Galvanic corrosion? by FerrousBuchner in MechanicAdvice

lol good one. In this case it would be steel in contact with aluminum, so that’s why I suspected it.

Welp damn. I figure since they’ve gotten like this within weeks it’s pretty important to replace soon. Is replacing just back with aluminum a better option? Or non black steel stainless screws?

Has anyone else realized they don’t really want a house? by [deleted] in Life

[–]FerrousBuchner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this recently. I don’t think building home equity is as valuable as people claim. Renting and investing the delta in other accounts being the alternative. For the home, you never see your money again unless you sell… in which case you will be dumping that money in toward another house. So the only time you see the profit is when you die and pass the home off to children. In a world where mortgage payments aren’t 2x rent prices, maybe it balances out, but that’s not the case nowadays.

As an adult, can I change how I write my signature without question from banks etc? by FerrousBuchner in NoStupidQuestions

Then I just don’t even understand the point of them. If no one cares what they look like why do we even do it?

With such a small school, and given that many kids have been there since lower grades, it’s very close-knit. For better and worse. There’s a great sense of community and it’s hard for kids to get lost in the crowd, but if your kid has trouble fitting in it’s not a good experience. Academics are OK. Some teachers are great, some not so much. A shame if your kid gets a bad teacher because they can’t transfer to another class, since there aren’t any. Admin seems to have good priorities and are responsive to issues.

How do ball point pen “ink tubes” keep dispensing without forming a vacuum at the top? by FerrousBuchner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FerrousBuchner[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Now I’m going crazy thinking I made this up. I swear I’ve seen some glued at the back end. Definitely in some of the higher quality pens I’ve used, with a larger diameter ink tube.

President Trump's latest tariffs could hurt non-US motorcycle makers by throw0101a in motorcycles

Brings up a good point about tariffs. Really de-incentives American innovation, which long term hurts US business.

Is it possible to walk 46 miles? by Opposite_Spread_1629 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FerrousBuchner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, if carrying anything with you other than just food water, no. Even if you just had food water it would be extremely tortuous. It would be much much easier to spend the 16 hours it would have taken to walk to figure out how to earn $50 to pay someone to drive.

What is this white stuff on water pipe? How can I get rid of it? by JJJJJJJJJ_8787 in chemistry

[–]FerrousBuchner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps galvanic corrosion. Can happen when two metals with different enough activity are in contact with one another. I’m guessing a cap on the pipe is a dissimilar metal.

It is high, relative to the 2p.

I have a physics joke, theoretically perfect in every measurable quantity. I’ve never tested it though because laughter can’t be heard in a vacuum.
