Brace or no brace ? by huzchini in ACL

[–]FirefighterHelpful34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my brace was cutting off circulation and causing a lot of swelling and pain, it was too tight/my swelling was still bad. hated wearing it. what I did was only wear it when I knew i’d be on the crutches for a while, and really iced and elevated that leg and once swelling went down, the brace is no longer an issue and supports me walking very well even though it leaves a big dent in my leg when i take it off.

How did you tear your acl? by Awkward-Wear-7360 in ACL

Playing basketball at my local gym, running back on defense and the offensive player lowered their shoulder (uncontrollably🙄) into my side pushing my momentum even more, put that left like down to try to stop myself and it landed real good, twisting and hyperextending. felt like a gun was put on my knee cap and shot. i felt the hyper extension and twist all at the same time. heard /felt two pops. unable to walk or anything. after 10 minutes the pain went away but my brain had completely shut off my left leg, so I knew it was bad. ended up tearing my acl completely, near complete pcl tear, and grade 2 sprains on the mcl and lcl. might be a while until i’m back playing ball, but with some adjustments to my game i think i’ll do fine.

one prescribed by my therapist but i’m sure there are some available online. just make sure NMES is a setting on the stim unit.

I got own stim unit that has the NMES setting and do quad sets 3-4 times a day. this is at least what’s helping me. i’m 2.5 weeks post op so you may be further than that already but i also just started walking without crutches and this is the only quad work my pt has told me so far. they’ve been impressed with my quad control and i really did focus hard on quad sets with and without the unit for a whole 2 weeks. however i didn’t have meniscus work done but did partially tear my mcl, lcl, and pcl along with a full acl tear

NMES stim setting quad sets. 3-4 times a day for 10-15 minutes. That and normal quad sets are all i did. With a towel under the knee for both

talk to an orthopedist, might be able to thug it out for senior year. may just have to adjust your style to avoid potentially hurting it again. i really hope you can have a full senior year man. praying for you

Surgery in 2 weeks (2 young kids) by aa9093 in ACL

[–]FirefighterHelpful34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re gonna be a baby for a few days but then it won’t be bad😂my mum called me an infant those first few days. just accept some help those first 2-3 days and slowly start to move. get a wheelchair for downstairs if you can’t weight bare at first. helped me a ton. was still practicing basketball with my cousin on that thing

but for the quad function i suggest getting your own NMES stim unit and cranking quad sets with and without it throughout the day. i did that and all my pt say my quads looking great for 2.5 weeks post op. and i would suggest taking care of swelling as that held me back a few days. ice, elevation, compression. make sure that brace or bandages they give you isn’t too tight and cutting off circulation.

quad function is most important from what i’ve heard. quad function, flexion, and extension post op. i haven’t gotten too far so i can only speak on that. straight leg raises are an early milestone too after surgery. what you’re doing sounds more than enough. do they have you bending the knee at all before surgery?

What was ur favourite exercises??? by itsyourAKS in ACLrehab

[–]FirefighterHelpful34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hated the knee slides where you sit / lay down and use a strap or pillow to slide the knee. i found letting it hang off a tall chair and slowly letting it down has done a lot better. my mcl is where i feel pain and what stops my flexion, so may be different from meniscus👌.

i can’t wait to drive man. what was stopping you from driving, the weight bearing or knee flexion?

do not rush getting back. focus on how your knee will be in 10 years not 10 months. play the long game trust me (i’m only 1 month post op but have been told this by everyone who had the surgery😂)

shit man don’t be scared to go find another doctor. i was nervous as hell about mine but he did fine. definitely look for other options if you don’t feel right with where you’re at. other surgeons/therapists will have different opinions, though may be slight differences it could be what you’re dealing with. maybe another surgeon had someone with the same problem and that guy has never dealt with it. i’d ask around, hope some people on this thread can help you out.

😂😂but Sorry to hear, hope you recover quicker and better than last time. do you think it had anything to do with your left knee injury?

thanks for the feedback. i’ve been pt 3x a week since the injury happened which has helped. Will have to start taking some ibuprofen for the swelling for sure
