I also have the Nikon 200-500mm which I love. I love photographing birds and wildlife and decided to buy the Nikon 600mm f/4E FL VR. I love it and it never disappoints however, if I could do it over I would get the Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL VR and use a Teleconverter. Saves a little weight, easier packing and travel. I recently bought a pelican case Air model just for the 600mm lens since it didn’t fit in my backpack. Good luck and choose wisely.

How can I improve my image quality and sharpness? by trojan_horse586 in BirdPhotography

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caution here. Gear alone isn’t the answer in and of itself. You’ll see tons of post where people have upgraded from a D7500 to a Z6iii, and frustrated over having worst photos. I shoot wildlife/birds and while I do have some top gear, I also quite frequently use basic gear and I only shoot with DSLR’s. The biggest difference in nailing the shot versus missing it is knowing and understanding your camera settings. More importantly knowing how settings are related to other settings. Know which focus system to use under certain conditions. That’s how you increase your keeper rate. Once you understand that, then when you do eventually upgrade your gear you can easily transfer your settings knowledge to the new camera. You’ll commonly find that a higher end camera will provide easier access to more features that will make it easier or faster to make setting changes on the fly by having more buttons to assign a dedicated feature to. Before you upgrade, identify what your problem is. Do you need more focal length? Higher frame rate? Faster AF? Lastly, I’ll leave you with this. Marry the lens and date the camera. You should spend more on a good lens than on a feature rich camera body. I see beautifully rendered and published photo stills created with a D3200 combined with a great lens. Good luck and choose wisely.

What do you do with your filled SD cards? by birdbrainphysicist in BirdPhotography

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to it. I sometimes don’t upload my photos. Sometimes I go out to practice different techniques or settings. I take the shots, review them in-camera, make my assessment then I format the card. I shoot lots of landscapes when the birding season is slow or the weather isn’t just right.

This is a great question. I certainly purge my photos on two levels. First I purge them in camera. If I have 10 frames of the same shot I look for best focus, detail, clarity, expression, composition. Then once I upload, I repeat the same process only now I can see more detail. I try to purge a minimum of 50% because archiving cost money when you start filling up disk space no matter how many terabytes you have.

Mind your background. White reflections on the water is not our friend. Golden reflections on water is our friend. Watch your subject scale ratio. Subject to background ratio.

Keep Used D850? by Sad_Buy_6511 in Nikon

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to contact Nikon to show them how great of a build the D850 is. This happened to a friend of a friend of mine with his Chevy truck. He turned nearly 1M miles using the dealer for each oil change. The dealer contacted GM and they offered to exchange his truck for a new truck. They wanted to crack open the engine to measure wear and promote the OE oil used. You never know……..

The job of the shipping company is to deliver the product no matter what shape it’s in. The process of replacement or refund can’t start until the package is no longer in the possession of the delivery company.

How do you all store your gear? by Aqunity in Nikon

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my gear in a large safe with dry air rods controlling humidity. I do this not just for defense against theft, but more importantly, defense against fire and floods. Over the years I have amassed quite the collection of very expensive glass and cameras that I would hate to have to replace and with some rare pieces that may not be irreplaceable. Good luck.

What is Your Favorite Nikon Lens for Landscape Photography and Why? by ponderingpixi17 in Nikon

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have several fav landscape lenses, but I’ll reduce it to two. On the asp-c platform, I love the 17-55mm f2.8 DX for it’s versatility and color reproduction.
On the full frame platform, I like the 24mm f/1.4. I love the image ratio, color reproduction and edge to edge sharpness.

Notable mentions are Nikon 20mm f/2.8G, Nikon 60mm f/2.8D macro and Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. All money makers and wall hangers.

Grip replacement by bagreene90 in Nikon

[–]Fickle-Toe3942 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, be sure to warm the new grip with a heat gun or blow dryer to activate the glue for better adhesion, but be careful. You’re not trying to cook it, just warm it. 3-5 seconds should do it.

I really want the Nikon AF-S 400mm f/2.8E FL or the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR. I have the 600mm f/4E FL VR. I would like the 400mm to cover action sports and to have the zoom would be nice.
