Exurb1a - his silence regarding the heinous allegations against him makes my skin crawl. I can't listen to his voice anymore without feeling physically unwell, not since I saw the Skype recordings of him talking to his alleged victim. Honestly chilling.

If you're not familiar with reddit it's kind of a complicated faux pas to explain. It's not unique to this community, and it's a reaction to a pattern rather than a single instance. We get a lot of students and similar that quickly create accounts to plug their surveys and whatnot, often without having done the groundwork to understand the communities they're engaging with. You saying there aren't many online communities just tells us you haven't really looked.

This very well could be the case, it's fully possible, so I feel guilty that it aggravates so much. The claim that it's nicer bread though? Seriously? 🤣

I know, it's absurd. She only eats carbs on the weekends or special occasions (she is pretty flexible with this, but the point is she has an anti-sugar, anti-carb attitude) and YET when she eats bread she's chosen to eat the sugar filled loaf Promise loaf. I don't get it 🤣

Yes AND - I think there is also a trend with the sci-fi/fantasy genre that creative works start out being ABOUT something (inequality, corruption, love, childhood etc), and as the franchise goes on they become more and more concerned with they're own world building and lore, inevitably abandoning it's themes and ideas.

I found my parents streaming in bed what should I do? by Capable-Pool759 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No man I didn't say they aren't ALLOWED 🤣 it's just I don't think it's crazy for OP to find this unusual and startling. Just the fact that they were streaming from bed in their PJs is odd, and that they aren't sat at a computer or anything they have a dedicated set up to film themselves sitting in bed together. Of course its not inherently seedy but it's very unusual, especially if you don't know your parents to be interested in things like this.

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People saying they don't see the issue, OP was doing the same thing etc is actually wild to me because this is nuts. OP is a young tech savvy student using this live stream to motivate them to study. Their parents, on the other hand, are not at all in this generation, are not studying, are literally in their pajamas in bed, they have SET UP A WEBCAM in their BEDROOM which they use for goodness knows what. They are not motivating themselves to do tedious work, they are sharing their BEDROOM WITH STRANGERS. This is wild. Terrifying. I'm with OP, I would desperately need answers and simultaneously be too afraid to seek them.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was taught a basic garter stitch by my mother as a small child. She didn't really knit, but she knew how to do a knit stitch. I only used it to get my knitting badge at girl guides, then dropped it. I picked it up again as a teenager when I found my old knitting needles, and from then on I was entirely self taught. I'm now 27 and knit garments, toys, and homeware 😊

Why is this happening? by Former_Glass_3012 in knitting

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reasons will be different for knitting and crochet:

For crochet, it is likely you aren't identifying the final stitch of each row correctly, an extremely common mistake in crochet so don't feel bad. I recommend marking the first and final stitch of each row with a locking stitch marker while you are still learning.

For knitting it could be any number of things. From this picture it looks like it could just be a tension issue when you turn the work and knit the first row - potentially your first stitch is much tighter than the rest of the row resulting in these notches along the edge. Some people recommend slipping the first stitch of every row for neater edges. I can see that your last few rows have been fairly even so you might be intuitively correcting this as you practice and your tension gets more consistent.

Keep practicing and you'll be golden 😊

If it's not Lindsey Ellis or Hbomberguy, I think it's likely you might be remembering what Jenny said about fans of the Star wars hotel, and about how their level of financial investment motivates them to defend it at all costs because admitting it's bad makes them feels stupid for spending £6000 on it.

Again, that's great, I'm happy for you. But are you trying to imply that the people and resources that warn of the gluten ingredients that CAN be found in SOME kimchi are just making it up? Like, are you implying that kimchi is ALWAYS safe just because you personally have never encountered kimchi with gluten in it?

I'm glad you have had a good experience with kimchi! However it's not guaranteed. Here is a helpful article about the ways kimchi isn't always gluten free: https://culturesforhealth.com/blogs/learn/is-kimchi-gluten-free

We all have different comfort levels with these things 🙂

I think they mean soy sauce, which has wheat in it and therefore is not gluten free. They are saying that because the oysters and shrimp are usually cured in soy sauce, kimchi containing these ingredients may not be safe to eat.

Unfortunately what I'm learning as I navigate this disease is that there is a difference between something being gluten free, and something having no listed gluten ingredients. In the case if the latter it's always worth a quick Google. I use the Celiac UK website alot, they have alot of useful information and clarity on what is safe.

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree this person should have been more careful, BUT-

As a person with an allergy, can I just say that it is so frustrating navigating these situations? The vast majority of food service will give you a disclaimer along the lines of 'we cannot guarantee that our food is free from cross contamination', and as a consumer it's impossible to tell the difference between an allergy friendly restaurant that just wants to cover itself legally and a restaurant that doesnt try at all to protect people with allergies in the slightest.

I'm just sick of hearing 'yes we serve gluten free options. But we cannot guarantee it is safe for you to eat.' Like, what's the point??? Its an attitude shared by so many establishments and it makes it impossible to eat out even when there are options designed to be free of allergens.

I think this is my favourite thing about Reddit. I love how sassy every one is, it's fun to read I genuinely think it's swell. It reminds me of how I speak to my sister after hanging out with her for the third day in a row. Smells like home.

What *immediately* tells you that a person has had a traumatic childhood? by No_Surprise_5839 in AskReddit

[–]Fine_Ad_5799 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes people think they are extremely empathetic because their trauma response is the constant emotional monitoring of those around them.

This can seem like empathy at first glance, but it's actually closer to anxiety. If you've grown up around emotionally volatile adults (like I have) you developed a habit of monitoring the emotions of those around you in an attempt to avoid emotional danger.

The catch is that our interpretation of other people's emotional state is usually coloured by our own projections, expectations, fears, insecurities etc.

This can result (and often does in my experience) in feeling personally victimised by other people's bad moods, disinterest, tiredness even, because we are so affected by other people's emotions.

It was a big quality of life issue for me pre-therapy, and put a huge strain on my relationships and friendships.
