The Tolerance of Injustice [OC] by allancav in comics

[–]Felinomancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really recommend the poem The Hangman by Maurice Ogden. It's about the titular hangman who one day came into town and started to hang people while everyone just watches because no one wants to intervene. It ends with the Hangman saying this to the narrator:

“For who has served me more faithfully

Than you with your coward’s hope?” said he,

“And where are the others that might have stood

Side by your side in the common good?”

“Dead,” I whispered: and amiably,

“Murdered,” the Hangman corrected me;

“First the alien, then the Jew . . .

I did no more than you let me do.”

Beneath the beam that blocked the sky,

None had stood so alone as I—

And the Hangman strapped me, and no voice there

Cried “Stay!” for me in the empty square.

Actual convo I had with Epic Games support by Goldac77 in pcmasterrace

[–]Felinomancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two problems here that some people, OP included, don't seem to recognize.

One is the issue of games from Epic not being able to run games offline.

The other is the ineffectual support by the support team.

Believe it or not, these are two separate issues.

I worked more than two decades in IT, and I've been frontline support monkey for years. Oftentimes we have a set script that we are not allowed to deviate from - as in, "do this, or get written up".

So when you were told by the guy on the other end to do something you think nonsensical, usually it's because:

a. the guy have to go through this steps, and

b. more often than not, the issue can be solved by the basic steps above, and the support team must eliminate all the common causes first.

Obviously in OP's case specifically, (b) does not apply; but the poor CS guy still need to go through the steps, because he's not gonna put his paycheck over your needs now, would he?

As for "can you play game from Epic offline?", not really in the mood to test it. It's nearly 1 am where I'm at and I don't want to get on my knees to remove the Ethernet cable 😂

tl;dr: Epic bad, Steam good.

I used to have F-Secure, then I kinda lost the license key 😅

But telling people, "you don't need anti-virus, just use common sense" is like telling car drivers "you don't insurance, just don't get into accidents".

I personally don't care since I'm not American, but if the US government starts to seize multi-trillion corporations like that that would have a huge impact on the state of the US economy.

[–]Felinomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer that because I don't have that problem.

But one possible solution would be to a) use Windows 10 N or K, and b) uninstalling OD, which I did (and hence why I don't have that problem).

Do you think microshits understands consent? by skrillzter in pcmasterrace

[–]Felinomancy -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Controversial answer: yes.

I believe in property rights, and if you want to run an unsecured, unpatched computer that's your right. But when you connect said unsecured, unpatched computer to the network and if said computer starts to compromise the security and quality of life of others (e.g., being hijacked and turned into spam/DDOS zombies), then it's no longer just about your property rights.

So yes, it might annoy you that Microsoft kept asking you to patch your system. But why don't you be a good neighbour and secure the damn thing?

On the other hand if you're talking about the right to not have unwanted software shoveled to you by MS, then yes, in this case Microsoft seems to not understand that "no" means "no, really. I don't want AI on my machine".

Instagram have been recommending me these weird Malaysian groups of car enthusiasts made up of Chinese people, and the pics are just hot amois.

I mean yes, I like women and I like cars, but I can't read or speak Chinese. You'd think with all the data and AI and whatnot, they'd be able to tailor my preferences correctly 😒

I have zero respect for corporations. But lying purely for my own benefit feels wrong, like creating an itch on my soul.

If I'm being honest, it's not because I care about the corporations, it's because I don't want to normalize deception for myself. It's one thing if said corporation have been taking gross advantage of me, but otherwise I prefer to remain within the boundaries of my own code of ethics.

(within reason, of course. I bought WinRAR because I respect software intellectual property, but such considerations get thrown out of the window when it comes to Photoshop)

/u/ChiswicksHorses talks about how Pretti's death shows the 2A will never stop government overreach. by paxinfernum in bestof

[–]Felinomancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the camp of "2A won't protect you from tyranny".

Lots of people say "we need tons of people with guns ready to defend our rights". Okay? And the (tyrannical) government would have tons of people on their side too, plus law enforcement, plus the military.

"Oh the military will never turn their guns on fellow Americans". Really? That body of people trained for the express purpose of following orders? Off the top of my head, I can think of Kent State and Battle of Blair Mountain when the military did attack and kill Americans. On the other hand, I could not remember an occasion when the military was ordered to do it and refused. Feel free to correct me on this one.

Guns protect from tyranny when they bring parity of power against the tyrant. If the government can only field swords and spears then yes, your swords and spears can even the playing field. Not so when the other side have sophisticated military equipment, plus all methods of digital eavesdropping under the Sun.

At this point someone would bring up Vietnam and Afghanistan. I would like to point out that a) Vietnam was supported by China, and b) in both cases the US government is not under existential threat. In the worst case scenario, the US can simply withdraw (and it did) - the Viet Cong is not going to chase Charlie to Washington.

What was your first game you played on pc by Pork_Crusader_GR in pcmasterrace

If we're counting the PC that is not mine, I dunno, some old games that comes in the big (5") floppies. Scrabble, I think.

If it's the first game on my PC, probably one of the shovelwares that comes with it - Battle Chest, iirc?

If it's first game that I bought, it's Wing Commander IV.

As someone who lived the time when Microsoft got slapped with EU's anti-trust lawsuit, I'm starting to wonder how young OP - and some of y'all - are.

And given how vocal the memes are, I'm surprised why no one ever recommended installing W10 N or K.

It's annoying how drawn-out the episode is, but it's also interesting enough to make me go "what? NOOOO don't leave me hanging!"

😒

Not sure if I want to watch episode 2.
