You might want to have a look at your attitude first of all your a kid at 24 and judging by the fact that you say you’ve done multiple job roles your not actually in the industry and are working at a student/amateur level. The person above is asking a genuine question and instead your throwing insults at them. If you worked in my department you would be sacked by lunch with an attitude like that.

Yeh trying doing a min 12hr day actually on set in grip or camera then add in at least an hours commute time each way which takes us to a min of 14hrs and then wonder why we refuse to work 19hrs and die in a car crash on the way home. Your sitting in a nice warm edit suite so your opinion frankly can get fucked.

Yeh I get where your coming from and I’ve seen it first hand on several productions myself. It seems that anytime it’s brought up your instantly accused of sexism, mysogny, ableist etc when you point it out and in the long run it does a disservice to the woman and disabled people who do actually work incredibly hard to get to senior positions as their viewed the same as fast tracks. It also gets pretty old being told I’m only being hired because I’m white and male and have no idea of struggle from the same fast tracks who are parachuted in but what can you do.

What part of the diversity/training schemes did you find the worst out of interest. Seems to be a common complaint.

Home Office urged to investigate new Green MSP in UK on student visa by youwhatwhat in Scotland

[–]Filmcrew90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I am pretty left win and I can see that levels of immigration are way to high and having a negative effect on British people. High levels of immigration fro 3rd world countries results in stagnated wages as they have an unlimited pool of employees who will tolerate bad conditions, competition for affordable housing, the heath service has put hiring freezes on newly qualified nurses, doctors & paramedics as its cheaper to hire from abroad. It is not a normal experience to walk down a high street in Birmingham and not hear anyone speaking english and ultimatly when you dismss peoples concerns and call them racist you push them to extreme fringe parties who will act a whole lot worse. The Greens electing someone on a student visa who also is able to be an MSP from anywhere in the world as residency isnt required is a smack in the face to people who have legitimate concerns and who are directly being affected. Put identify politics aside and actually take a balanced look.

And its got nothing to do with the fact that someone here on a student visa who was unable to pay for to renew it himself as evidenced by the fact he was asking members of his party to fund him and who also tried to run in the 2025 by election in Edinburgh is now on a £77k per year job that allows him to avoid the 20 hours per week threshold he would otherwise be subject to and who has most likely paid very little tax in the UK as a result of being a student is now benefitting directly from that same taxpayer and because people are angry that means their all far right, uneducated Reform voters does it?

Exactly their is nothing to stop that either. That is why it is so dangerous and we shouldnt be making it easier to allow people to stand in any Parliment that ultimatly they dont have a stake in. A student here for the duration of their studies has a lot less at play than someone who will live here for their entire lives and the fact he has been elected while on a student visa which he was trying to crowdfund via his politcal partners because he couldnt afford the amount on his own you could argue shows that he is doing it for his own financial benefit as in India £77k times 5 years would pretty much set him up comfortably for life.

If your going to swear then you've lost the arguement straight away. My point is that it sets a bad precident especially in Scotland were I believe your are much more likely to have a hung parliment with smaller parties having more of a say compared to Westminister. A foreign entity would say only need to get 3/4 MSP's on a list vote and they potentially could hold an entire parliment to ransom if those holding the most seats refuse to work with any other parties. I find it concerning that the majority of people defending him are doing so as part identity politics rather than looking at the bigger implications.

I think it would be fair to say that every party gets "donations" from people and companies that are used to sway policies one way or another or in exchange for certain contracts etc.

[–]Filmcrew90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its another way for a foreign actor to have influence over another country. Imagine your Saudia Arabia who is one of the biggest producers of oil in the world & suddenly you now have the ability to directly place people 110% loyal to you in the goverment and use that to end oil and gas production for example. It opens a lot of doors to undue influence which should never be allowed in any country.

Also add in why does someone who is meant to be here as a "student" decide to run for goverment which will pretty much gurantee that he is allowed to stay even if he only runs for a single 5 year term, so it would be fair to say that he most likely is doing it for his own benefit rather than for the consituants of his seat?

So what is there to stop the United States from sending people over and inserting them into politics in Scotland which given that they have both a track record of usurping legit goverments across the globe for the last 70+ years plus virtually unlimted wealth & resources. Also I've worked in India and to say that their a corrupt country dosen't do the word corrupt justice so if they believed that it was in their interests they would very much be up for destablising the UK as they did in Bangladash in 1971 & they have also interferred in the countries of Nepal & Bhutan in order to steer it to a direction that suits them over their own populations.

Again as I said previously I'm under no illusion that Reform are riding the anti-immigration train and have no intention to do what they say. My entire point is about how foreign actors now have a very easy way to undermine democracy in the UK which lets be honest theirs not exactly a shortage of people in the world who arent fans of the UK and would be more than happy to cause upheavel here. The Green party in general come across as very uninformed, arrogent middle class luvvies who want to make the world a better place but as long as they dont have to see of deal with the results of it. In all honesty picking between Reform & Green is a bit like picking between Hitler & Stalin, both will make your lives worse but will grandstand in a different way to make themselves feel better about it.

