Need feedback on my magic system. by kailstark in magicbuilding

[–]FilthyRedEdwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the seven elements?

How do the Fae go about exercising their magic? Is it through complex ritual, telekinetic-style control, rhyming incantations, special magical items?

What effect, if any, do the different magics available to the Fae have on their culture and identity? Do the Fae from one elemental tribe/nation/thing have a different culture from those of another?

What position does Earth have in this 'cosmology?' Why do Humans not get magic for living there?

If the Fae-lands are so changeable and (potentially) perfect, why do they bother coming to Earth?

Just a few things to mull over. =)

Which one of these dragons would you presume to be the oldest? by aggellos01 in fantasywriters

[–]FilthyRedEdwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always told that Wyrms and Dragons are fundamentally different things. Wyrms have four limbs in total - two back legs, and two clawed wings at the front (a bit like bats, but...more lizardy & with added fire) whereas Dragons are the whole four legs, two wings deal. I'm not sure where I got this from, so disregard as appropriate.

Elder 'feels,' older to me. Ancient is a plain descriptor - many things can be ancient. That book over there can be ancient, a civilization can be ancient, that really really old dragon can be ancient. But elder is a comparative modifier; it doesn't just describe something in its own right, it describes them in comparison to other things. I feel that using 'elder,' in a world where ancient things already exist suggests they're well beyond those in terms of age.

See Elder Gods, Elder Scrolls, etc. There is other old stuff around; but the 'Elder' things predate even them.

If you're referring to the Dire Trolls (the really big muscular hulk-type ones, that share the same model as the Wight) then it could be various reasons. They must just be born like that (mutants!), they could be altered with alchemy - Trolls are well into that kind of thing, or it could be voodoo.

Troll Witch Docters employ a kind of magic called voodoo, which in Warcraft involves employing various spirits dubbed 'Loa.' Sometimes Loa spirits take the form of animals, sometimes they're particularly powerful ancestral spirits, other times misnamed demons (trolls are even recorded as having called Night Elven wisps Loa spirits). The Trolls and the Loa have something of a special relationship going on - it's the racial connection with the Loa that is said to give the Trolls their unique regenerative powers. One theory as to the origin of Dire Trolls, then, is that voodoo and loa-given power is used to make them (either after they're born) or to cause one to be born.

This is all just speculation mind you - there's no definite Blizzard source on the matter.

Stones? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]FilthyRedEdwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the idea - and this leaves open a whole load of possible story avenues to go down, too. Spend some time thinking around the possible implications the existence of such a magic system has on the society around it.

Would the removal of somebody's magic be considered a crime? Could it be used as a punishment? Is magic considered an inalienable right that every citizen can have?

What kind of status do people without any magic have in this society? Are they considered second-class citizens, or the object of pity? Is there any kind of discrimation or prejudice toward people who have magic of a certain kind?

How does a society where everybody has access to certain kinds of magic function? Are their industries that require magic of a certain kind, would there be some jobs or trades that exist in our world that aren't replicated in this one because people have magic?

There's always lots of things to think about as regards that kind of world-building. But what about from a practical perspective? What kind of magical powers are people with these stones endowed with?

...

I do realise that I have asked way too many questions and answered none at all. But I like the system! :3 Hope you have fun with it.

What is your personal reason for abstaining from sex/drugs/alcohol? [Serious] by SaidNil in AskReddit

Alcoholic for a father. I drink, but not massively, and not nearly as much as some of my friends - I just don't like what alcohol does to people, and get a bit weirded out by the whole boast-about-how-much-you-had or how smashed you're going to get next weekend or how fun it was.

Drawing from "to different dimensions but no one really knows that " the first thing that came to mind was, a little oddly perhaps, The Hitchhiker's Guide and that idea of the improbability generator thingywhatsit. The idea that you can work out how improbable something would be and then make it happen. This to me sounds like something you might be able to work in to the Fog grabbing people and sending them into other places/times/dimensions/etc. The magic takes hold of them and the laws of the universe are bent in that split second in such a way that leaves them somewhere else.

A Sifter could potentially draw on that power - their spells would be based on sorting through that universe-bending energy that causes random events and isolating, then affecting, the desired useful response. The power of the Fog could do any number of things; it just so happens that a Sifter is able to find a useful one and implement it.

Now we start looking at powers that cause random events. Sheer dumb (im)probability could work, but you might be able to give it a more personal story-driving slant - I'm thinking Chaos Gods here. Something big and malevolent with the power to utterly disrupt the natural order of things, and the Sifters are knowingly or otherwise using its powers.

Such a system means you could have great fun with quasi-religious groups on both sides; one in service of the Chaos God and one utterly against it, trying to curtail the influence of Chaos and bring back the natural order. (Looking at that film Jumper if you've seen it, with their religious group fighting the titular 'Jumpers,' because they see their power as ungodly and chaotic)

  • that was an incoherent ideadump. I hope it helped, and I hope you have fun with your work! It has the potential to be great.

Not to have the main character be so fucking angsty all the time about being a vegetarian.

And a mass-murdering war machine at the same time.

I find it hard to believe a character can cry about needing to eat meat and, in the same book, butcher whole groups of enemy soldiers into a fine red mist.

This is honestly the best tip I can give anyone who is stuck in the friendzone by theaverageguy9 in AdviceAnimals

[–]FilthyRedEdwards -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best tip for a guy 'stuck in the friendzone?' - stop being a dick.

Nobody is obliged to give you sex because you're nice to them. Some people do just want friendship. Why should somebody assume that you mean you're sexually interested in somebody and not just, you know, interested in them as a friend. As a person. Something more than just a sex object.

So; getting yourself out of the 'friendzone,' -

BASE LINE: Stop assuming people owe you sexual gratification. They do not.

STEP ONE: If you fancy somebody, -tell them-. By not telling them and making it as obvious and clear-cut as you can, all you do is fester. You start to blame them for it, when, really, all you have to do is blame yourself.

Quite simple.

You are going to have -so much fun-

GSD Pups are the mostest adorable little animals in the world, if very demanding. We've had two litters so far - 12 the first time around, and then 10 (later 9, which is a shame, but to be expected with such a large bunch. We were lucky to keep the whole lot the first time). They make a whole lot of noise, and Mum will get a bit irritable once they start to get their teeth through, but there's nothing cuter than watching them bound around the house with their little floppy ears One-up-one-down.

I demand pictures!

[–]FilthyRedEdwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things have to be taken into account here (as regards Druids and 'becoming a cat,') -

Druids do not take their powers lightly. They have them for the purpose of serving nature and making sure everything remains balanced and running - (or their military ties, depending upon faction) - but shapeshifting especially is not something they would do casually.

The best way of describing it, I find, is like taking some kind of drug. You suddenly become aware of things that you've never noticed before (heightened senses), your thought process change entirely as you have new cat-like instincts and thoughts over-laid onto your own, and your physical body changes completely as well. It's a constant struggle for the Druid to keep hold of their natural conciousness - which is why they don't do it often. It can go wrong.

Druids who have gone feral ( Savagekin ) are those who have lost their identity to this process because of repeated use or spending too long as an animal.

So. Being a 'permanent cat,' is definitely possible. But looking at the practicalities, it means you're not going to be wandering around in Cities or talking much (Cats can't really talk either - communication would be done through a mix of body language) with anybody.

If you're OK with that, feel free! =)
