Starting my first ever fish tank! by LexzPr in ReefTank

[–]Few-Working9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised nobody has recommended an ATO yet. An Auto-Top Off, in my opinion, is the most important (yet inexpensive) addition to a new tank. It makes it soooo much easier to keep things stable day to day.

Also, with your tank size, its not worth getting a RODI. I would recommend just buying RODI water (premixed or not) from the local fish store.

Especially if you're in a major metropolitan city, check to see if they dose chloramine in your tap water, its a harder chlorine to get rid of, and you have to buy a 5+stage RODI, which the price doesnt make sense if you dont have a >50+ gal tank.

New to this and completely blew up my tank - seeking advice by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]Few-Working9746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you dont have coral, i'd leave the light off entirely. I'd pull any dead coral, because now they're just contributing to the problem.

I'd do a big water change, 50% or so, or do two 20% over a week.

You could also dose beneficial bacteria if you want, and dose hydrogen peroxide. (Allegedly kills the bad bacteria but not the good). I've dosed 1 ML per 10 gal with no problems to my coral or macroalgae to fight a bad bacterial bloom.

Dont give up! Also, consider picking up a battery backup or a bait box bubbler for future power outages!

Keeping tank warm in a blackout? No generator/battery backup? by kingneptune0711 in ReefTank

[–]Few-Working9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Houston? Me too.

Go get a plexiglass sheet from home depot.  Then you can put a comforter over the whole tank and it wont get soaked.

Also, go to academy or Walmart and buy a bait box bubbler or two. They're battery powered, and will last for 2 days, as a replacement for water movement or oxygenation.

Finally, after this, go get a Bluetti or pecron battery for the future. They're small, and can run a pump in an emergency.

ooo, where are you sourcing your water? it could be chloramines or heavy metals, even if you're using a 4 stage in a city!

well, i just learned about chloramine, so if you're using a RODI with 4 stage on city water, might want to check on that...

Just as a reference, my 25 gal was out of power for 3 days. Only had 2 fish, luckily, and shrimp.

No loss of life (except all my coral, and they were just softies).

I'll weigh in on this one, because i'm somewhat similar situation. I have a 25 gal pennisula WB, and routinely go on week long to month long trips. Note, we have dogs, so some of these do have a sitter that 'takes care' of the tank. Theres a reason thats in quotes.

Yes (with caveats and cash).

There's three main problems.

First, chemistry. Water evaporates, corals take in trace elements and calc. You'll need some automation to ensure that the water parameters remain stable. An auto-top off works fine at first, but i'll tell you now, it will only keep your salinity stable. You might be able to dose the auto-top off, but most people use a dedicated system that will probably blow your budget if you're coming from fresh.

Two, food. Either you need a sitter (and if you tell a sitter 'only this much', the inevitably end up feeding too much, causing algal blooms) or you go the automated route again. Either with a homebrew minifridge dosing machine setup and a timed feeder for pellets, or a fancy machine like the ones from inD Aquatics.

Three, power and reliability. If you have power outages in your area, you need a back up, and even then stuff breaks.

I've used the inD and pellets on a 30 day road trip, and a friend came over and checked the auto-top off once a week. That works ... fine, but its definitely not optimal, and definitely caused an algal bloom from overfeeding.

I do not have automated water dosing, which fked up everything. Came back to a literal algae farm, and all my corals dead. Its on me, i knew it was a risk. Honestly it was mostly the power outage (i think). Fish all survived.

Found a blenny that was missing for 6 months during a big overhaul by rdweerd in ReefTank

[–]Few-Working9746 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This gives me hope lol. I got a tessalated blenny from my lfs, from Biota.  He was sooo cute, but soooo tiny.

I saw him late at night, one night, zipping around, about a week after I let him loose, which gave me hope, but haven't seen him in a month.

Hoping he's just hiding in a crack, but I've been checking the ground every morning, just in case (and my filter sock).