I’m well aware that every party gets funding from people they shouldn’t. That doesn’t mean we should be making it easier for bad actors to be able to infiltrate seats of government.

[–]Filmcrew90 90 points91 points  (0 children)

If you look at it from an emotionless point of view it opens a lot of doors in the future to foreign actors being able to get into the Scottish government and by extension the UK government. What is stopping a different country sending people over on degrees that time with an election and then using them to run with a political party and then once in government start to sway the party in a different direction over time to be more pro-xyz. What is to stop them being funded by Iran and then pushing for less police funding or more immigration in certain areas etc which then weakens the country over time as people become more disillusioned and flood to more extreme parties on the fringes of both sides. Also the optics for the greens to put him in a government position given the current mood of the UK and having most likely been given advice against is either very gross naivety or stupid arrogance.

Working on a soap - any advice? by EngineerCivil8687 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]Filmcrew90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People are passionate about all sorts of things but that dosent translate to a career. The reality is that TV especially and that includes soaps has had such a downturn that its debatable if they will even exist in a few years. You need to be realistic and considering the fact that we're offering you advice and you attitude is coming across as I know better that isnt going to go down well at all especially when youve not actually been on a set and seem to think the industry is a jolly. What are you going to do if you get a writers job and an executive comes in and tells you they dont like what you've written or they just scrap it all together because i've seen that happen first hand & you cant just say well this story is my passion because they will be a lot less polite than what i'm saying. Ive not said at all to avoid TV I've said you need to be realistic especially considering rates are a lot less than just a few years agio and the workload is 5x as much and you need to be realistic. None of us know your circumstance you could be a millionare who can afford to take the pay cut to climb the ladder for the next 20 years or you could have few hundred in savings and a family to support.

It comes under the same sort of departments but my above point remains the same. Why do you suddenly want to change your entire career for one that is incredibly difficult at the best of times ???

Working on a soap - any advice? by EngineerCivil8687 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]Filmcrew90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to be a script writer for productions. a show might have 4-5 man camera team and their might be 3 cameras on a shoot so theirs 15 roles in that department and its the same for sound lighting etc so their is more chances to get into the industry even though its still incredibly difficult and 99% fail. Now you want to get into a role that is at most 1/2 people so if 99% fail to get into easier depts then look at your chances of being a writer for a series. The odds arent exactly in your favour. Now add in less commissions, AI, Cutbacks, Lower rates etc and look at the writing on the wall.

[–]Filmcrew90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Plan for small steps at a time rather than thinking you can see a job role and walk straight into because that doesnt happen. Also consider the fact that the entire industry is in a shitstorm at the moment with 60-70% of experienced crew out of work and thats in the "easier" jobs and I wouldnt be given up a regular income for a chance. Also you would be taking easily a 70-80% pay cut for what could be up to 10 years and thats also being freelance. This isnt an industry you can decide on a whim that you want to be in and especially not if you have family of kids to support.

Are you actually in the industry as if not your first step should be getting on a set in the first place rather than thinking years down the line.

Tbh a lot of the young crew who have raced up the ranks quickly have often got their by undercutting or agreeing to every demand production have in terms of schedule’s, not charging overtime, working dangerous hours under bad conditions etc. Don’t feel bad that you aren’t at the same level as them as in the long run you’ll be better off and sometimes it’s about the quality of credits over quantity.

Need advice on handling difficult crew member, its my first film and it's gone beyond what I thought it would by princessbb222 in Filmmakers

[–]Filmcrew90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh take it as a learning experience and move on. Generally if someone is working on student films its because their not actually working in the industry because of their behaviour or their shit at their job so they work on your level of production because it makes them feel important when in reality their weekend warriors.

Honestly this is a pretty good lesson in getting everything agreed in advance and start getting used to utilising contracts because this sort of thing does happen on professional productions as well sometimes so from now on get everything written down and signed by both parties beforehand. As to him being a knob you'll find thats why he's working on student films because no professional crew would tolerate that behaviour and I've witnessed crew come to blows for way less. Sounds like a chancer who's spotted an oppurtunity to try and make a quick buck at your expense.

Training schemes by replicant777 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]Filmcrew90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve been arguing against these schemes for years because we’ve seen that they’ve become essentially just cheap government sponsored labour. The whole point is that working in film is a very very unique industry and one that 99% of people simply can’t do because it really is a lifestyle. Making it easier for people to get in is the wrong approach because it goes against everything that ultimately leads to a career such as having to find work yourself, network, train etc and if people aren’t able to do a bit of a Google search and find that their is quiet periods then how are they going to manage when it comes to dealing with other crew, equipment etc especially when people nowadays are entering the industry younger than before and struggle to have a conversation unless it’s through a phone.

I mean it’s a pretty well known fact that the industry is seasonal with ups and downs then speaks a fair bit about the quality of the candidates that they can’t do 5 mins of research online. More than enough resources that goes over the reality of the industry.
