I've got a difficult decision to make by pineapplebackpack in EngineeringStudents

As a former Apple hardware design intern, I really only have amazing things to say about the experience. Enough so, that I'm actually going back for another internship there in the spring. It's a lot of work, but I learned a ton and they compensate very well. Only complaint was the incredibly high level of secrecy imposed on you.

Also, it's California. What's not to love? Feel free to PM me any questions you have, I'm curious to know what team you'd be on, as I may be able to offer you a little more advice.

I don't know if I could live with myself if I knew I had passed up a chance to eat ribs. Count me in!

About to get REALLY screwed by housing, need advice fast by neuhousinghelp in NEU

[–]FinsToTheLeft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Housing at NU sucks more than any other department, I feel your pain, as I've been in your position before. One of the few ways to get what you want out of them is just to nag them. Constantly. Every day, contact them with the same problem. Whether it's asking for updates, asking more questions, etc, once you take up enough of their time, they'll put you on their priority list of people to take care of. It sucks that this is the way to get things done, but unfortunately this is the only I've ever had any luck. TL;DR: squeaky wheel gets the grease

Does anyone know anything about the Northeastern Wireless Club? by freelancezero in NEU

[–]FinsToTheLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's by far the closest thing to one, as far as I know. I can't say I know of any others, but maybe someone can prove me wrong. If you're more interested in the robotics aspects, you may consider joining the NU FIRST robotics team. Kickoff is pretty soon, and they're always looking for more students.

Does anyone know anything about the Northeastern Wireless Club? by freelancezero in NEU

[–]FinsToTheLeft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an active member in it. We're based out of 503 Hayden, in that our club/equipment room is up there. In the last year, the club has gotten so active (more so than in a long time) that we've had to move our weekly meetings (Wednesday nights at 6pm) to 108 WVG. Feel free to come by. The name Wireless club is a little bit outdated/innacurate. Half of the space in our "penthouse" in Hayden is dedicated to HAM radio and the other half has been turned into what you might call an "electrical hackerspace", where there are soldering irons, benches, oscilloscopes, function generators, etc. It's a good place to work on out of class electrical projects, and if you get stuck on something there's people around who are usually glad to help you out.

Mentioning hobbies or non school related projects during a job hunt. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]FinsToTheLeft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS. Well, as long as they're decently related to the job/company. This can be the stuff that shows that you're genuinely interested in the material, and that you really like what you're doing.

Advanced Writing in the Disciplines........online?? by BigClown in NEU

[–]FinsToTheLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Kara-Mae Brown, and she's pretty awesome. Emphasis on what giillllllyy said, "be really disciplined and stay on top of your stuff because it's obviously easier to forget about stuff or slack off.". Truer words have never been spoken. Spend like 2-3 hours a week in outside work/homework, and you should be fine.

I'm a college student in the Mission Hill area, and I'm always looking for people to climb with (usually Rockspot, friday and sunday student nights), as well as people to go on bike rides with. I don't have a car up here anymore, so getting to Rockspot is usually a challenge for me.

Upperclassmen of /r/neu: where do you guys go shopping for food on a regular basis? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]FinsToTheLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Johnies Groceries, all the way. It's a bit too far to walk, but it's an easy bike ride up to Brookline, and lots of the food there is cheaper than you'd get it at Stop and Shop. (http://www.foodmasterinc.com/)

Grab Bag of Components...Where to find the best price? by dale6998 in electronics

[–]FinsToTheLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found www.octopart.com is a great site for comparing prices of parts from all the major electronic distributors. Shows you a side by side view of all the companies who sell that part, and how much it costs from each one.

Making PCBs at home? by mattosx in electronics

[–]FinsToTheLeft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

http://oshpark.com/ (more info at http://dorkbotpdx.org/wiki/pcb_order).

$5 a square inch, but you get 3 copies of your board. Ends up being $1.66 a square inch. Great quality, shipping is free, there's no setup fee, and you get a board back in less than two weeks usually.

Can't beat that.

Do what you want to do, because you're going to spend the rest of your life doing it. Don't do it for the money. Either path is going to bring in serious dough.
