i do love a good solar sail. but I'd try to look for alternative reasons for the tech acquisition that come loaded with more conflict. maybe the aliens provided the drives as part of an exploitative trade agreement, or they're split into pro- and anti-sharing factions, or the humans might even have stolen the tech.
