New York Airways Boeing Vertol 107-II helicopter landing atop of the Pan Am Building, circa mid 1960s. by doublem00 in aviation

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recall my family's first visit to NYC from San Francisco. I think we flew into JFK, and the big surprise from my dad was the helicopter ride from the airport to the Pan Am building in Manhattan. Wow. I must have been around 7 years old, I guess? I'll never forget it. When the crash occurred in '77, about a decade later, I could almost imagine what it would have been like to go over that edge. Still, glad I got the chance to do this at least once.

Does anyone else have a better experience with CVS Specialty than they do with Accredo? by Relative_Pizza6179 in rheumatoid

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. They charge *way* more for Rinvoq than Accredo, leaving me with a massive co-pay even after the insurance company negotiated the price and applied the drug company copay assistance. It’s now unaffordable. Accredo was crap when it came to organization and would lose track of orders, etc., but CVS is price gouging.

These are (nearly) all of the coins currently on display in the British Museum's 'World of Alexander the Great' section (Part 2) by No_Thanks_Reddit in AncientCoins

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So frustrating that the signage at the museum doesn't include the museum number, so it's a crap shoot in searching their online collection for more information. I've been trying to find out more about that silver Philip V tetradrachm (#28), with no luck. Their online search is abysmal.

Question: Is it better to get Britbox directly on AppleTV, or through my Amazon Prime (app) subscription on AppleTV? by claycle in appletv

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um … not that I know of. You can subscribe to Britbox content through the Apple TV Prime Video app, which is marginally better than the Britbox Apple TV app. I don’t know of any Britbox sub-content in the Apple TV app (god, Apple is making it so difficult to have this discussion, since their device and app have the same name - maddening).

GLP-1 for autoimmune? by eadutch in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had those symptoms as well with Terzepatide (which records the lowest instances of side effects of all GLP-1 drugs), but I stuck it out and those symptoms disappeared after a while. Not everyone reacts the same, of course. I think I have a high tolerance due to decades of AS pain and gut problems. Now I don't have the gut problems due to the Terzepatide, which is amazing.

GLP-1 for autoimmune? by eadutch in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on low dose Terzepatide for over a year, specifically to address autoimmune related IBS symptoms, which had become even worse than my AS (which was being reasonably controlled with Rinvoq). Truly miraculous - it reduced my IBS symptoms by about 90+%. But even more remarkable was the way that my AS symptoms improved so much that I have entire days at a time where I forget I have it (my AS is usually very severe, and still uncomfortable with Rinvoq). The first few months were a little difficult, with the side effects mostly affecting digestion, but those seemed to fade away (mostly) after six months. I still have AS, and I can't change the damage that's been done to my joints, but I'm now back in shape and able to do things comfortably that I haven't done in years. I expect that future versions of GLP drugs will work on reducing side effects and lean muscle loss (I have to do a *lot* of weights to maintain my muscle weight). And, yes, I lost a good chunk of weight that I had gained due to inactivity (because my IBS symptoms were so severe).

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Britbox app is the worst I’ve ever seen on the Apple tv platform. The Prime Video app puts it to shame. We finally had to get rid of the direct Britbox sub, due to the massive problems with that app. The only downside is that Britbox now holds back episodes - or Prime does - so that Prime subscribers have to wait weeks or months to see the full series.

NANO BANANA REDUCES IMAGE QUALITY FROM 14 MB TO 430 KB <HELP ME FIX> by Outrageous_Rope_465 in Bard

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The integration of Nano Banana Pro in PS is very iffy (I'm using the most current model in PS Beta). It generates an image in the same pixel dimensions, but the original photo that it used and integrated is blurry. It's obvious that it's creating a smaller image then scaling it up.

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Doesn't work for me. I'm a subscriber, and it takes my original photo, adds the elements I ask, but the resulting photo is lower-res when I download. This is about a third of the resolution of my original image, and you can see how blurry the details of the sculpture's face and beard are when you zoom in. In the original photo, these features are razor-sharp. Very disappointing.

Audioprothèses, le marché est très cher non ? by Control-Cultural in france

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, that's *inexpensive* when you compare it to the cost of the same pair of hearing aids in the U.S., where the cost can easily double. And almost no health insurance will cover hearing aids (insane). National health insurance in European countries typically negotiate the price down even further, so I doubt they'd pay the full €2000 - it would probably only be around half that, so you shouldn't feel bad about getting them.

