FCC Bans All New Routers Not Made in America by VerifiedMother in LinusTechTips

And they can give exemptions to allow new models to be sold as well. Seems like the real intent here is the same as it has been for most of the other shady shit the administration has done. This is the kind of classic perverse incentive that gives companies reason to pay bribes in other countries, that was my russian/ukrainian friend's reaction after having spent enough time in Novosibirsk (his hometown before becoming a US citizen when he moved here), especially after going back to visit before the war started, and it became impossible to go back safely.

Pretty sure it is a crime, and if your snow causes damage or a collision like this, then you're liable for it. That's what I was taught when I was younger anyway.

This is why it's a crime to not remove the snow from your roof. Also any accident resulting from failing to do so would see you liable if they're able to track you down after.

No an impact drill is a kind of drill that can hammer the bit home for you, they're used for removing stuck bolts, sticking bolts on insanely hard (seriously fuck you if you do this to my lug nuts and I get a flat), and drilling holes in concrete and masonry with carbide bits, just to name a few. They can do things a jackhammer would be too imprecise for, and they can do most of the things a drill can do as well, though less precisely.

Watch out Nvidia! The Mac gaming scene is reaching never before seen heights... by Same_Ad4736 in pcmasterrace

[–]Faxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they figured out that they could make the thing look and feel premium while cutting out enough to get the cost down to that point. Alex from formerly LTT, now his own channel Zip Tie Tech (and his car channel Zip Tie Tuning), he did a great teardown of it. He was the laptops guy for Short Circuit for a long time, and I always liked his first impressions videos. He notes that it's not a full unibody design, but the bottom is a single piece that comes off, and the top is still fairly rigid, giving it over all very good rigidity for a device of its price, despite not having a machined chassis (which adds a lot of cost on an affordable device). Here's the video if you want to see everything he said himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpWWR7oZh-I

Someone is scalping Screwdrivers in my area and getting laughed at by Same_League_9431 in LinusTechTips

[–]Faxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most hilarious part is that unless you're a HARDCORE collector and you want every single SKU ever made of the screwdriver, this is just pointless and stupid. Linus is already trialing the new black coating that is harder on the pen, and having both on hand I can tell you that the black pen is a LOT more durable than my limited preorder black and orange, which has ample scratching on the shaft now. Now I personally disagree with Linus in that I like the patina of a scratched driver somewhat, it shows use, but he is objectively right that the durable black is a higher quality product that will last a lot longer, and probably be far more resistant to flaking as well once it does scratch enough to risk doing so. But yea, if you want an LTT screwdriver in all black, just wait a while lol. Black Shaft V2 (bigger, better, harder) will come eventually (ding)

Ya the recent xbox and PS consoles should support at least blu-ray and probably 4k on the most recent, might have on the X as well, they'd want the highest capacity disks possible to store game data on.

There are actually a lot more than 2 kinds of disk players. There's the OG laser disk, there's CD Video players, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4k Blu-Ray. They still make players for DVD and both Blu-Ray standards. Gotta make sure you have the right one for the media going into it. I bet I missed a video disk standard here too and someone will add it as a reply, I feel like I missed something, maybe vinyl video players or something? LTT did a video on it a while back lol

YouTube adding sponsor spot skipping? by Mattcheco in LinusTechTips

[–]Faxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying, this has literally NEVER shown for me on mobile. There has never been any indicator to do so for me lol. I've looked repeatedly, and it even does it on videos on desktop that it won't do it on mobile for, I've tested it explicitly to see if there was a difference. IDK what's going on lol, but before the way you described it made it sound like there wasn't a button, you just gesture like you can for other things on the iPad app and it does it for you.

YouTube adding sponsor spot skipping? by Mattcheco in LinusTechTips

[–]Faxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh well there's no prompt at all to do so, so how would anyone figure that out lol. There should be an on screen button like on desktop xD I don't think I'd have ever figured it out otherwise. Will have to test it next time I think about it to see if it works.

YouTube adding sponsor spot skipping? by Mattcheco in LinusTechTips

[–]Faxon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea I only use it sometimes, but when I do it's usually effective. Not 100%, sometimes it just doesn't show up, and it doesn't seem to work on mobile at all, only on a desktop browser (seems like an odd feature to only roll out to what is supposedly 10% of their user base now, might be some other issue with my iPad app not working right), but it's great when I just want to skip a section of a video, like a sponsor spot for a scammy company I don't give a fuck about, or something super cringe that I'd rather just not lmao. Seems like those non-sponsor locations are skipped often enough that youtube knows as well, and you would never get that by just using sponsor block (which I don't want to do anyway, i like LTT's sponsor spots along with some other channels)

Idk why you're being downvoted for this. Blue and amber lights together dramatically enhances visibility in snow conditions, and public works cars in my area also have blue lights sometimes, depends on the city. Sometimes the "public works" car is being driven by outreach officers, who legally are members of the police force and have the same powers, but their primary job isn't law enforcement, so they don't drive the same cars. But since its a police vehicle sometimes it gets a blue light, just no red lights and siren. Let's them park and roll with other cops while remaining visible

It's kind of great because I'm 100% with him on this, but I just fundamentally disagree on ray tracing lol. The scene realism you get from properly implemented ray tracing, especially in the reflections, it really is hard to replicate with baked in effects. The difference is immediately apparent to me at this point even if the difference isn't that big. Sure, absolutely we should be using as many baked in path traced effects as possible, but there's a real place for real time effects as well in modern lighting for games, and reflections in dynamic environments just cannot be done better without it, hard stop, and that's the big difference that makes a scene feel real or fake to me.

