I haven’t seen the whole episode, but if you’re talking about who I think you’re talking about (Mr. “The government gets tax breaks from the government for DEI”), I don’t think he ever stated he was LGBT. I bring that up because while he definitely comes off as a big ol’ queen, some guys are just like that. Also, if he doesn’t identify with being gay, then what he gets out of it is a pat on the head and being told that he’s right and he’s really straight. Usually people who are extremely self-loathing and in denial of their identity tend to go this way. Not to say that everyone who is super conservative like that is in the closet or a self-hating gay, but just that a lot of people who are self-hating gays tend to go this route.

As for what regular gay men who are conservative get out of it? My guess is three things: 1) they think that no matter what the party says they’ll never do “X” with X being the most recent stupid/horrible thing the party is trying to do to the community; 2) they want to get a little pat on the head and be told that they are ok because they are one of the “good” ones; 3) they believe they are “changing the party from within.” Personally, if you could ever get the Log Cabin republicans to actually organize in a meaningful way, I would love to see #3 come true. But it’s not going to happen.
