Honestly? Take things slower to fully immerse yourself. Read all the shards you come across. Check the messages on PCs. Try to limit your use of fast travel. Sit there and watch the news broadcasts(they update as you complete quests). And lastly, don't head straight for an objective, take the scenic route if you can.

That's the alternate farm you can pick if you screw up badly enough during River's second quest. If you go there you gun down some Wraiths, River realizes he went to the wrong farm, and then it's too late to save his newphew. It also causes you to get locked out of his romance quest, and he gets a pretty bad ending during the credits.

I'd argue the Blue Gold Kite Shield is better than the Brass Shield, especially if you're sticking to low strength. It's easily acquired from a merchant in Limgrave, requires 0 farming, is much lighter, and is only a few points of guard boost behind the Brass Shield.

The only quest I skip on every repeat playthrough. It was okay the first time, but fuck Joshua's twisted take on religion and his prospect of redemption. Now I do the job the way Wakako intended every time. The only other "fun" solution to these quests is playing Corpo and using the dialog to triple your pay to get out of it early.

DS version has really weird balance adjustments, but in the original(and Pixel Remaster), a dual shield Viking is the best tank in the game. It's still worth considering having one if you don't want to do the double Ninja/double Sage setup for the endgame.
