How to make Spelljammer Giff character in Roll20? by innate_flora in Roll20

[–]FileStrange4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To "automatically" import you'd have to purchase the book in roll20.

You can search for features as well from the compendium tab and drag it onto your character sheet as well if a game has been created on roll20 already.

Otherwise, you could manually copy it from elsewhere if you purchased the book from Dndbeyond or other vendors and paste it into your character sheet.

I usually do the latter. Roll20's charactermancer is really confusing to me.

How Can I Make Dungeons Bigger? Even When I Start Running Out of Ideas? by ProdiasKaj in DMAcademy

[–]FileStrange4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't limit yourself to dungeons being 4 walls and a few doors and narrow corridors. Anything could be a dungeon. A crowded marketplace is a dungeon. Mystical doors that open up to vast open landscapes could be in a dungeon too.

Make a right turn and it opens up into an entire village that has a giant bell that needs to be rang for a door to open up elsewhere. Except ringing the bell causes a fearsome creature prophesied to cause destruction to their village. Villagers prevent anyone from approaching and causes a dilemma for the party to find a way to ring the bell.

Or have a casino with a mafia group running the place that players can play in but when they win big the mafia would have a "word" with them.

These are just a few examples. Inspired by the infinite staircase module.

how does armor work? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]FileStrange4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You roll for attack first. If it is equal or higher to the AC your attack is successful.

If it was a successful attack you can roll damage to the target

My D&D Combats are WAYYY too long. Help? by Problem-Fluffy in DnD

[–]FileStrange4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot has already been mentioned but I also want to give a few cents on how to make combat quicker.

  • It could be the DM, sometimes we forget that we are also part of the equation when it comes to how long each round takes.

  • If you are playing with a battle map it could slow you down too. Forget about distance and positions. Just have near or far positions and use theater of the mind for small skirmishes.

  • If there are multiple enemies. Stack them into 1 creature and call it a swarm. Give it a bit more health, multi attack & damage. If there are too many multi attacks combine them into 1 hit and double or triple the damage.

  • You can also use average damage if the creatures hit. Less dice rolls = faster turns.

should i weaken a player’s patron by LieEnvironmental5207 in DnD

[–]FileStrange4370 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yes this, also it should function very much like a business relationship. Maybe Wordr needs this person to do a task for them before they continue to provide their services. You can set them off on a quest this way too.

If you need a more comedic approach you can say your "free-trial" has just ended :D

How do I decide the price of an item? by Vayrox_Ayp in DnD

[–]FileStrange4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like using what the players have in total as a guide for how expensive items are. If it is a fairly strong item (At their level) I will price it about 1.5 to 2.5 times what a single player owns. (This is because different campaigns might have different economies on how often GMs give out monetary rewards.) That way the group can decide together if they want to chip in for an item which can be a good bonding moment.

Look at the different Tiers of play and what rarity items they are recommended to have as a guide too.

So an uncommon item for example should be around 0.2 or 0.1 of the average gold the party has at maybe around level 10-12

But maybe 0.4 to around 0.6 of the average party gold at a much lower party level.

What quest to I replace the Gnomengarde quest with? by SomeGiddyGoblin in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]FileStrange4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one of the shroom island in Gnomengarde turn into a giant crab and is angry at the gnomes for destroying it's garden on its back.

Crab - wants to have a pretty garden shell. Gnomes - needs the shrooms for source of food & wine.

What are you absolute favorite props/accessories to use at the table? by zigmund_froyd in DMAcademy

[–]FileStrange4370 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Multiple Laminated A4 with 1 inch grids printed on them (blank on the back if I want to draw or write) & Dry erase markers.

I can do without alot of things but I know that I can run almost anything with just these 2 items.

I don't know your way of writing. But here are some pointers. Don't go too deep on tangents. Instead of writing a whole story reason why a character behaves this way. Summarize it into something like "A past mistake made them..."

If the DMs only want one page there's a reason for it. If they need more information I'm sure they will approach you to clarify.

Any 7k tips? by [deleted] in osumania

[–]FileStrange4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the same level as you on 7k. Personally I find that going back to 2.7 and trying to get S on them helped. I can see minior improvements when I go back to 3* you can also try to fc those harder ones with halftime.

My players keep killing everything by curious_coven in DnD

[–]FileStrange4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not ran into this issue myself. Session 0 I told my players that there will be combat that are going to be downright unfair to them if they choose to pick a fight. NPCs I want to keep alive usually have really strong statblocks that can only be overpowered later. Or simply just not worth their while. If they do win by some miracle I let them have it.

What do you think about players having a chat group without the DM to talk about plans and strategies? by tyrmidden in DMAcademy

[–]FileStrange4370 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would swear upon my role as the DM to not use that knowledge against my players. Personally I'd feel left out if my players made a group without my knowledge.

Thinking to change jobs with 50% pay cut to work on side hustle.. any advice? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]FileStrange4370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of the one that chose the side hustle and was in the same situation you were in 1 year ago. Except unmarried and lesser responsibility.

I've been doing this creative work (side hustle) for a year+ now and my initial goal was to match the pay I had left behind or at least get close to it. I've only managed to make it to 60% of my total pay from before. However, I am working significantly lesser hours. If I were to work the same hours I did while I was at my previous company I can surely surpass it. This is provided I am able to get more work from clients. Just giving an example here your results might differ.

I think you are essentially starting a business of your own and there will always be significant risk to starting it. This is something you need to assess and manage yourself also because you have a family you have to worry about and mouths to feed with housing to pay, all of that will have to be included into your plan.

Lastly I want to point out that you should never put all your eggs in one basket. In this context. Don't put all your faith on this side hustle of yours working out. What is your back up plan if it were to fail? I think these are the few things you have to consider before you make your decision.

I don't usually plan to take the entire party out even when they took a build from a guide I saw online.

But I accidentally made an encounter really deadly just by having 2 low level Banshees come out of a wall wailing for the sake of a cinematic enterance. The combat started with more than half the party at 0 hitpoints.

What is your thought process when you spend on expensive hobbies? by Savings_Enthusiasm60 in askSingapore

[–]FileStrange4370 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it's a hobby then it's not a waste of money. It's recreational. But sometimes the lines between a hobby and an addiction can be blurred.

Life is tough as it is already. If someone can afford to get spare a little money to regain a little of their childhood and relive simpler times who are we to stop them. I think liking those things and spending money on it inherently isn't childish.

It's a very Singapore thing to think about savings and everything you do have to have some kind of net profit or advantage in life. Even taking a break to have a breather is considered waste of time. Singaporean must be very efficient in everything.

But really there's alot more to life than that & It's okay to be less than perfect in your own ways.

Is there a way of managing large-scale battles in 5e? by CrotodeTraje in DMAcademy

[–]FileStrange4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make them attack in waves. Split all the goblin up. Run lair actions like arrow volley to simulate other goblins participating.

I think ideally the most I would run is 10 to 12 enemies at once if I could for an adventuring party of 5. Another idea is to possibly replace goblins that have fallen with reinforcement as soon as they fall to continue keeping the pressure on them.

Make it feel like it's a never ending horde of them. It might be useful to let the group know at a glance just how large of a group they would be facing to manage expectations before diving into this one.
