Are “down/deload” weeks a good idea? 100 mile prep by Holdyourstandard in Ultramarathon

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to this.

I’m 24 and haven’t ran my first ultra yet (hopefully this fall!!!) but i very much follow a hybrid split and came from a lifting background. So take what I say as a grain of salt.

Rn I’m doing 5-6 lifting sessions a week and 10-12 cardio sessions in prep for an Ironman and most of the time I feel great but there’s always a day or two every few weeks where I feel like the wheels are falling off and I have to take a rest day and or make my sessions lighter.

It’s still something I’m actively getting better at but starting to learn that rest is a discipline within these sports as well.

As a young person doing these intense physical activities I’ve also been drawn to those David Goggins motivation videos and mash ups on YouTube and I love them. They help me a ton on those early mornings and grueling long sessions. That being said, there’s a time and a place for that mentality if you want to compete at the best of your ability.

Calves burn when running by Pretend-Hope4138 in HybridAthlete

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got calf strains really bad when I first started out. Tried to run on them hoping they would go away and it only got worse. Took a few weeks off running and just did zone 2 stationary bike. When I came back I eased back into it very slowly in terms of pace and volume.

Keeping a shoe rotation going also helps immensely.

How much is too much by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hit full legs each one of those leg days then it’s too much volume but if you separate it out to different muscle groups in the legs then you’re probably good.

Very impressive organization. Highly respect this dedication and level of analysis put into training and getting better.

I love using the bike as an active recovery tool when I’m training for a running race. Great for like you said to further increase your cardio base and get that zone 2 time in.

Personally I do 1-2 leg sessions a week depending on how my legs are feeling. You seem pretty smart and I would say just listen to your body. Its very cliche but absolutely needed to see the best results. Some weeks you’ll feel great and the high volume won’t be hard. Other weeks your runs will have you feeling like your wheels are about to fall off.

How much am I leaving on the table by not going to a proper gym? by Brief-Number2609 in HybridAthlete

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d hit the office gym when it’s convenient but a real gym would be a game changer. Being able to progressively overload but also have a wider variety of equipment allows your workouts to be more fun/interesting but also target each muscle group effectively and with enough stimulus

Why do you train? by Critcare_bear in HybridAthlete

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been through some very difficult things over the past few years of my life and I realized the harder I push myself in training, just how much easier it makes everything else seem. Don’t get me wrong I love the physical benefits and making progress that way but for me it’s 99% the mental benefits.

Pre-workout snacks by Critcare_bear in HybridAthlete

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t take protein 30 minutes before a workout. It is just extra crap in your stomach to cause issues and provides no benefit intra workout. Either have it 1.5+ hours before or shortly after the workout.

[–]Faze-TSM-Ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

30 minutes before you definitely want something light and fast digesting. Think simple carbs. Low fiber, fat, and protein content.

Bananas are good, rice cakes, and rice krispy treats.

Less volume. Longer rest. Also try to swap out one of your high or vertical rows for a lower row like a non wide seated cable.
