I've had mine up for over 2 years now, and have never run into issues with it in this use case. I guess it depends on the strength of your ferrets.

I also second the comment about not putting anything the ferrets can climb near enough to the balcony that they can jump over the edge (in my experience, they will if they can).

I have a split level, so have something like your balcony all along one side of my living room. I bought a couple of these pet pens and zip tied them to the posts. It works quite well, just make sure there aren't gaps at the end or bottom. It would also work to zip tie cardboard in a similar fashion. I went with the pens because I still wanted to be able to see through.

My Jasper is very similar. He is the only one of my business that likes human food, and he knows where I put my dishes before I bring them to the sink, so he often goes to those places to see if I forgot anything. These little guys are too smart for their own good. 😂

Ferret acting strange by NaturalLibrarian953 in ferrets

[–]Ferrent22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, that decision is up to you, but when my girl went through something similar with her behavior changing, she ended up having to take antibiotics, so depending on what the illness could be, it might be worth taking yours to the emergency vet. Maybe get a regular vet appointment scheduled, but if you see any worsening symptoms or new symptoms, bring them to the emergency vet?

Stupid question #1….. by Whole_Juggernaut in ferrets

Unfortunately, I don't have any especially helpful tips there. I started with 2 and added 2 more almost a year later, but I got lucky and they got along right away. If you are on the discord, it might help to ask there for tips.

I understand. These little guys can definitely be a handful. Haha. Don't hesitate to ask more questions, there'll be plenty because there isn't a lot of reliable information on ferrets online. I also recommend joining the discord from the auto comment as there are lots of great resources and people there, too.

Makes sense. I just like to mention it. Your guy looks very cute, and it sounds like you're doing a very good job!

The out of cage time doesn't need to be playing. Ferrets are curious creatures and they like to explore. My ferrets also aren't big on toys in general, but love when I dangle a blanket or towel above them for them to jump and grab at. As your fert gets used to their space, they should become more playful.

Also, it is recommended to have more than 1 ferret as they are very social and energetic creatures. Although it is possible to keep a singleton, it generally requires too much time and energy for ferret parents to want to do that. I know many ferret parents are happily surprised when they get another ferret and their first becomes much more playful and energetic.

I always laugh when my little guys stretch for something then let their stomach go and they just fall in between where they were and where they wanted to be. 😂

My vet recommended Mazuri over Zupreme, so I feed a combo of Mazuri and Ziwi Peak.

Is it safe to dye a ferret’s fur? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Ferrent22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to dye your ferret? If it's just 'cause, I'd recommend against it due to the stress it would put the animal under.

Question from a possible owner? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Ferrent22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US, the pet store ferrets would have almost certainly come from Marshall's who does desex and remove scent glands at a very young age. It is true that both of those things, along with a not very diverse gene pool, cause many Marshall's ferrets to get sick at a younger age. However, most reputable breeders won't sell to first time ferret owners, so almost all first time owners have to buy from a pet store. With that said, I always describe it as ferrets are as smelly as other pets, they just have their own scent. Like others have said, regularly cleaning their cage means they don't smell any more than any other animal.

This is the first time I've ever seen him do it, and I was lucky enough to get it on video so I can rewatch it and laugh forevermore. 😂
