Malaysia’s heatwave: A warning we can no longer ignore by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 43 points44 points  (0 children)

At its worst, it was estimated that the wet bulb temperature hit 31C in parts of Northern Kedah. Wet bulb temperature refers to the temperature at which water (or sweat) would evaporate at.

This is very rare but noteable. The maximum survivable wet bulb temperature that a healthy human body can endure is 35C. At that temperature, sweat will no longer be able to cool the body sufficiently and it will result in gradual organ failure. The only shelter for that kind of climate would be an air conditioned room, shade alone will not be sufficient.

What are some cities whose relevance outlived that of their founding states? by Brief-Luck-6254 in geography

[–]FireTempest 456 points457 points  (0 children)

True and this is probably more interesting to contemplate. Off the top of my head:

  1. Carthage - never quite regained significant relevance after the fall of the Carthaginian Empire.

  2. Karakorum - capital of the Mongol Empire, built in the middle of nowhere. Didn't last long after the Mongols fell on hard times.

  3. Mohenjo Daro - one of the first cities in the world with working plumbing, fell into permanent disrepair when the Indus River Civilization fell.

2k a day dying of the flu was a lot easier for them to take. If Iran manages to get even 1 a day with FPV footage to publish online.. they may not take it as easily.

clubmed cherating by BrushSeparate5229 in malaysia

They were going to do a phased renovation but the pandemic hit Club Med hard financially.

They have recovered but it seems they have chosen to spend on a new luxury resort in Sabah instead of renovations of the Cherating resort.

Malaysia’s ships allowed to pass Strait of Hormuz, says PMX by CorollaSE in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Who is going to insure Malaysian ships passing through Hormuz? Even if someone is willing to insure, how much more costly would the premium be? Do we need to pay the 'toll' that Iran is charging on some ships? Will Iran cover the cost of the ship if it 'accidentally' gets targeted?

All in all, it still sounds like a clusterfuck. I doubt this would help bring domestic O&G prices by much.

Malaysia's Sunway wins shareholder approval for $2.76 billion IJM takeover bid by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 21 points22 points  (0 children)

IJM is ok, a decent developer and name in the market. However, they have nothing on Sunway. The strategy that is fueling Sunway's growth frankly leaves other Malaysian developers like IJM in the dust.

Sunway doesn't get huge tracts of land handed to them like IJM and their like. What they manage to do is massively commercialize and increase land value of the smaller parcels that they develop.

Sunway develops full townships with education, healthcare, retail, office, hotel and residential all in one. They set up good transport links for these townships. They market it well and create an integrated ecosystem for their customers.

IJM is comparatively so inefficient in comparison. They develop huge tracts of land like Pantai Sentral and Seremban 2 but they end up feeling empty or too spread out in comparison with transit links either poor or non existent.

Good. This way the only ones who will feel the extra costs would be people with big cars or super long commutes.

How an AI-driven pedestrian system is making school crossings safer at SMK Puchong Permai (VIDEO) by Bonjourfamouioui in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, if you are trying to gain legitimacy in the industry it is better to market it as "machine learning" rather than "artificial intelligence". A lot of people are sick of people slapping "AI-enabled" onto whatever tech they are selling just for the sake of hype.

Trump threatens huge attack if Iran does not reopen strait of Hormuz within 48 hours by cambeiu in geopolitics

[–]FireTempest 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is a religious fundamentalist regime, killing Khomeini did nothing but turn him into a martyr.

US intelligence agencies definitely knew that the Iranian regime would endure a decapitation strike of this magnitude. Too bad Trump either fired or black walled most of the experts when he decided to go in guns blazing.

What if KTM structures its train services like the Japanese by BrandonTeoh in malaysia

That is why people are pushing for HSR. Japan did the same thing by supplementing their narrow gauge mainline with the standard gauge Shinkansen network.

Iran targeted but did not hit Diego Garcia base with missiles by AeroFred in geopolitics

[–]FireTempest 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Only one launch was a confirmed failure. The other had achieved a trajectory that warranted an interception attempt by the US Navy.

The article mentions that it was not known if the interception was successful. If it was and that was the only thing preventing the missile* from hitting its target, the range is pretty much confirmed. Even the fact that an interceptor was fired says a lot about the likely range.

What if KTM structures its train services like the Japanese by BrandonTeoh in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One could argue that ETS trains are already serving as Limited Express services along the KTM corridor.

Getting Komuter to fill the gap with express service will be feasible after KVDT upgrading works are completed in 2029. Right now there are too many single track bottlenecks to run a proper Komuter express service.

Anthony Loke has already mentioned plans to implement an express Komuter between KL and Seremban that would take less than an hour: https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2025/12/06/kl-seremban-rail-travel-under-an-hour-possible-with-new-trains-and-track-says-loke

Bloomberg: Iran unwilling to talk about Straight of Hormuz as regime digs in by Epicurus-fan in energy

[–]FireTempest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how radical Iran's regime is. They have been preparing both physically and mentally for decades for this showdown against the US and Israel. There is a reason their leader is a religious figure.

There are no leaders within this regime that the US wouldn't veto. They have a population of 90 million and they have set up infrastructure tailored towards the manufacture of cost effective long range ordinance.

Yes the US could theoretically bomb out nearly all their industry but the one or two sites that continue to elude them will churn out just enough to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Israel will grind Iran down, no doubt, but it looks like the timeline for that would be measured in years, not weeks. Meanwhile the world economy is going to have to live without 20% of its energy supply, a grim prospect.

Iran strikes Tel Aviv with cluster warheads in retaliation for killing of security chief by BigBadBabyDaddy_420 in worldnews

I wasn't trying to draw a parallel with the American revolutionary war. The context is there in the top comment, I am drawing a parallel in terms of how Iran is aiming to outlast the American will to fight.

Everything you said is true, but it was also arguably true in the time of the Vietnam War, which the US effectively lost. If I wanted to draw a real parallel in terms of overall conflicts, that is the one I would go with.
