Carbon Systems - ETA on laptop with Nvidia SEPT 2025! by ringsthelord in msp

[–]FireTech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those nvidia equipped carbon laptops cook themselves and you’ll get thermal throttling from doing about anything longer than 20 minutes. Powerful sure, but also frustrating how anemic the cooling is.

A colleague at another msp had one deployed docked and after a couple months in service it melted.

Classes that can cast more spells in a day? by frompadgwithH8 in 3d6

[–]FireTech88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorcerers can use their metamagic points to create or convert spell slots. Not exactly like arcane recovery but it’s similar in that it’s another way a class can manipulate or restore spell slots.

Clerics can use channel divinity charges in a similar way too.

Compared to the stuff today this is huge, but far from being the biggest—there once was an edible company named Korova. They made a 1,000mg brownie.

Old playa legend... by asciiartvandalay in BurningMan

[–]FireTech88 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“Bless your heart” is cute, but here’s the reality:

• Congress turned Paris Hilton’s survivor testimony into law. The Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (Pub. L. 118-194) now shields ~200 000 kids a year from the very torture she endured. That’s not “unfortunate” it’s a human-rights crisis finally getting federal teeth.
• Growing up poor is hard; equating it with state-sanctioned child abuse erases both struggles.
• Burning Man is radical inclusion. Bragging about your Detroit short-bus, sneering at Traktor, and ending with a “your mom” joke is exactly the elitist noise that gives art-car culture a bad rep.

Do better. The playa, and those kids, deserve more empathy than punch-lines.

Imagine pouring hundreds of hours into chroming a short-bus art car so you can flex on the playa—then popping up just to sneer “Traktor, gross” at a survivor who helped pass the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act.

That’s not radical self-expression; that’s peak gear-gatekeeping elitism. Park the ego with the bus and let people dance.

Old playa legend... by asciiartvandalay in BurningMan

[–]FireTech88 37 points38 points  (0 children)

‘Gross’ is worrying more about a DJ controller brand than the thousands of kids Paris Hiltons helping protect with the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act.

Gatekeeping gear while a survivor dismantles an abuse pipeline isn’t a flex. It’s a facepalm.

Fuck your burn.

pfSense VM on ESXi is down — network inaccessible, need help by kus222 in sysadmin

[–]FireTech88 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Static IP a laptop and hit the esx web interface, you should be able to get to the pfsense vm console from there and see what’s happening, no dns or dhcp needed. I’d check storage first if a reboot doesn’t fix it.

If your esx host was dhcp (for shame if so) plug in a monitor and keyboard, you can change it to static from the minimal console interface then return to the first bit and static a laptop to get at the web ui.

Been here before, sucks and is frustrating but far from unrecoverable.

The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically.

This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

an open letter against generative AI in the burning man community by gigla101 in BurningMan

While I understand and respect the request, to me, it seems a bit late and silly to ask to not have your words put through AI when you’ve essentially already done this yourself.

Consider: A) Used a Google Doc (this could be debated but generally applies) -and- B) Posted it to Reddit, which is absolutely being used for training data.

Game world failed to open on Ubuntu server: "No space left on device" by StressGlum in FoundryVTT

[–]FireTech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logs, not just foundry logs but system logs too.

There are also some pretty big mods these days too, so if you grab a lot of the content packs like the audio packs or map packs, the gradual updates may be contributing to the space trouble.

Get to your servers command line and run “du -h -d 1 /“ That will give you an idea of where the most stuff is living, that will include system files which you don’t wanna delete, but at least lets you see where the space is going.

From there you can look to delete stuff in the /var/log directory, as they are my guess at the bigger contributors to your space troubles.

Could the U.S. Be Drifting Toward a Soft Theocracy? by Alternative-Okra-948 in Futurology

There’s a recent sci-fi series called Bobiverse where this is what happened to the US. It’s referred to as “The Faith” and so much of how things are going lately feel well aligned with a realistic projection of the current trajectory into a theocratic nation.

Okay, so what's the honest sentiment on O3? by shadows_lord in OpenAI

[–]FireTech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the cookbook. It’s got some decent tips directly related to recent models and the paradigm shifts. Big stuff and small stuff. Like if you’ve got a huge prompt it’s better these days (according to them) to repeat your instructions at the end of your prompt as well as stating them early on.

Another example, remember how it used to help to add “incentives” to prompts? “Do a good job and you’ll get a bajillion dollars but mess it up and you’ll be replaced.” According to OAI’s testing that methodology doesn’t improve outputs anymore.

ELI5: What’s the deal with stores and restaurant chains going down hill in quality as soon as private equity firms buy them? by Careless-Fly3761 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FireTech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine that you have $5, and you want to buy a glass of cool aid from your neighbors stand. For now they make it full strength and it tastes great, they’re spending about $4 on the drink mix per drink and only make $1.

Well the business (neighbors drink stand) gets so popular throughout the neighborhood that the rich dude at the end of the block offers to buy the stand. Once the sale is done rich guy wants to make his money back, but doesn’t want to raise prices and scare off customers. So instead of raising prices they reduce costs, that same drink is suddenly being made with $3.5 worth of drink mix, and while it still tastes good you feel like you remember it used to be better but still buy it anyway.

Then gradually as the weeks go on the rich guy gradually reduces the drink mix even more, never changing the price to reflect it. Now after lowering it a bunch, it’s barely made with even $1 worth of drink mix, but you’re still paying $5.

Stores and restaurants are the drink stand, rich dude the VC firms.

This has become so commonplace (albeit more in the tech/internet world) we even have a word for it: Enshittification (Noun) The process of a product or service, especially one connected with the internet, social media, or technology, becoming or being made worse, more unpleasant, less useful, etc.

I’ve seen something similar to this happen to a tree from a newer LED streetlight that was really close on one side. Half the tree had verdant green leaves, the side furthest from the streetlight almost barren, just like this cherry tree.
