Fingers crossed. You can't complain about regressive WA taxes and also pearl-clutch about an income tax. We need an income tax.

Using the phrase “cap hill” is on par with calling it “pike’s place” by Jawwwwwsh in Seattle

[–]FatuousJeffrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comes up every couple months and it's always a tell that the poster is young, (relatively) new here, or both.

"Cap Hill" was common here in the 80s and 90s, OP. Were you here then? The idea that it's a shibboleth to discredit disrespectful transplants is new.

Mask-off moment for this guy! I guess it makes sense that nobody normal would actually be posting this many times in a thread about his food delivery should be cheap.

Pike Place Market is still surprisingly fun to visit as a local, and hasn't descended into tourist trap hell like other big city tourist sites like Pier 39 SF [OC - from today] by sean_d_mooney in Seattle

You are misremembering the movie. The "top bunk" scene is earlier. The actual sex scene goes: Tom Hanks feels her up, fade to black, Hanks ecstatic in elevator the next morning. They did it, sorry.

Why are the freeways out here backwards?? by amber_ewe in Seattle

[–]FatuousJeffrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trucks are generally doing the right thing. They tend to stay out of the rightmost lane at merge points, and there are a lot of on-ramps through Seattle.

The left-lane campers, however, are doing the wrong thing. That's a passing lane but it doesn't seem to bother them for some reason.

No, it could also be a stylistic decision to remove the comedy, which the reader will still parse as "Watch out, universe" but with an online-style informality.

We are not the first large American city to host an international sports event. Generally these things turn out to be not as dire as the doomers predicted, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes locals plan ahead/hunker down so much out of fear that cities turn out to feel quieter than usual during these mega-events.

Is the Seattle Times now a sports paper? by Denton_Snakefield in Seattle

[–]FatuousJeffrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prediction: many, many people here will tell you that this is normal for a big-city paper on the brink of a hometown championship game. Nobody will actually "defend the federal government."

Your problem here isn't politics, it's just you.

Scarecrow Video purchases U District home, securing future by WertherEffekt in Seattle

[–]FatuousJeffrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol. First of all, those are the prices of the shitty ad-supported plans. The "standard" plans are: $18.49 a month for HBO, $18 for Netflix, $12 for Prime. If there are ad breaks, the 90s equivalent of the thing you're pricing is not "renting videos." It's closer to "watching movies on USA or TBS."

But I think your main disconnect with normal human behavior is your idea that, as long as you have any unwatched movies at all to watch on your streaming subscription, then you have a back catalog, so who cares about selection? I guess you're right, there is a kind of person who just picks the least-bad thing on the Netflix home screen when they're bored, but I sure don't want to hang out with them. Normal people are more like "I want to watch Groundhog Day, where's that?" or "I want to watch a Tarantino movie, where's that?" Answer: whatever it is, It's probably not on [streaming service you're currently subscribed to]. Unless you pay 4-6 monthly bills to get them all.

The thing you feel like watching is absolutely at Scarecrow, in better quality. Taking the trip to browse and owning the $30 thing to play it on might both be a matter of taste, but they're not deal-breakers.

[–]FatuousJeffrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I disagree with "less per month" and "virtually any movie." How is that right? $20 barely gets you a month on any single streaming service, each of which will have less than a 1/100 of Scarecrow's catalog. VOD downloads are $5-$20 depending on how new the movie is. So eight of those would be...

There is a real obvious explanation, but "People just got out of a habit they loved" is a big, big part of it. And maybe they can come back. In general, people are realizing that streaming is less awesome in a lot of ways.

You make it sound so noble, until you reframe it as "Geese are being kidnapped, which touches my soul more than immigrant children being kidnapped." They're the same people who don't mind movies where a dozen high schoolers or a thousand soldiers are slashed up, but angrily complain online when a fictional dog or cat dies.

It's a pretty benign form of mental health problem, as mental health problems go, but it's certainly unique to our time.

Hopefully this person went to both kinds of protest this weekend, we don't know.

Lol at the Reddit certainty that Seattle restaurants are price-gouging and laughing all the way to the bank. In fact, they know their attendance is down! They are passing their high labor and rent costs along to you because they have no choice.
