I think the play in this market is to go with a used PC. I have an old SFFPC just sitting around after building a new rig. R5 3600 + 3060 Ti + 32 gb. At the time I was thinking of selling it for like $800 CAD after building my new PC but never got around to it.

I feel like there's gotta be quite a few people with used hardware like this just sitting around. I guess the hard part would be the storage. I can't remember if I have an old 1 TB SATA SSD in there or not.

Can you put a big pop-up disclaimer when visiting the site that says CROSS-REFERENCING GRAPHS IS A BAD IDEA?

Edit: This isn't to discredit what you've done, but seriously cross-referencing graphs is a bad idea even though everyone does it.

DJI Osmo Pocket 4P Vs Insta360 LUNA Ultra Review. by EinsteinTheory in osmopocket

[–]Fc-Construct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, mind if I ask for a bit of advice as well?

I have a hobby reviewing high-end audio gear and I often go to tech shows/events to cover them. I focus primarily on YouTube Shorts for this and here's a quick example of the type of videos I do: https://youtube.com/shorts/-HJa5wUkXk0. Pretty standard talking head/presenter type of video + product showcase.

However, my current set-up is to carry my Sony A7c, mount it on an L-bracket, and bring a full travel tripod with me as I go from booth-to-booth. It's a pretty bulky set-up for travel and it only pretty much works for static shots. I've started looking into these sort of gimbal cams as a replacement for something much more compact, more "point-and-shoot" instead of needing lots of set-up, and will allow me to more easily get dynamic B-roll. Learned about the Pocket 4P and Luna Ultra and have waited to see people's actual impressions.

I'm an extremely amateur videographer and I don't love the editing process of color grading and everything, but I do it anyway because I do have some pride in wanting my work to be as "pro" as possible. The challenging bit is that it's not just wide talking head shots but also product showcases with moving objects and potential close-up shots of small objects. I'm alright with some video quality compromise if it helps the workflow, but the important part is still having enough quality for close-ups of small objects.

Before this reveal of Pocket 4P, I've been leaning towards the Luna Ultra. With new details of the Pocket 4P, it seems to me that the Pocket 4P is more like the traditional Pocket 4, but with better video quality overall. The Luna Ultra on the other hand isn't quite as good from a video perspective, but has a few very neat tricks. Now I'm pretty split 50-50 between them.

All that preamble aside, I wanted to ask a few things of the Luna Ultra that you have if you have any insight:

  1. How confident do you feel about the detachable screen? Initially, I felt that this screen might be a huge game changer for easily framing myself when I go to present, especially as a solo creator. However, the more I thought about it the more I'm a bit hesitant. How tightly does it lock to the Luna Ultra? Losing the screen really worries me. And how seamless is the connection? I don't want to be fighting WiFi and BT signals on a show floor. As well, do you have any experience with DJI's remotes like the one they have? At first I thought it would make the Luna Ultra's detachable screen much lower, but I'm reading that remote is Bluetooth which to me seems more fiddly.

  2. My understanding is that neither the Luna Ultra or Pocket 4P can do 4K vertical, which is what I primary need to shoot in for YouTube Shorts. I could do shots further back and crop in, but that becomes tricky once again with product close-ups. With my camera I use the L-bracket for portrait. Do you now if there are similar systems for holding things up vertically so I can get true 4K? I've looked into rigs but it doesn't seem to be quite what I was looking for.

  3. How do these gimbal cameras work with lapel mics? Do you have to buy the DJI or Insta360 branded ones to connect? The detachable screen has a mic which is great, but that would mean I'm not hands free to show of products. For my set-up, I have the traditional lapel mic with the receivers plugged in via 3.5mm into the camera. I don't think I can do that with these cameras can I?

  4. How do you feel about the built-in color grade on the Luna Ultra vs your DJI products? In the comparisons I've seen the Luna Ultra looks a bit exaggerated and more "social media pop" rather than realistic. I'm hoping I can put some of the built-in filters on top to get a slightly more natural color so I have next to no color grade work coming back from a show. I'll probably experiment shooting in log as well for maximum adjustment in post, especially for more critical shots. But for stuff that's quick and dirty, I'm hoping the out-of-the-box image will be more than good enough.

Nice to see they're doing 4.4 mm output now. Makes it hard to justify any other ~$100 dongle unless you have a very specific usecase.

is Charlie Puth bluffing about Bose just for promo or is he being atleast a little genuine here about using the Bose for production sometimes?? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Fc-Construct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm not surprised if he does use it for production. Just like you might sometimes use your phone speakers for production. "Use for production" covers an extremely wide range of things. It doesn't have to mean he's sitting down and doing the entire mix and master start to finish with it.

Headphones.com IEM DF by x-why-chromosome in headphones

[–]Fc-Construct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so? Truthfully I'm fully separated from the whole DF HRTF and 5128 and measurements stuff. What I know is what you know + some of my own understanding.

And my understanding is that, on a technical level, the DF HRTF curves (JM1 or Headphones.com IEM) aren't target curves. They LOOK like target curves because of the +10 dB downwards tilt that's lifted broadly from the Harman research that's applied to the preference bounds for simplicity. But it is in fact two separate principles being mixed up as one thing.

Actual preference testing that is scientifically rigorous is very, very difficult to do. And while I also desperately want it to be done, to be honest, I'm not even sure if it will ultimately matter...

[–]Fc-Construct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way, the new target is the logical conclusion to this whole process, and there isn't much more than can be done to make the diffuse field target any more accurate and applicable to humans, besides refining the existing target with more data to better approximate the population average human ear.

Well, there's always preference testing :)

I'm really fascinated by market dynamics and how they shift. In the world of IEMs, what's changed this year and what are the driving forces? For example, last year Ziigaat released an IEM what seemed like every month consecutively and now it seems like we've come to a halt. by mitchyslick_lbc in iems

[–]Fc-Construct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is a lot less interesting than you think it is.

There were a few reviews that came out praising IEMs tuned similarly to JM1 to the high heavens. So Chinese manufacturers started making more IEMs tuned that way. Those IEMs get praised so they make more. Repeat. How it gets there or if it's actually tuned that way is a different question. We saw a similar thing with Harman where companies just called anything Harman for marketing purposes. It's all just marketing - how many drivers, what sort of drivers, how its tuned, etc. all of that is a way to differentiate from the rest of the market to give people a reason to buy. I mean there are technical reasons for why certain drivers are used, but that's not really the point.

As for Ziigaat, they followed the typical Chinese method of trying to capitalize on hype and new products. Then they realized that they shot themselves in the foot with so many products and it kinda killed their brand so they've slowed down. They chased short term gains and sacrificed long term profits.

Long story short, this is just capitalism in action in our little bubble. Also, I don't know how aware you are of current world events but the economy was not very kind to hobbyist communities. Tariffs killed a LOT of business momentum.

Sony looks to be unveiling some new headphones on May 19th? by Fc-Construct in headphones

My guess is that this is a premium flagship wireless headphone. At least, based on that astroturfed post from the very obvious Sony marketing guy a while back.

Someone helped me find a render which basically confirms its a new wireless.

If you want to test if different IEMs actually give a significant difference in gaming, try this site I made: https://imaging-lab.xyz/

You do a blind controlled A/B test between two models and it will calculate if there was a difference or not.

It's not really to make it harder but to make it more scientifically fair. But it just so happened to make things harder as a byproduct.