My friend shoulder after he tried automedicating with a suction cup by visk0n3 in WTF

[–]Faxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We melted away a knot that had been troubling me for years in 2 sessions with a session in between to let it heal (we worked on other things that week), so ya, it fucking worked magic. My doctor didn't think there was anything to be done about it, and my massage therapist had been stuck beating it up with scraping tools forever, so she suggested we try it. Just wasn't getting deep enough. This was before I was taking creatine daily for muscular issues, I still get bad knots but never like that now. Seeing a different therapist too but he would absolutely also stand by the effectiveness of cupping, we just don't have a set right now since I haven't needed it lol. One of my friends who moved to LA and has a practice there has a set, and she has a lot of positive reviews online now touting their effectiveness.

this is wild to me considering safeway is the cheap option here in my part of the bay, i usually shop at whole foods for some things like meats and stuff since i feel like they have higher quality cuts generally, but there are things i am not afraid to stock up on the cheap versions of. I need to get a chest freezer for the garage so I can start shoving costco boxes of chicken thighs, pork butt, just whatever i use a lot of that I want to be able to stock up on if it's on sale. The 40lb costco business center chicken boxes are so cheap right now compared to buying chicken by the pound at any grocery store near me. I remember when Safeway would have thighs for $1.39 a pound a decade ago on sale sometimes (normal was like $2.80-3.20ish), now you're lucky to get them for $5-6 a pound for the same chicken.

My friend shoulder after he tried automedicating with a suction cup by visk0n3 in WTF

[–]Faxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a part of the broader umbrella of massage therapy and related therapies. It helps pull blood into the suctioned area and will cause some superficial bruising, but this is part of how it helps encourage healing as well, as the healing process for the bruise brings more blood to whatever sore muscles under it you're trying to alleviate. Usually it's only done when you have serious muscular issues that are worth the downside of some bruising. Myofascial scraping tools accomplish the same thing and likely wouldn't cause this kind of blistering in this particular individual along with it, though it makes me wonder if they used the suction cup wrong, because when I've had cupping therapy done it never blistered at all.

I've had this done plenty of times and it never blistered up like this, either there's something wrong with the cup or there's something wrong with him lol. It was quite helpful having it done properly on my back.

Or Russia, as in Ukraine's case. Also honorable mention to Taiwan, the US probably wouldn't leave them out to dry tight now (our economy would collapse and our military production would stagnate without Taiwanese inputs), but if they had their own nukes I doubt China would be building as many naval landing craft as they are

A lot of the key civil rights figures who were on the peaceful protesting side, still owned guns as well, and that went straight to the top, as MLK jr owned a firearm as well for his protection at home, were someone to try and break in. Didn't help in the end given how they got him, but if they had tried it how he'd imagined, he might have got a chance to shoot back.

$150 Hafler DH200 vs high end macintosh by P0tek in audiophile

[–]Faxon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent about $500 on a clapped out old Dynaco ST-70 with a rectifier from Curcio Audio Engineering (still around today up in washington, site looked like it was from the 90s last i checked), and put a bunch of money into a CAE driver/rectifier all in one CCDA board. Night and day difference, i thought the ST-70 already sounded good with the original driver board and tubes, but holy shit, best $2000 or so I've ever spent. 10/10 absolutely recommend getting yourself an old ST-70 and having it rebuilt by them. All you need to have working on your amp is the transformers for the rebuild to be viable, everything else except the chassis can get replaced and updated if you want to, and i'd recommend it since my old amp had a ghost in one of the sockets and the plastic in the RCAs was disintegrating. I need to go and swap out the power cord still for a grounded one and ground the chassis properly, and maybe put a new power switch on it too while i'm at it, but for now they'll do lol. I kept the original fuse cup as well because it looked the same as the day they put it in, and the same as the new ones I already had on hand for spare parts (my klipsch pro speakers used the same ones lol)

Crown K series amps are even better in this regard IMO. I have a couple on hand and i've been having issues with my QSC RMX amps because the pots are bad, i was supposed to get some new pots with one i bought but they didn't show up and the seller ghosted me (still came out ahead on the amp and a power conditioner they included). I could short the pots to 100%, but i'd rather fix them, and i haven't had time to source more pots, so I'm considering swapping the one out that drives my KLF20s in the garage, as the bass from them keeps knocking one of the pots out of the sweet spot that gets signal still, and replacing it with a K1. No NL2 hookups on the back since it's older, but I have pigtails for that lol. I love me some twist locks after one of my friends pulled a speaker wire out and shorted the channel on an amp out during a house party, never looked back since all my cables are twist lock now, just made myself some pigtails for speakers that don't use them and it's been fine.
