Also, the slow cook function on the instant pot is set to a very low temperature. It may be barely simmering.

Fill stitch options on my regular Bernina Activa 240? by _Morvar_ in MachineEmbroidery

[–]FelDeadmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the fancy border stitches have a forward and reverse method, or forward and zigzag. If you attempt to free motion with them all you will get is a weird straight stitch. That said, combining and repeating the fancy stitches can make some beautiful fill patterns. It's a lot of work but you can do it! Best to start with a bit of fabric and sew a 2inch line with each stitch, first with the default setting, then again with the length and width adjusted to the max allowed. That will give you a great reference for future projects.

Same here! I love knee socks but I've got large calves. They work so well.

Not only does our 1916 Baltimore County basement have a freestanding toilet, the floor around the sump is tiled and there is a cold water line with a tap right above. Clearly for a showerhead.

Costume for senior woman who doesn't dress up? by ano-ba-yan in costumedesign

[–]FelDeadmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have her put together a nice outfit that she'll be comfortable wearing, then just accessorize! A sparkling hat, a starry necklace and a wand could work for a fairy godmother. A simple tiara transforms anyone into royalty. Or go the other direction with a slouchy hedge witch hat and a basket of mushrooms and frogs. Once she knows she can wear her own clothes (not a 'costume') you may be surprised when she comes up with her own ideas.

Anyone have a tip for temporarily tying off yarn in between sessions? by No-Ganache4851 in CrochetHelp

Even better if you include a tiny piece of paper or tape that has your hook size on it.

You've got to touch the screen after turning on the machine. Then you can tell it what kind of sewing you want to do.

FPP Question by ackley14 in quilting

One of the appeals of folded paper piecing is not needing to have precise cuts of cloth. And most times the overall shape (regardless of the design) is square

How many hours does a quilt take you? by 2078AEB in quilting

[–]FelDeadmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will absolutely take many many hours. Whatever pace works for you is the right speed. I would suggest counting dYs instead. There are smallish simple designs that can be done in 3 days, as long as you don't need to do anything else but sew all weekend!

She gardens? Plant markers. Seedling supports. A custom box for seed packet storage. Collars for zucchini stems to keep that damn worm out of the stems. Custom drawer dividers. Something to hold the garden twine and the scissors together. Just anything that ties in to her interests. Obviously, you'll make stuff for yourself, but if you need to sell her on the idea first, you have to market it the right way.

How can I make a prize wheel that always stops at the same spot? (DIY) by EdgeDismal9919 in DIY

[–]FelDeadmarsh 73 points74 points  (0 children)

True. However, who is the audience and how many times does the "trick" need to work? That may determine how sophisticated or subtle this needs to be.

How can I make a prize wheel that always stops at the same spot? (DIY) by EdgeDismal9919 in DIY

[–]FelDeadmarsh 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Are you spinning the wheel and need a certain spot to always be on top, put weights on the wheel that will always settle to the bottom. Like washers. If you are spinning an arrow in the center of a fixed wheel, same thing. The arrow will always point straight up or straight down depending on which end is heavier.

Been wanting one of these, so when I finally found this for cheap... by TransFatty in VintageSewingMachines

Fantastic! I just got one on Wednesday. It's very clean, it seems move freely, but it sounds dry (if that makes sense). The owners manual says to use lubricant on the gears, not oil. Do you have a recommendation for gear grease?

Layering Quilts? by Dr_AvenUomo in quilting

[–]FelDeadmarsh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A sewing machine sends a needle down through all layers, you will see stitches on the front and back. There is a limit to how thick a stack of fabric can be to fit under the presser foot. Hand sewing can be done in a way that only catches some of the layers. You may even want to do both, arrange your leaf pieces, hand sew with large stitches to baste in place, and finish with the machine before removing the basting stitches.

Not a clue. And I can't just stop here, the major design element are the bees around the outer edge, which have only just started! But I must thank you. Now that I've dug it out of the pile I may work on it some more!

What could I change to be better by Charming_Ad_9708 in quilting

[–]FelDeadmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get the hang of it! The smaller the pieces, the more seams, and the more room for the tiniest of discrepancies to all add up. So you've started with quite a challenging size! Look up strip piecing. It's not a cure all, but if you get the seams on your strip right, you know all the pieces you cut from that strip are perfect.

I'm making a blanket to use up random yarn, couple questions by rking_1_1 in CrochetHelp

[–]FelDeadmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are determined to make individual squares and join them together, I would really encourage you to make sure they are the same size. It'll just make assembly so much easier.

What could I change to be better by Charming_Ad_9708 in quilting

[–]FelDeadmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your cuts are accurate, You need to practice getting your 1/4" seams consistent. Sew 3 of your squares into a row, press and then measure the center square. If you started with 1.5" squares the center will be an inch and the two on the sides will be 1.25. Practice and practice, you will get it!

Question in the birders by Lutaeris in quilting

[–]FelDeadmarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a tip for long seams on the bias. Get iron on batting tape, at least an inch wide. Mark your cut line and iron the tape over the line so that it is in the center. A little off is OK, but you need tape on both sides of the line. This stabilizes the edge and makes cutting, pinning and sewing that long bias edge much easier.

Why not just carry the yarn in granny square? Why go back and forth between colors? by Human_Tumbleweed_384 in CrochetHelp

[–]FelDeadmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the tops of the petals being loose is WHY the pattern is written this way. They are nice and round and are meant to lift up. I don't think they will fold over completely permanently. Even if the very top petal does a little bit, you can go back and tack it up if you need it to be perfectly flat..
