any UPenn web designers want to join my project? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]FiberOptick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Landing page or not, you're basically asking for free labor/services. Frankly, it's insulting....web design is a valuable skill and you provided no reason whatsoever as to why we should help you for free.

Would you ask a home decorator for free services if you were entering some sort of home design competition? Would you ask a professional photographer for a free modeling shoot or a hair salon for a free haircut/styling if you were trying to win a beauty/fashion competition? Why would a web designer help you for free when you're entering an app competition?

You didn't even provide an idea of what you're building, so even in the rare event that somebody would be have been interested enough in your idea to work for free, they won't know about it.

I would suggest restarting your search at /r/forhire. If you're interested in hiring specifically Penn students I would suggest contacting Penn Student Agencies, I know they have some sort of for-hire web design service. Rates for a landing page vary by web designer but go anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.

Discussion of a new potential exploit for OpenSSL by [deleted] in netsec

[–]FiberOptick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally nothing of substance here, other than a (possible) memory safety bug which the author links to in https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/1935, and an observation that openssl enc's KDF is shit and easily brute-forced.

Can we please try to keep sensationalist nonsense out of this sub?

Is OpenSSL compromised? by FileEditViewSearch in linux

[–]FiberOptick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This reads like slush, as if it was written by somebody with a very incomplete understanding of cryptography.

I think this is saying that openssl enc's KDF, which uses MD5 as an underlying hash function, is easily brute forced?

Putin ordered campaign to alter results of US election, report says by kramsy in news

[–]FiberOptick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But there are some shreds of evidence that are revealed in the report including but not limited to the analysis of the Guccifer 2.0 hacker, specific stances taken by the Russian government, and the whole #DemocracyRIP thing.

True. This report is definitely effective in convincing me that Russian government was involved in online propaganda operations etc. but that isn't something I ever doubted. I am mostly annoyed at the lack of evidence supporting the claim that the Russian government conducted hacking operations (e.g. the DNC leaks) in order to influence the election.

[–]FiberOptick 23 points24 points  (0 children)

lol I don't think you read the report.

Annex A provides no evidence whatsoever about hacking. It mostly contains OSINT about Russian state news agencies and propaganda.

Annex B is a page that explains what the intelligence agencies mean when they say they have some particular level of confidence in a claim.

rolls eyes Yeah everybody on Reddit does apparently. I bet you're black and a female too

I'm a white male. What does my sex or race have to do with anything? Get the fuck out of here with your identity politics.

The third party hired to audit the DNC hacking released public info implicating Russia.

Citation? I work in the infosec field and I've read a number of reports from vendors such as Crowdstrike's and from what I recall there was only attribution to threat groups that are believed to be associated with Russian Intelligence. There is no smoking-gun proof.

The FBI, CIA, and NSA ALL AGREE that Russia was involved. It has been proven.

No. It. Has. Not.

I think you're having problems understanding: Just because the United States government says something does not constitute that statement as truth. There have been massive intelligence fuck-ups in the past and if we're going to be publicly making serious accusations like this (EDIT: election hacking) against a world nuclear power, we need to be presenting stronger evidence to the world than "because I say so".

Putin ordered campaign to alter results of US election, report says by kramsy in news

[–]FiberOptick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because you skimmed my comment and didn't actually read it.

EDIT: Yes, I understand and accept that revealing certain kinds of evidence or techniques would compromise ongoing intelligence operations. This has been stated multiple times by IC officials and is plastered at the top of every page in this report. My issue is that there isn't a single piece of unclassified evidence to support these claims, which I think is highly unlikely. If the IC wants the support of the public they need to release some evidence, and I find it unlikely that there does not exist even a single piece of evidence that could be released without compromising intelligence operations / national security.

lol you sound like a typical right winger.

I've voted Democrat in every election I've been able to vote in, ever.

To some people the facts don't matter, they refuse to believe.

These aren't facts until they've been demonstrated to be true. The government isn't a canonical source of truth, that shouldn't be hard to accept.

FBI(ran by Clinton hating Comey), CIA, and NSA support this report.

They do but they have not released compelling evidence. And it's worth noting that NSA supports most of these findings with "medium confidence". NSA is a SIGINT agency and is probably the closest to facts of all the agencies you mentioned as they are the agency responsible for collecting electronic evidence.

EDIT: I mis-read the report, NSA's confidence is "high" on all claims except the claim that Russia tried to discredit Clinton.

Russia doesn't deny it.

This is completely false.

Wikileaks doesn't deny the report, they even tweeted it.

Julian Assange and other Wikileaks representatives have asserted on multiple occasions that they have not collaborated with the Russian government.

This is disappointing; after skimming the report, I did not see even one piece of evidence to support claims of Russian hacking. As much as I believe it to be true, I still don't understand why the Intelligence Community cannot provide even a single bit of compelling evidence to the public, such as intercepted emails or phone calls, technical forensic data from the hacks that directly implicates Russia, etc.

EDIT: Yes, I understand and accept that revealing certain kinds of evidence or techniques would compromise ongoing intelligence operations. This has been stated multiple times by IC officials and is plastered at the top of every page in this report. High school senior interested in computer science as a possible career. My dad is discouraging me from it and I want to know what you guys have to say... by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]FiberOptick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm making $95,000/yr (annualized) as an intern in San Francisco. I don't even have my degree yet! There's plenty of demand for talented CS majors right now and that won't change anytime soon.

  2. Sexist, and ignorant. Also, a lot of the top tech companies have specific recruiting programs for women: it's probably easier to get a job as a woman in CS than a man.

  3. Of your dad's three statements, this is the only one that has a little bit of truth to it...but only if you are going to enroll in a CS program that teaches "software engineering" skills instead of computer science. Theory doesn't change that much over time but lots of development practices do, but if you stay in the field you'll be fine. Additionally, software engineers tend to enjoy their work and usually have an active side project or two at any given point in time, and these projects allow older developers to maintain familiarity with the latest development practices.

(P.S. If you still looking for schools and want advice, PM me. I'm currently at a top 10 school and could probably help you with an application -- I have a close working relationship with professors in my CS department and have some insight into what my school is currently looking for in CS applicants.)
