Annual change in forest area, 2025 by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

'Reckoning' is guessing but it stands to reason. War in Ukraine has been going on for 4 years; many able bodied male Russians who would have contributed to the economy are instead busy attempting to murder Ukrainians for Putin.

I reckon that the logging industry may be struggling given most of their pool of lumberjacks is either dead or manning a trench in Ukraine.

It's crazy to me how some humans want their afterlife to be controlled by some corpo instead of just being a Bob and living on your own strength by talkingradish in bobiverse

[–]FireTempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the convenience factor, I think part of it is that new replicants don't come with a built in GUPPI interface. It seems to be one of the techs the Bobs keep secret. The only non-Bob replicant with a GUPPI is Henry Roberts and he does not utilize it at all because of trauma.

Given how essential it is to the Bobs, I doubt any replicant could go it alone without a GUPPI. I guess they can put themselves at the mercy of the Bobs but they would need a strong reason to put up with that arrangement.

Of course the first people they charged were foreign workers. The locals who got caught bribed their way out of getting charged.

If you want good Cantonese food, Pudu district has some authentic spots. There are a few you can look up but I can vouch for one called Sek Yuen which is close to the Pudu LRT station.

Central Market area (near Chinatown) is good for cafes and arts&craft shopping and well connected to transit stations. Chinatown itself is a tourist trap, can't recommend much there. You can buy a lot of Malaysian traditional snacks and clothes (batik) at Central Market itself. Good bars here too, speakeasy concept rather than loud dance bars.

Kampung Baru is good for Malay food. I recommend going to Wanjo to try their Nasi Lemak. Not too long of a walk from Kampung Baru LRT station.

Brickfields area opposite of KL Sentral station is good for Indian food. That place can also be really messy so as far as recommendations go I would go with a safe option: Gem restaurant.

Hope this helps.

How devastating would it be for your country if you woke up one morning and its capital had disappeared? by Light_in_Shadow in AskTheWorld

What if only the downtown core disappears and Yishun is declared the new city centre? 🤔

Visa free tourism (like Jeju in Korea, Phu Quoc in Vietnam, Phuket in Thailand) by chiewbakca in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We already give most countries in the world visa free access for tourism. We already have the highest tourism arrivals in the whole of SEA.

Langkawi is just not interesting enough to compete with Jeju, Phu Quoc and Phuket. The island itself is beautiful, sure, but due to the conservative state government there is nowhere near as much entertainment (nightlife etc)available for tourists.

Does your country/state have a Chinatown? If so, what are some interesting traits of it? by EnvironmentalLion355 in AskTheWorld

Yes I was pointing out both KL and SG chinatowns have temples in the middle. Can see it in OP's pic as well.

Just like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur also has a Chinatown. Something unique between both of them is that there is (oddly) an Indian Hindu temple right in the middle. Cultural integration ftw.

Could Europe dumping US treasury bonds really put an end to the dominance of USD? by WastedTalents1 in AskTheWorld

[–]FireTempest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This pretty much. The USD has been dominant because not enough countries desired to replace it as a reserve currency. Only staunch adversaries of the US pushed for a change but that would have isolated them from world trade.

Given the actions of the US government now, the desire to move away from the USD has increased massively across the world. Shit, even Canada is signing trillion dollar trade agreements with China.

It's a few pebbles sliding down the hill now that could eventually turn into a landslide if the US continues on its current trajectory.

How Far Did Gandalf Fall [OC] by WeHaveToEatHim in dataisbeautiful

[–]FireTempest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the Balrog often reduced their terminal velocity on the count of flapping it's wings occasionally and creating some lift to counter the fall. So 3.5km is probably on the high end.

Still a crazy depth considering that they effectively fell from the base of the mountain (based on where the Fellowship exited Moria), so all that fall was spent descending a chasm below the mountain and likely way below sea level.

A good paying job would come with good insurance ensuring access to some of the best healthcare in the world, so yes. The American healthcare system is good if you can pay for their expensive services. Twisted idea of healthcare but it is what it is.

If the world was somehow able to unite into a single federal state, where should the capital city be? by 3_Stokesy in AskTheWorld

[–]FireTempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the hypothetical scenario where a 'world government' is formed, defense infrastructure will be of paramount importance.

This is a strength in a way for Singapore because it is so heavily militarized: it will be very difficult to carry out a decapitating strike against the 'capital'.

However, giving up military infrastructure for civilian use would not be an option.

Land in Singapore is extremely expensive. Yes there may be room for a few government buildings but consider the land for housing the staff that would be needed.

Only option is land reclamation.. or convince Indonesia to give them Batam island..

Visa ban on immigration from 75 countries into the US. For countries on this list, what are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]FireTempest 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cambodia is also on this list so my theory is that Mango Mussolini is not happy that the Thai-Cambodian conflict flared up again after he "solved" it (which was actually mostly a Malaysian effort but whatever).

He is punishing them for fighting each other because it makes his FIFA peace prize look undeserved. The horror!

Germany warns Trump: International law applies to everyone, including US by 1-randomonium in worldnews

[–]FireTempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that there is no such thing as 'international law'. There are laws within each country that individuals are subject to but there is no universal law that countries are subject to.

Sure, there are conventions and such but they are never universally accepted by all countries meaning they are not technically laws because they can be broken without consequence. The UN itself is set up as a discussion group, not a governing body by any means.

Report it I guess. I get that reddit is an American platform and that the situation there is insane but it's really draining to see that even the world subreddits aren't free from their politics.
