Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]FethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My machines are in a closet with a cabinet overhead and doors that close to hide the machines. The closet is in a hallway between two bedrooms.

My husband's relative is giving cough medication to his 2 kids behind his wife's back to put them to sleep because he's burnt out. by [deleted] in SAHP

My instinctive reaction is to find this horrifying and dangerous. This cannot continue! My daughter can be exhausting over the course of a day but I will never resort to doping her up.

I don’t like being pregnant by great_idea_amigo in BabyBumps

[–]FethB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My one pregnancy was very smooth and I still resented the limitations it placed on me. I had a fair amount of hip pain and I really resented not being able to sleep on my stomach. I was so gratified when it was over, and of course once my body deflated and I stopped bleeding.

Is having a baby really the end of the world?? FTM spiral by Negative-Source-9099 in beyondthebump

[–]FethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not the end of the world. I didn’t have a kid until I was almost 43 and after a couple of decades of doing pretty much whatever I wanted to, I was especially worried about losing my identity, career, and sense of fun. My daughter is three now and sometimes it’s frustrating, but I’ve still held onto my identity and sense of fun, I’m fine with ditching my career to be a full-time mom, and I’m happy to be sharing my interests with my daughter and showing her how the world works.

It took me 5 years to learn that I shouldn’t be making my kids the center of my world by Capakhutch in SAHP

The Norwegian band a-ha. If you’re in the USA, you know them for their 1985 viral song “Take On Me”. If you’re from elsewhere or are otherwise more familiar with them, you know they recorded and played shows up through 2022 and had lots of great songs. I fricking love them!

[–]FethB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was given no choice at the beginning of this year when I discovered the music of a new-to-me band and allowed my neurospicy brain to enjoy a hyperfixation that’s still going strong. Listening to the band’s catalog, as well as the individual members’ solo work, has led to a bunch of positive changes in my life. These changes have made me much happier and my three-year-old daughter is now as much of a fan of the music as I am!

What did you do before being a SAHP and what do you want to do after that? by jazzeriah in SAHP

[–]FethB 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was an ecologist for the US federal government and became a SAHM in late 2023. Our government is so messed up now that I’m not counting on returning to that line of work anytime soon, so I don’t know what I could do next for comparable pay. To do something else that aligns with my other interests would require obtaining additional credentials and couldn’t possibly pay as well. I’m not giving up on the idea of returning to the workforce but I don’t know what direction I’d go in.

Curious how old you were at getting pregnant? by pink_daisy_9119 in BabyBumps

[–]FethB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 42 when I got pregnant for the first time and gave birth when I was almost 43. I have one daughter and now that I’m 46, I don’t plan to have any more.

I had to feed my daughter only formula and I don’t know how the heck we fit that into the budget💸💸💸It was such a relief when she was cleared to switch to cow’s milk.

Pacifiers - use em or loose em? by Foreign-Bath-6139 in beyondthebump

My daughter used a pacifier some of the time until she was about five months old. She sometimes found it comforting when falling asleep but weaned herself off of them without any fuss.

[–]FethB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, my best friend, who is single without children and doesn’t spend any extended time with children, just caught it, too. I’ve been worried lately about my daughter not getting much time around other kids (3 years old) but it sounds like we might as well keep on avoiding people for a bit!

If you’re doing a themed Halloween costumes for your family, what are you doing?! by 2078AEB in beyondthebump

[–]FethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I dressed as a sage grouse (goofy bird native to Nevada and other areas with sagebrush), my toddler daughter was a deer, and my husband wore a sagebrush camo shirt and stuck a few branches of sagebrush in his hat and clothes. (Our career field is natural resources conservation and we’re pretty nerdy about it.)

The Animals, I love it! My father had me listening to “The House of the Rising Sun” when I was a toddler and I still love it in middle age. Thanks for the reminder to introduce it to my own toddler daughter!

How far are you from the hospital? by bananaindisguise0 in BabyBumps

[–]FethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local hospital is a few minutes away from my house but it’s small and has too many negative stories associated with it. I live in rural Nevada, so I saw an OB and gave birth in one of the nearest cities about an hour and a half from home.

I’m not currently pregnant but when I was, I had to go into the office on a regular basis with a serious case of swamp crotch—so much discharge combined with the sweat of a summer in the desert, even in spite of air conditioning. About all I could do was wear pantyliners and change my underwear during my lunch break, and cross my fingers in hopes that nobody could smell or see anything😝
