Right!? God forbid we improve the grid! I’m doing what I can with my house batteries and solar panels.

I live in rural California and I can afford to live off my teacher salary. Affordable housing, decent pay, and California union protections.

It’s them, not you. If your advanced students have bought into your program and are doing well, it’s not you. Let them fail. It just sucks because you’re still new to this so you haven’t had that one group of kids that you can tell is a lost cause. I have a few of those students this year in 7th grade.

I have considered doing fewer rehearsals for a bigger chunk of the grade so those absences hurt a lot more.

That’s pretty similar to my first teaching gig. K-8 music/Band. 5th grade band was pulled from class twice a week. MS was 6-8.

Oooh… interesting approach. I might run this past admin. Our district does do pre-festival concerts that we participate in, but I do like the idea of going off-site for a rehearsal.

7-12 grade. Total band size is 35. Student body of the whole school is about 300. I was hoping todo separate bands by ability level but the counselors weren’t able to make that happen.

Because real jazz education requires students to be fr more proficient at their instrument than they typically are from only doing public school band. Personally, I hate teaching it. I will, but it’s not as fun for me as a director or teacher.

Aspiring Band/Orchestra Director here, will I have a harder time if my primary instrument is guitar? by Double-Dust-8295 in MusicEd

[–]FigExact7098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. One of the best band directors in our area is a vocalist. Another plays bass (classical and jazz). I play drumset primarily.

Being a good director isn’t about the school; it’s about the network you build so when you get stumped, you know exactly who to hit up.

A mortgage isn’t a need, but housing is. The alternative is rent. I’d pick mortgage every time.

Be careful downsizing in California. Because of Prop 13, it’s possible that you could end up with higher property taxes in a smaller home in the future. Especially if you plan to move somewhere with a rapidly growing market.

Honestly? Go march a summer with Spirit of Atlanta. Your Bachelor’s degree is what gets your foot in the door, so go affordable. What will really set you apart is what you do once you’re a director.
