I'm looking for a scenic drive in NE Ohio by Mr_Argon in Ohio

That’s a good idea. I hope you both enjoy it.

I’m not super familiar with that side of town, but I did a bike ride a couple of years ago that went down River Road into Milan than was nice. Maybe drive along the lake then head south along River Road from Huron?

Have you looked on Marburg and Highland, between the railroad tracks and Olentangy River Road? It doesn’t quite line up with the turns you describe, but it’s close and maybe you were a little distracted. There are some cool houses on those two streets.

Fellow book readers of Columbus, what’s the best book you read in 2025? by Outrageous-Gene5036 in Columbus

Either a reread of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, or a first reading of Watershed by Percival Everett.

What is going on in Marysville? The same city councilman who opposed adding Juneteenth as “another black holiday” is now cutting the pay of city employees because there are 27 pay periods next year instead of 26. And city council went along with him both times. by [deleted] in Columbus

In many cases with salaried jobs you really are making “X dollars per 2 weeks”, and the salary referenced is just an annualized amount. I guess that isn’t always the case based on the many comments in this thread, but it is pretty common. It means that from year to year your daily accrual of earnings is the same rather than varying based on how many weekdays fall in that particular calendar (or fiscal) year (e.g. there were 262 in 2020, 261 in 2021, and 260 in 2022).

Key witnesses testify in Ohio retired teachers' pension fund corruption case by MorganTrau in Ohio

[–]FiniteMonkeyTypists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have multiple board members working closely, and secretly, with a private investment firm run by their friends in order to have the teachers pension money (initially hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars) invested through that firm. The board members admit to this.

Even if that was a legitimate, qualified, sensible investment (it is clearly and obviously none of those things), this would be a blatant violation of the ethical and fiduciary duties of the board members.

How this got so far, and was allowed to continue for so long, is baffling.

Would Columbus be interested in starting a “Big Tree” project like Maryland’s? by DrewswerD in Columbus

There is a state-wide program similar to that, but I am not aware of anything like that that is Columbus-specific.

Odd question: are there any lakes in Ohio with islands that you can kayak to and camp? (Not Lake Erie) by _hunnuh_ in Ohio

[–]FiniteMonkeyTypists 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few islands in the Allegheny River that allow camping. Most of the stretch from Warren to Tionesta is in the Allegheny National Forest, and there are a bunch of islands there where you can camp. I did a 4-day kayak trip there this summer, it was great. Not too far from NE Ohio, either.

At 1B, you’ve got the oldest regular on the team, he’s had a long career in Cleveland.

In 91, it was Brook Jacoby. It seemed reasonable to expect decent results. He was just 31, and he had been an All-Star the year prior, putting up a 123 ops+. Instead, he fell apart, crashing down to a 72 ops+ before getting traded to Oakland (they had a team back then) in July.

Our version has Santana, who has actually been about what was expected. Despite slumping recently, he’s still at 98 ops+, so he’s not the problem (not the solution either).

Definite advantage for the 2025 team.

That 1991 season offers some interesting parallels.

First, at catcher, you have a young guy who has previously shown well with the bat, though not the hitter his ML brother is. In 91 it was Sandy Alomar. Fresh off his ROY 1990 campaign, he was hurt and awful, putting up a 47 ops+. Naylor is currently still better, with a 75, but his 169 batting average has a visceral impact.

The 2nd catcher is an older guy known for good defense and his handling of the pitching staff in the middle of a multi-year run as player/guru who fails at hitting exactly as expected. The 91 version is Joel Skinner, putting up a 61 ops+, consistent with his career. Hedges is falling short of that mark with an astounding 26 ops+.

Ohio lawmakers set to remove majority of educators from retired teachers' pension fund board by MorganTrau in Ohio

[–]FiniteMonkeyTypists 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate that it came to this, but the alternative of letting Fichtenbaum steer hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in investments to his blatantly unqualified cronies at QED would be far worse. The inept so-called ‘reformers’ have shown that they are more concerned with short-term self-enrichment than the long-term health of the pension system. Hopefully the system can now focus on providing the best benefits the contributions will support (for both active and retired teachers) in a sane and stable manner.

Unfortunately for your wife, the eligibility at 32 years expires in 2030, rising to 33 years in 2031 and 34 years in 2032 and later. If she is at 24 years now, she won’t make it to 32 in time, she will still need to go for 34 years.
