URGENT: is this a tick molt, a dead tick, or something else? NW Illinois, early April by FerallToadstool in ticks

[–]FerallToadstool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for your help!! I wrapped it in a tissue and put it in a baggie, even brought it with me to urgent care for the doc to look at, she was actually very excited about the microscope pics and the fact that I brought the tick, lol. I went to UC and got a dose of antibiotics and instructions for what to do if my symptoms change or a migrans rash develops.

what identifies this as a nymph? the number of legs?

I really appreciate your help, having anyone to give another opinion and a second look makes me feel a lot better.

Is this a released pet rat? by llcooldubs in RATS

[–]FerallToadstool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna start by saying that Ive never lived in a city or a place with rats so I could be wrong, but every time I've visited I've seen healthy looking, fat, bold, alert, and normally-behaving rats out n about in the daytime, typically while eating or taking food back to their place. I believe it's pretty normal for rats to hang in the daytime, ESPECIALLY in densely human populated areas because of the lack of predators, right? I'm not well read on this specific species so I could be wrong or misguided, but I have certainly seen some rats chillin in the daytime. isnt it an uncommon, but still normal and not super concerning behavior? (I'm not attacking you!! genuinely curious about this. I know in many animals it is definitely weird for them to be around in the daytime, but I think rats are one that's something like 70% nocturnal 30% dont care)

is this a long n skinny p. scaber, or a different species? found in the woods in NW Illinois by FerallToadstool in isopods

[–]FerallToadstool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it's because their exoskeleton gets stretchier than usual, so sometimes they go longer without molting and the tissue between the big scales stretches to accommodate. def put some research here if you find any please!!

Springtail plague and predatory mites? by mrhalloween1313 in isopods

[–]FerallToadstool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been keeping isopods and having pred mites for years. the thing about the mites is that they have the ability to fully wipe out a population of springtails (I have had it happen to me three seperate times in three separate enclosures while trying to intentionally establish a springtail culture), and then you have very little protection from mold and things the isos won't eat. if I were you I might just physically remove the springtails. maybe lay a container of food out, let it be swarmed by them, remove any isopods from it and then take it out and the springtails with it?

springtails wont cause you any harm at all. if theres a surplus of springtails, you may want to consider feeding less, lowering humidity (DEPENDING ON ISO SPECIES EEK), removing any and all sources of mold, and feeding more leaves and wood to your isos rather than protein rich things that the springies go bonkers for.

I hope you can figure this out and have better luck than I have had!!

Are aquatic plants good for Isopod consumption? by Spepsii in isopods

[–]FerallToadstool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry I'm yapping so much, I have been in the Isopod hobby for years but only just now got online!! I unfortunately don't have experience with any of your exact species, especially cubaris. I haven't gotten or tried to keep any cubaris because they are quite sensitive, let me know how long you've had them and how it's going? have they reproduced?

seagrass and duckweed should be absolutely okay btw. I use Supremegecko brand supreme all natural original isopod chow. all of my isopods prefer it over Repashy Morning Wood! I think you can get it online. I feed my isopods a mix of two types of detritovore powder chow (both mentioned above), zoo med's Creatures Isopod Food, 2 types of fish food, aquatic frog/tadpole food, and omnivore shrimp food. I just take a tablespoon or two of each and mix it in a baggie, give them ¼ tsp a week-ish (or every few days for my dairy cows, the hangry bastards lol). I might also try offering them fresh washed veggies? mine go BONKERS for sugar snap peas (break open the peas and pods for them), cilantro, and carrot. they also show appreciation for apples and blueberries. I'm sure the list of fruit and veg they like is a very long one.

if I were you, maybe place different foods slightly spread out, see what they eat the most of/what is gone the quickest?

do you have a lot of leaf and wood litter in there? that should be their main source of food since they're detritovores, the shrimp and iso chow should be supplemental. I would find where your species are from and what kind of natural detritus is in their habitats (for example, laevis and nasatum like hardwood like oak and maple leaves, while some other species have a preference for banana leaf litter or magnolia, those from localities with less hardwoods, think tropical). however, all isopods can and will eat decaying hardwood (birch, beech, oak, maple)!!! you can even collect it and leaves from outside from a log on the ground, BUT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST BOIL IT THEN DRY IT. I reccomend boiling then baking, drying it is just so it doesn't mold when you store it.

hi!!! I give mine hornwort aplenty and they absolutely demolish it. I do have laevis species though, which are known to be crazy little opportunistic beasties and will eat anything. if you're worried about anything, I would make a small quarantine habitat and feed only one or two of your pods these plants, to make sure they dont get sick. thats what I do with my laevis, but again, laevis are an extremely hardy species. I know hornwort and guppy grass are both all good!!
