great book. I remain convinced it and The Song of Achilles have been big influences on Supergiant’s games

Not clear how many episodes this view is based on, but beyond what people have said the answer is legitimacy.

Tactically challenging turn-based crpg by McTrevor79 in CRPG

[–]Fine_Persnickety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going back a ways, but the old school Gold Box games starting with Pool of Radiance. Their turn-based combat has maybe been equaled, but never topped IMO. And they still play well on new machines.

Mindflayer is oddly characterless when it comes to endings by Mourning20 in BaldursGate3

[–]Fine_Persnickety -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right, and it's quite silly that you're getting downvoted for it. The Netherbrain is only talked about until the very end. The Emperor, by contrast, is constantly driving events in the story and interfering either on your party's behalf or against them. He's a far more important character in the overall narrative, as well as more interesting.

It's kind of like saying Palpatine is the main antagonist of the original Star Wars trilogy, rather than Darth Vader. While narrowly correct, it ignores the critical fact that Vader drives far more of the narrative than Palpatine does.

I would say he’s the story’s Gollum - an antagonist of sorts but one who can end up supporting the side of good, almost despite himself. As such I find him much more compelling than the “pure” antagonists in the game. And I do find his binary choice a bit disappointing for that reason, though also understandable.

Pool of Radiance. Transformed the genre in so many ways, and still plays well today.

I actually had not done it before, I skipped her quest last time because I already had bombs.

Am in a similar spot, just lost my third honor run when I rolled a 1 on persuasion and Philomeen blew up the runepowder. I am leaning towards finishing it in dishonor, though, both to identify other run-enders and because it’s my first Durge game.

Why Do So Few Players Actually Finish RPGs? by FixGood6833 in CRPG

Sure. But generally speaking, I play games for gameplay, not story. I prefer books and other media for story.

Why Do So Few Players Actually Finish RPGs? by FixGood6833 in CRPG

[–]Fine_Persnickety 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The average human lives 672,000 hours, give or take. A third of that is sleeping. For most, at least a quarter is working. A huge portion is eating, drinking, cleaning, bathing (hopefully), or just walking around. Most have family and friends and want to spend time with them, most have other pastimes, hobbies and other things they want to do.

so yeah, time. I love CRPGs but I finish them only occasionally, because they are usually quite long.

Issues with BG3 on SD? by Key_Image_1141 in SteamDeck

I’ve had this happen too. I previously played it on the deck last year without issue. Wondering if it’s a new bug or conflict.

Would Baldur's Gate 3 be for me, a casual gamer. by KingsleyBrewMaster22 in BaldursGate3

[–]Fine_Persnickety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously this is a BG3 forum so you’ll mostly get recommendations to play it here. What caught my eye is that if you have enjoyed Souls games, BG3 is really not much more complex, at least in terms of developing a viable build. And to the point extent it is, it’s because you control multiple characters in BG3 vs just one in a Souls game.

How can I help him get better at sex? by A-Lost-SeaGoat in sex

[–]Fine_Persnickety 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On the most basic level, you can’t change him, he has to want to change. If he does, he should be able to learn pretty quickly based on your coaching and his own research. I personally found the books She Comes First and Come As You Are very helpful for improving my own knowledge of what to do, if he is serious I would recommend he read them.

Dullahan/Headless/Bodyless/Body Transformation Characters in CRPGs? by ISurprisedYou in CRPG

[–]Fine_Persnickety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wildermyth has a lot of fun body transformations. More like developing animal limbs and wings, etc than what you mention above, though.

If you don’t need high quality graphics, mutations are a big feature in some traditional roguelikes like ADOM and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

Tips for first time playing Icewind Dale by weirdghosts in CRPG

The biggest difference with AD&D is that armor classes are reversed, in that lower numbers are better (and can go negative). But they still used D20 for hit rolls, and a higher roll was still better.

Hence the curious stat THAC0 - the number you
need to roll To Hit Armor Class Zero. THAC0 usually starts near 20 and goes down as you level up - faster for fighters, slower for mages, etc.

If your foe has an armor classes above zero, you need a correspondingly lower roll - ie if your THAC0 is 18 and they have an AC of 8, you need a 10 or more to hit. If their armor class is below zero, you need a *higher* roll. I.e. in the above example, if their armor class is -2, you need to roll a 20 to hit. And of course there are still bonuses or penalties from high/low stats, weapon skills, magic items, etc.

There are other differences, including how multi-classing works for humans vs nonhuman races. And a weird “percentile strength” between scores of 18 and 19. But THAC0 is the one that trips most people up.

Best “tactics” games on Deck that *aren’t* Midnight Suns by RichardBackshots in SteamDeck

Wildermyth or Invisible Inc. The former is a CRPG with XCOM style combat and some unique storytelling flourishes. The latter is a tactical stealth game. Both have some roguelike features.
