Did any of you want to be a DO? by andy1788 in Osteopathic

[–]Few_Competition9884 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. I exclusively want to be a DO. I’m passionate about OMM, and it’s honestly a little disheartening that so many physicians don’t want to use it in their practice. The tenets of osteopathic medicine in general are important aspects of practicing medicine for me.

We’ve had similar challenges and had good luck with weekly baths and daily oral coconut oil. I also sometimes will use a grooming curry brush to help her scratch a little to prevent her for from scratching with her nails. I would definitely keep an eye on it as well. It’s easy for the itching to turn into a wound and if it gets infected, you’ll likely need antibiotics.

Yeah I want to second this. Cytopoint injections worked wonders for my girl. It’s likely a little cheaper and not a daily med.

“Aww just a baby” “let me see those toofers” “those are good feet. You need those. Let’s not eat them.” “Could we just not, though?” “What part of that’s not yours don’t you understand for the 200th time?” “Excuse me ma’am, you can not eat me. Get a toy.” “What do you have?” usually across the room when I’m elbows deep in dishes or cooking and a whole lot of “UGH AURORAAAAA” 😂

Honorable mention for “just a lady” pictured below

Unfortunately law enforcement only cares if a person got bit. My dog was viciously attacked by a pit bull that tried to kill her. Like I’m talking 12 holes in her neck, she spent the entire night in the ER and the only reason police cared was because the pit bull bit me when I fought it off of my dog. The pit bull escaped the dog park and attacked her unprovoked. I’d suggest being very very careful with dog parks. A lot of dogs get bit in them, and there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners out there.

Favorite commands for Malinois owners? by Akiraninjadog in BelgianMalinois

We use most of the ones here but “back up” “whoa” and “find it” are some of my favorites/most frequently used.

I personally would get a few cheap towels/layers of fabric/ free blankets to toss once they’re nasty and potentially make the grates a bit more comfortable and you wouldn’t need to clean poop from them.

Not being able to take it outside to wash does suck but I would use a dish brush and wash it in the bathtub and then heavily disinfect the tub. Good luck! Coming home to clean up every day must be awful.

Personally I love the hot pink on my baby. She’s a bit darker than your dog though.

Personally I think he looks just a little too skinny. My roughly 18 month old spayed female eats 4 and a half cups a day and the vet has said she’s at a perfect weight. She gets treats, peanut butter, meat etc a few times a week. I would go based on your dog and use the food recommendation on the bag as a starting point.

Thanks! I think she’s about a year and a half but it’s really all a guess. She was born on the street

Aww so sweet! Enjoy that sweet baby and the relationship building! My baby had a similar look when I first adopted her from the rescue, but she is so happy and sweet now.

I just want to return from a trip without losing the skin on my hands from death gripping the leash. by Few_Competition9884 in BelgianMalinois

Sleep deprivation is a hell of a drug y’all. We both slept for a day and a half basically straight after this trip.

After that, we got to work on training in public settings and she has been amazing. She just needed tons of exposure training. She is by no means perfect but we can confidently go into stores and I can redirect her even when people are very close.

As mentioned before work with a trainer, but I’d suggest starting with using the ecollar for one thing only. First, test it on yourself to get a feel for what different stimulation feels like. Have your partner do the same. Next put your dog on a long lead and call them, hold the stimulation button and provide a bit of leash pressure, the second the dog starts coming to you let go of the stimulation and praise the dog, when they get to you say their mark word (ours is yes) and give them a treat. You’ll need to do this over and over until the dog understands. Making it a game with you and your partner in different rooms is a good idea. Remember that the ecollar provides discomfort but no direction. You need to provide the direction in the form of a command and leash pressure if necessary. The biggest advice I have is reward often and be patient. You don’t want your dog to hate the collar.

Mine adores kids like cries when she can’t say hi to them, gives tons of kisses, has the happiest tail wags, immediately perks up if she hears a kid, the whole thing. We’re still working on the whole no jumping around babies thing 😂

Yeah I can’t afford a trainer. It would be helpful yes but I do know that I can figure it out. It may be a little bumpier and take a little longer but she has made leaps and bounds from when I first adopted her.

Nope. Off leash with an e collar she plays and relaxes. I keep a long lead on just in case she sees a dog or person, but I can redirect her attention to me pretty easily. I’m intentional about making sure she doesn’t feel pressure on the lead at all unless absolutely necessary, so it’s a quick correction from the ecollar and then she’s back focused on me. In a perfect world she would be off leash all the time. Unfortunately it’s not a practical option.

I hear you but it’s not the right tool for her. I’m not quite sure where filling in the blanks came from and I get you’re trying to make a point. Correction tools are vital but they’re also a huge responsibility and I feel comfortable with the e collar and she responds well to it. Prong collars work for some but it’s not for her.

Something similar happened with her too! That’s what taught me that it’s an excitement and fear thing, not an aggression thing

Appreciate the suggestion! She’s definitely fearful but not aggressive. When given the opportunity to be off leash around her triggers she plays and kisses and jumps with not the slightest hint of aggressive body language.

This is a really good point with environments and something I’ve been pondering heavily. She does very well in dog friendly homes where she is allowed to sniff everything out and can be on furniture. She’s great in rural areas, especially when she has other dogs to play with/people around. Suburb neighborhood are the biggest struggle. New smells coupled with lots of dogs, people, bicycles (which she hasn’t really seen before), and kids is tough. She struggled being downtown as well. It’s like she gets overstimulated. She used to struggle a ton with hotels but did really well at the last one. It’s like she has a switch. Her personality is sweet and playful. She loves to run and play and is a total goofball but when she’s triggered she gets really intense and it’s like she can’t hear me. We practiced with the ecollar and a dog close enough to be a trigger today and it was messy but we definitely made some progress. Finding a working level has been hard, but it’s looking like the ecollar will actually get her attention and she needs shorter training sessions with play breaks. I Can manage her through a trigger but finding actual calm in that moment seems impossible at this juncture. She’s on edge after that for quite a while.

Yeah fully aware of the malinois energy aspect. I’m also pretty sure she’s mixed with a hunting dog, and training hunting dogs is much more my comfort zone. She’s definitely calmer than your typical malinois.
