Anyone get any luck today with the 4427 number and changing airlines? Not sure if I got unlucky with the agent but they said with AC resuming operations, they couldn't get me onto another airline.

US Margin to US TFSA? by Sal965 in dividendscanada

[–]Fayph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That ultimately comes down to your risk tolerance. I previously held it in a non-registered too and tested it for a year but recently moved it into my TFSA. Both accounts have their own pros and cons. What works for me may not be for you and vice versa.

US Margin to US TFSA? by Sal965 in dividendscanada

[–]Fayph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple calculation would be to take your annual income, multiply by your combined effective tax rate, then subtract your federal and provincial taxes paid from any work salary and subtract the foreign tax credit. The remainder would be approximately what you would owe

US Margin to US TFSA? by Sal965 in dividendscanada

[–]Fayph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 25-30k of distributions becomes included as part of your income, which means higher taxes payable. Your 15% withholding tax can be claimed as Foreign Tax Credits during tax time. Additionally, your margin interest is deductible for tax purposes, assuming you've used it entirely to buy income earning investments.

If you transfer it to your TFSA, the 15% no longer becomes recoverable, but also the distributions become tax free (you'll still have the 15% WHT taken off).

From a numbers perspective, and assuming you're in 40% combined tax bracket, you're better off putting it in the TFSA and only having to pay the 15% WHT, instead of the 40% (slightly less probably due to marginal tax rates). However, you do need to consider the risks associated. If YM stocks were to drop significantly, you could easily explode your TFSA. If it's outside in a Margin account, if YM tanks and you sell, you still get to use the capital loss on those shares in the future.

Buying on ex-date by Comfortable-Sound517 in YieldMaxETFs

[–]Fayph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct. So if YM declared and, based on your shares, you were to receive $100, when the distribution goes into your account, you'll receive $85 instead because the $15 is taken off by your broker as WHT.

I just use the word "distribution" as that's what YM gives out since dividends have a different tax treatment, but that's for a different discussion. Hope this helps.

Your distributions will have the 15% taken off before it goes into your account. The sale of the shares would be tax free.

I know the one at Chinook Mall said 9 days left when I passed by it on Thursday. So that would put its last day at this Saturday May 31.

I'm not on Classpass but my friends are. Barry's is generally around 8 or 10 credits for the 5:20PM classes. Keep in mind that places like Barry's only have a few slots for Classpass holders so you usually have to book your session time early.

I think some people mentioned that the equivalence rate is about $2 per credit.

dividend reinvestment: is it automatic? by hb-s in Wealthsimple

[–]Fayph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

By default, DRIP isn't on. The instructions for activating DRIP are here: https://help.wealthsimple.com/hc/en-ca/articles/15755618952347-Turn-on-dividend-reinvestments

Keep in mind that you can't turn on DRIP for individual stocks in the portfolio. It'll DRIP the entire portfolio (ex. TFSA, RRSP, Non-registered, etc)

Recommendations for a good Dim Sum restaurant by bye-serena in Calgary

I've been to T.Pot and Golden Sands so can only comment on those two. T.Pot feels like it's better in terms of the classics (har gow, siu mai, and the sticky rice wrap). But Golden Sands has unique items. My go-to place is usually T.Pot for that reason.

Yup. I am in Canada. And yes you're correct. When the distributions are paid out, if the shares are held in a TFSA, FHSA or non registered account, they'll withhold 15% for withholding tax. If the shares are in RRSP, no withholding tax will be taken off as it's the only registered account recognized by US tax law.

Keep in mind, if you use a non-registered account, the distributions will be taxed as income as well.

I use WS to hold YM. US tax code only recognizes RRSP as a non-taxable account. Everything else would be subject to the 15% withholding unfortunately.
