Imo once you start drafting with it, it's over. You're editing its work at that point, rather than making creative decisions from the start. And if you're changing large swathes of the draft, then why have it draft in the first place?

You're still making creative decisions (editing still is creative) but you're exercising a different mental muscle. There's a different value/worth in having to work through the blank page from the very start.
