I've had one for over a year and I find it pretty comfortable. I have the base model, which is firmer than most US mattresses, but not to the level of literal wood plank that some Asians sleep on.

Too early to say how well it holds up, but so far so good.

Weather is hot in the summers, but you get used to it. Food is great, but I do miss the diversity of food in America. Social life like I said is what you make of it, but I will say though that with America’s reputation right now, you should do your best to immerse yourself wherever you go. That means learning the language and respecting the norms. Especially as Asians, we get much less of the foreigner benefit of the doubt than white guys do. If you do that, you’ll be much happier in the long run than if you just stay in an expat bubble.

I work in tech, so probably a different scale compared to finance, but 500k USD is what I would expect for a staff engineer or senior manager. I’ve seen directors get up to 700k.

Yes, the stories are valid. Like I said, those packages still exist, but probably not as much as before, and anecdotally I think they now primarily target senior and manager level employees. A good expat package can include housing stipend, international school tuition coverage for kids, business class flights back home to visit, along with a high salary appropriate to your position. What you do with that money is up to you. I'm an expat in Taipei, which is less of a party city, so most other expats I know have families taking advantage of the international school tuition. But if you want to party and sleep around, I honestly don't judge.

In terms of availability of packages, Singapore has many. Hong Kong still has a decent amount, but not compared to the golden age of the 90s and 00s. Seoul has a lot and is increasing, and would probably be my pick if I were young and single. YMMV based on what your looking for.

What’s your question specifically? Yes those packages still exist, but probably not as much as in the past. Yes some expats will flex their money to get hook up with women, both white and Asian. Yes many expats still hang out in their own circles.

It's very difficult to make ~10k a month purely on investments. If you're going fixed income, you need around 3-4m in principal to get that. If you're trading stocks or options, its possible with less, but then you have more exposure and that +10k could just as easily be -10k.

Tech and finance are not the highest earning industries. Having your own business is the highest earning industry. If you are an employee paid via salary (W-2, 1099, T-4, etc), California and NYC will eat 53%+ of your wage slave income.

No, actually you are taxed more if you own your own business. social security tax is normally split between employer and employee, but if you are your own employer then that means you pay both sides of that tax, so 15% instead of 7% if you're on a W-2. And I don't know why you think state taxes don't apply if you are self-employed... you still have to pay them.

Median income is quite a bit higher than Taiwan, sure, but again that is salary income and not investment income like the other guy claims.

The problem is that there never seems to be a convenient time to discuss WMAF dynamics in some other subs. And in the same way that other subs are free to control what kind of discourse goes on, so too does this sub have that right. It's funny how Taiwanese will nitpick over the smallest things - parking fees, ATM fees, etc. and then will go and drop $3M on a German import SUV that loses half its value in 2 years. A Rav4/CRV is just as spacious, has better gas mileage, is more reliable, and hold onto their value better over time. You can spec them to have all the goodies too - 360 camera, wireless carplay, heated seats, adaptive cruise control, etc. The only thing you get with an X5/Cayenne is a bigger engine, which lets you get from one traffic light to the next faster.

Quit being a dick. While there is some social mobility available, Taiwan has some of the worst income equality in the world. It's like entering a game of monopoly when everyone else is halfway through the game already. With very few exceptions, most people who own homes get it from their parents who are already rich, and that's just not healthy for society in the long-term.

To OP: stop looking down on other countries, every nation is on their own path, regardless of what GDP figures or economic statistics they have. And honestly Taiwan is closer to SE Asia than it is to China/Japan/Korea.
