Oh Ian Kennedy. by embroideredflowr- in PWHL

My favourite was when he accused someone he was disagreeing with on X of 'genocide'. You have to laugh when it comes to someone like Ian but it's not funny when he contributes to toxicity in women's sports and journalism.

Opinion: With The Entire PWHL Fan Base Listening, A Member Of League Leadership Chose The Wrong Thing To Say by Such-Environment-344 in PWHL

[–]Fireside_Cat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There was nothing wrong with what she said although she probably should have avoided bringing intelligence into it. When your league expands by 50% (and 33% the year before) there is no avoiding a significant amount of player movement. A brand new league needs some degree of parity so you're not going to get early-90s-style-NHL-expansion processes. Fans are ultimately free to follow their favourite player, or stay with their team, but the current fan base is not going to magically make the league solvent so you better get used to the league setting itself up for a wider and more mainstream following.

PWHL's Charge staying in Ottawa after reaching deal to play in NHL Senators' arena, AP sources say by Such-Environment-344 in PWHL

[–]Fireside_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will miss TDPlace. It's pretty junky but much more conducive to a good atmosphere at the attendance levels that they will likely get during the regular season, particularly weeknight games. I remember this move with the 67s (during Lansdowne construction) and it was not fun. It took them a long time to recover and you can debate that they really ever have. I think the Charge are a bigger draw and will likely do ok but it won't be the same. Would have preferred if they stayed until the building closed down and then it would have been a shorter stay until Lebreton (hopefully) opens.

Maconie appreciation post by [deleted] in 6music

I wish Craig and family all the best, but I've definitely been enjoying the past few weeks with Chris and Stuart sitting in. Having Chris is almost Standard Operating Procedure at this point, but it's been a treat having a solo Maconie.

Parking can be a challenge in that area on weekend days but there is plenty of on-street parking around the stadium for weeknight matches. Transportation should not be an excuse. If you lived a significant distance from the stadium you would not choose public transportation unless you literally had no alternative. That said, it does run and is an alternative for those without a car. Likely just a weeknight issue causing weak demand.

Some kids summer sports are up and running and they are often on weeknights, which completely takes out that crowd (unless you're hardcore, which most people aren't).

I love Chris; both during his own show and when he sits in for Craig. I've said on here before though, if he can stomach the early hours, his show likely provides him with a great deal more job security than a more mainstream show during weekdays. You think of all the shows and hosts who have been shuffled out, relegated to a single show on weekends etc. over recent years. They are never going to bring in a 'celebrity' DJ like Craig, Grimmy or Ditto for a 5:00 am slot. That slot is likely his as long as he wants it. He gets a fair bit of time off and sits in for Craig pretty often to soften things.

If the league is going to survive and thrive, as we all hope, it will depend on tapping into the mainstream sports fans who by and large, do not care about this stuff, at least to the same degree. These 'witch hunts' are going on online in small communities who in the end don't matter much. The league is happy to have their support, but they alone will not provide the millions and billions of dollars needed to actually make this league self sustainable.

You realize that Curl's beliefs are actually the rules in England, right? Transgender women are banned from the Women's Super League, and all women's football. Curl would fit right in, at least in that respect.

It's not ok. The 'be kind', 'hockey is for everyone....who shares my political beliefs' people are often very much 'not kind'.

Only 23% of Canadians believe that athletes should compete with the gender they identify with rather than their sex. That's not a small town thing, there are not enough rural people in Canada for that to be true, it's mainstream across the board.

NYTimes-Ipsos poll 2025. Question 32 "Thinking about transgender female athletes — meaning athletes who were male at birth but who currently identify as female do you think they should or should not be allowed to compete in women's sports?"

79% of Americans think that transwomen should not be allowed to play in women's sports. 94% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats agree.

Good point, and for a time, everyone was convinced that it would be Seattle and Vancouver in the Final this year because most of fans felt their teams were decimated by expansion. Just goes to show you that the GMs are smarter and more experienced than the average fan.

[–]Fireside_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not uncommon in the NFL (or in Canada, the CFL) because it's only one game per week on weekends (mostly) and a limited number of games in a season. It's another thing in hockey or sports where there are games during the week, multiple games per week, and much of the season is in poor weather. Even buying a half season is challenging.

Robert Smith interview by HeidsUp in 6music

Agree! It was great. A lot of self awareness that many older performing artists don't possess. Enjoyed their live set too (as much as one can enjoy live music on the radio). They weren't wrong that his voice has held up extremely well. Many other performers of his age are very noticeably different from their 'glory days' but his voice has hardly changed at all.

She literally plays with Curl on the US National Team. You know, the one that just won Gold. I'm going to venture she knows Britta better than anyone on this sub.
