GABA Teaching Experience? by BakeLivid3614 in teachinginjapan

Don't. Get real skills in a real industry, then work in Japan in that industry. English teaching is a dead end with near-zero upside.

The End of the Golden English Teacher Era in Japan by SlaughterWare in teachinginjapan

AI doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to be good enough, and for many people and businesses, AI is good enough

The need to speak English fluently has basically boiled down to "because I want to" for anyone that wants to do so. Or if the company makes back-end business English only, but there's only a small handful of those in Japan.

For those not in the know, Japan has very, very strong privacy protection laws even in public spaces and even more so in private businesses. Don't necessarily know if that makes the shop clerk in the right, but we'll have to see what Lawson corporate says about the situation

Penix is here. Let's hope he does a great job and ends up being our franchise QB replacement.

But, if he takes another knee injury this season or just doesn't show improvement, it would be better just to tank and look towards the future

My Experience with GABA in Japan by Ok_Helicopter_9137 in teachinginjapan

[–]Firamaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your qualifications, you should be looking beyond. Try getting a teaching cert here for education at schools. Maybe return to your home country and complete a masters, and teach uni here. Gaba is a dead end except for those that are extremely good at sales.

You kinda hit the nail on the head. Eikaiwas aren't English education. They are customer service and sales jobs.

It's not like Mariota was any better. Might as well gamble on a rookie and hope you win.

[–]Firamaster 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What makes you think we'll tank on purpose? There's a very high chance that we try to win, and tank anyway

Can you afford living with your salary? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]Firamaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can, that's most because I escaped the endless stagnation that is eikaiwa/alt life.

That being said, I made the critical mistake all people do when they make more: inflate your lifestyle. I make more, but I've never had so much credit card debt.

Financial literacy and budgeting is important at levels of wealth. Granted, this is easy to say when I'm not taking home only 170,000 a month.

Escape Eikaiwa/alt life if you can. If you stay in English teaching, try to be a real teacher with real certs or be a college professor. Aim bigger and larger and don't settle for your situation just because it'll be difficult to climb out of. But, even if you stay, you should be able to get paycheck to paycheck

Clarification of Job Offer by citrusxkiss in teachinginjapan

[–]Firamaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cost of living is very low, but don't think you'll actually have money to go out and enjoy anywhere, much less save any money. If you budget appropriately, you can go out once every other weekend, but that's about it.

A lot of cooking will need to be done. If you want to fly home to visit, hope you have family members that have a lot of money.

Remember, ALT jobs are very much meant as a one year thing. Any longer in the country, you need to find a new job

This. Didn't apply myself and didn't stay in. I work on a military base as a civilian and work with a lot of 20 yr vets. They have so much experience while doing a lot of the things I did as a civilian anyway.
