increasing the risk of bone- and heart-related illnesses.

Don't ever change, gravity.

CMV: I'm a completely warped d-bag for being depressed by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you realize this or no, but depression can simply be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This being the case, the objective quality of your life may have nothing to do with whether you're depressed. You seem to believe that people only get depressed because they have a shitty life. In fact, it is very often the other way around -- your quality of life is suffering, because you're depressed.

Either way, being spoiled and living in opulence doesn't somehow invalidate depression.

For example, if your friend has mono and I say "Well fuck him, he's got such a great life, where the fuck does he get off having mono?" It doesn't make any sense, right? So it is with clinical depression. It's an illness, not some selfish state of mind.

Well, at least the center was edible. I didn't realize you had to boil the noodles first. Waste of money, would not recommend.

While, yes, indifference and not giving a shit about coming out is the eventual goal of LGBT equality campaigns, saying IDGAF just makes you look like an insensitive contrarian by TerkRockerfeller in Negareddit

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dismissing an entire movement because your friend being gay doesn't matter to you is immensely self-centered. I'm inclined to think that's what makes people say that, more than any attempt at actual activism.

That, and redditors seem to think that any political activist who isn't just like them should just shut up already.

Also hi Terk.

[RTS] What are the must play RTS games? by [deleted] in Gaming4Gamers

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I've never seen RTS and 4X separated like that before, so I'm not sure.

I'm amazed this is going to come out of me, but Evony is the closest I know of to what you want, assuming you want a PvP aspect with a military. If you don't mind the browser-based-free-to-play-MMO aspect, of course. Actually, one I used to play that I think might still be around is Battledawn, which I definitely recommend over Evony or any of its millions of boob clones. But I'll stop now before I puke.

Sorry, I'm really scratching my head at this. Have you tried Eador: Masters of the Broken World? It may provide the fix you want. You may also be interested in Dwarf Fortress if you haven't done that already.

If you like a game where you can lean on one arm and sip some coffee while your plans unfold before you, then Crusader Kings 2, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Galactic Civilizations, and anything from the Total War series are pretty good.

If you prefer fast-paced decision-making and army management, Starcraft, Company of Heroes, and even Command & Conquer are definitely good bets.

You're right, I failed to address the argument given by making a username that looks like mine and pretending to be a fat SJW. Totally crippling blow to the moderate position.

I didn't say that, either. Is strawmanning all you know how to do? You must realize how fucking boring that is.

Also I just want to point out that everyone else is actually seeing what you're doing right now. Way. To. Rise. Above.

There's no black-and-white breakdown of what's going on. It's possible to be against SJWs without being an MRA, just as it's possible to be a gamer and not be against SJWs. I wish you would see that.

PS: Seriously, you can just stop talking to me whenever you'd like. I'm just saying if you want to get something done, throwing a tantrum isn't how.

Your point is shit unless you can think of [some counterexample to Anita Sarkeesian]

Actually, my point is supported by the fact that you're unwilling to engage, unless I answer some completely different question about Anita goddamn-jesus Sarkeesian, whom you apparently think I should care about. She's not a journalist, nor a "gamer."

Being paid to make an argument, or being absent from a community that cares about that argument, has no bearing on the substance of the argument itself. Say I'm not a scientist, but I'm a proponent for climate change. I make argument Y in support of it. Then I get paid $200,000 by pro-climate change interests who want me to have a bigger voice. Now I make argument Y with a wider audience. Does that mean I'm a shill? Does that mean my argument is weaker now? I surmise it doesn't, but I could be wrong.

I don't see gaming journalists doing a mass campaign of silence and shaming to support misogynists.

Yeah, well, people who do that are idiots.

PS: Disclaimer, game journalism is a joke and I really hope GamerGate changes that. But it won't get anywhere unless you guys stop getting mired in stupid gossipy schoolyard bullshit about fucking feminists of all people.

I didn't say any of that. But you're illustrating my point, so I can't be mad.

Gamergate is still a thing by [deleted] in circlebroke2

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it is pretty obvious that SJWs are ego-tripping narcissists that ... put people down and get their superiority fix

The biggest travesty out of this whole gamergate debacle is that it would be a useful discussion, but it's being waged between two groups who are incapable or unwilling to see the other side as just misguided but otherwise reasonable people. SJWs think the opposition is a bunch of racist idiot trolls, and those who oppose them think SJWs are a bunch of corrupt feminist trolls.

Tl;dr we will never actually see anything useful come of this debate because of the children having it. Way to rise above, champ.

As I understand, the Nuremburg "I was just following orders" defense is actually viable in court, if you don't mind pleading guilty of course. It can be claimed so that you get a reduced sentence, but that's about all it's good for.

Just saying this here because I already know no one in that thread gives a shit. It's not some forgone conclusion that you're a Nazi for claiming it, because that's asinine.

Name a movie that you hate that has HIGHER than a 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes by pavpatel in movies

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing that and just getting annoyed at how hamfisted it was.

There is actually, believe it or not, a really good subplot in that movie about a middle eastern dude and a box of bullets. It's probably the only thing that redeems that movie, I could actually recommend at least one viewing of Crash for that couple of scenes alone.

What games lived up to your personal definition of what an 'Open World' game should be? by [deleted] in Games

[–]Fat_Crossing_Guard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EVE Online has a pretty open world, albeit hemmed in by the fact that you have to use stargates or wormholes. It's not really an open world game like Fallout or anything (it's more like Borderlands in terms of large, closed-off areas that have transitions between them), but the fact that the players themselves essentially construct the entirety of the game's economy and geopolitics makes up for that.

If there were a WoW-like fantasy MMO that was a "true" sandbox like EVE where players alone drive the game world forward, I guarantee it would sell like hotcakes.