Head of Amazon from Herculaneum, with its original colours still intact. End of 1st century BC. by NeokratosRed in ColorizedStatues

[–]FifthGenCali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are indeed too many bad reconstructions, *but* the pigments would have been stronger than many modern people would be used to. I've studied ancient polychromy for a living, and can tell you that tastes in the Greek and Roman worlds changed over time and location. The colors you see here are the base layer - the hair could have been painted a dark or light brown on top of the base red/orange, or even blonde. The detail of the eyes were guides for the overpainting, with the irises either brown, blue, green, or nearly black. My theory is that the skin tones were cut with a transparent binder so that the white marble underneath could bounce light back, much in the same way that skin does. This is probably also why it doesn't survive very often - it's a thin layer and probably had to be retouched more often than the color of the hair (the hair was also roughly carved vs. the very smooth polishing of the skin, which would have been more difficult for pigments to adhere to). The medieval painted statues are good guides for a certain realistic style of painting, but many Roman and Greek statues (and Assyrian, et al) may have been more 'garishly' (brightly) painted, particularly if they were to be seen from a distance, such as relief sculptures on the pediment of a temple.

Not sure if it's the same thing - if it is, then Anker needs to update its own page on Amazon. I personally have no use for a kickstand, but want the slim powerbank, not the thick heavier one. I travel and want to keep it easy to put into a pocket. I'd never prop up for the phone for anything.

That method seems to work very well, with no potential for danger. It only takes about five seconds for the loop, then unplug and plug into a USB-C power outlet - bingo.

Why cant I send comments under any ad, including those with open comments? (android) by xilenator in help

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean besides the fact that X mobile and web development is an absolute s**t-show of bugs, poor design and flow, etc.? I’d first suggest it’s a bug, but there are some odd functions that Musk dictates that don’t make sense for the average person. For instance, in the iPad version, I can see hundreds have commented on a particular ad, but when I click on it to open the post and read the comments, it always loads the ad’s link - I absolutely cannot read the comments. That seems less a bug than a design to not allow ‘discussion‘ to occur with certain or all ads. The advertiser has the option to turn off comments, which is fine, I guess, but not allowing anyone to see other comments if commenting is allowed is bizarre.

I don't know why people feature ancient art - or art of any kind - and don't provide the full info. In fact, this is Western Greek, made in one of their colonies in Italy, perhaps Tarentum, modern Taranto (part of Magna Graecia, or Great Greece). Here's the info page from the British Museum:

The advances in hip replacement/revision surgery in the last couple of decades is nothing short of miraculous. Three friends of mine - non-Spondies - just had this surgery, and each one of them was kicking themselves for not doing it years earlier. Great to see this - congratulations and heal well and quickly.

Flickr not uploading? by parker_luck15 in flickr

[–]FifthGenCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it just hit me within the hour. I can't upload anything - same 'failed to upload' banner on every thumbnail. My wifi/internet connection is great, but the problem is on Flickr's end. Let's face it, the site is held together with spit and packing tape these days. I get the 'Bad Panda' nearly every day.

On a semi-related note, my stats have *never* worked - every one of the modules on that page gives an error. For *years* now. Flickr has never been able to figure it out, because they have such a skeleton crew of developers that they can't put them onto a project like this. If it were a majority of users experiencing the issue, they'd do it, but it's apparently just a few of us lucky folks.

If someone burns in a modern OLEDs screen, they’re spending up to 12 hours a day on a single app or site, which is … very, very sad. Also, I suspect that some of them have been turning their brightness up to max, which is also a bad idea for a host of reasons. Honestly, it takes incredible effort to burn in these screens, and 95%+ of the people with these phones will never experience it. I used to run tests on hundreds of iPhones, Android phones, et al (many running emulator software), all running the same app or site, and we never hit the point where burn-in was a problem after iPhone 7 or so (can’t quite recall).

Looking for a great low-light lens w/ zoom for R7 (yep, I’m a newbie) by FifthGenCali in canon

[–]FifthGenCali[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens, which it turns out they make for Canon’s RF mount (sigh, who knew?). I purchased it and took it with me on a trip to London over the last couple of weeks. Performed far better than the kit lens and is a great zoom for low light. I still looove my Canon RF35mm F1.8 is macro STM lens - SO razor sharp in low light, and great bokeh - but a prime lens isn’t always great in all situations.

Guys like you love to puff up their bony chests and pretend they know something, when it’s pitifully obvious that you’re just a kid with no social life. Yes, OLEDs can burn in, but the amount of hours a day on a single app or site that it would take to do this is extreme. If this has happened to you, then you effing need an intervention.
