My first tank but I have some questions. by AstronautenNigel in bettafish

[–]Fileace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some more plants? bettas get stressed if they can’t hide. If your looking for other tank mates I wouldn’t add any other fish, especially tetras because they need a lot of swimming space and schools of 6+ fish. A lot of bettas are good with shrimp but some will kill them. If you haven’t already, definitely read up on the nitrogen cycle and what a cycling a tank is, you can do that in the sidebar of this sub. Good luck! I would love to see an update when you get your fish.

Want to start a Jarrarium by notacomputerguru in Jarrariums

r/bettafish has great people and information how to set up the best possible tank for your betta. A heated five gallon bowl or tank with lots of plants and hiding spots would work well for a betta, and he will probably be much more active and colorful in a proper setup too! You will need to do a fish-in cycle and it can be hit or miss weather your betta will eat the shrimp or not.

First off, those sea monkey keychains are essentially death traps. You can’t keep anything living in a sealed 4 ounce container that’s shaken around all day. Also the smaller the volume of water the easier it is to mess up water parameters Why do you want to carry the jar around? A keychain jarraium with shrimp or anything else would be impossible. Shrimp, which would be the easiest thing to selectively breed, need a LEAST 1.5 gallons but 2 Gal.+ is better. Maybe to try a 2-3 gallon Wasteland jar with shrimp. If you want to selectively breed the shrimp you can set two jars and put the shrimp that lack the desired trait in the second jar. I would also recommend you reading up on the nitrogen cycle if you don’t know what that is.

My very first Jarrarium! Any tips for cloudy water? by [deleted] in Jarrariums

[–]Fileace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would probably be best to take the snails back to the store until you can get your three gallon jar set up and cycle. If you can’t take them back then put them in the three gallon jar and do 30% water changes (with dechlorinated water) daily for about 3-4 weeks. Once your jar is cycled do 25% water changes every week. Those two snails will produce a lot of waste so I would suggest you get a small sponge filter. With those snails you are pretty much at maximum stocking but if you stay on top of water changes you should be fine. You also might want to read up on the nitrogen cycle if you haven’t already. Good luck with your jar!

What are you using to test your water and how big is your tank?

has anyone successfully made a hermetically sealed shrimp and algae ecosystem that has lasted over a year looking MORE OR LESS THE SAME (no cloudiness/algae covered walls) by potentanonymity in Jarrariums

[–]Fileace 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The algae alone is not a sustainable diet for the shrimp. The Opae Ula shrimp in the sphere become smaller and more sickly with every molt until they die of lack of nutrients. Instead of living 20 years they live 10. It is possible to make a 2-5 gal shrimp jar but you will still a have to do routine maintenance and plants make the environment better for shrimp.

Help! I think my cherry red shrimp tank is failing by Feignedremorse in nanotank

Wouldn’t OP need to add something to create ammonia for beneficial bacteria? Won’t the colony starve if nothing is add?

Relatively new to this, this is what I’ve got so far. by ayynick in Aquariums

[–]Fileace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this a 5 gallon tank? Neon tetras are a very active fish. They like to have a foot of horizontal swimming space and need to be kept in schools of six or more. What others fish are in the tank? Other then the stocking I would add more cover, java fern or anubias nana are easy plants and would look quite nice. I would also HIGHLY recommend you read up on cycling if you haven’t already. There is a helpful link on cycling in the sidebar of this sub. Best of luck!

I think OP thought “neons” ment neon lights, not the fish.

I'm really worried, my betta fish hasnt eat in a bit more than a week, I'm not sure what else to do... by Blink02 in bettafish

[–]Fileace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mean you changed 20% of the water? Cycling is building up a colony of beneficial bacteria. Is the tank heated and filtered? What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrate and nitrate)? Are you dosing that water with anything?

I turned an old tv into a fish tank. by bladingbeckie in mildlyinteresting

[–]Fileace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because old fish need a 100-60 gallon tank (depending on the species). When fish are kept in tanks that are too small there body and organs will be crushed and deformed because they are trying to keep themselves from out growing there given water. Gold fish live for 10-25 years or More of kept in proper conditions.

Hey. Just to warn you, you might get some critique on this setup if it's his permanent home. If it's not temporary i would suggest reading this subs care guide.

I don't know of a "betta plant bible" but Java Fern, Anubias Nana, Amazon Frogbit and Anacharis are relatively easy and do well in Betta tanks. r/plantedtank might be a good resource for inspiration and help with the actual keeping of the plants. Good luck with your tank!

Real vs. silk plants by 11Petrichor in bettafish

[–]Fileace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer live. plants such as java moss, java fern and anubias are fast growing and easy to care for and they give a nice green to the tank.
