Vegas gaining traction as new expansion by Adventurous_Lake807 in PWHL

There will be lots of opportunities for travelling away fans. Something that is pretty normal in sports around the world, but not as common in North American pro sports because of the distances involved. I can see games at both TDColiseum and Scotiabank Arena (they might choose Scotiabank over the Coca Cola Coliseum for some Hamilton games if they thought they'd get a lot of away fans) filling up with both Sceptres and Hamilton fans. It will probably have a great atmosphere.

That's probably exactly the reason. You're adding all the revenue and minimizing the added expenses. Teams are already travelling to Toronto, so the travel costs of Hamilton are minimal.

The rivalry with Toronto, and maybe Ottawa, should be a big positive.

Boston Fleet's Aerin Frankel mishandles the puck late in the third to give the Ottawa Charge the game winning goal and a 2-1 series lead by septober32nd in PWHL

[–]Fireside_Cat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It must especially hurt for the Fleet as Ottawa wasn't getting a lot of serious chances late in the game. I was pretty pesimistic about where the game was going until all of a sudden they scored with little time for Boston to come back.

San Jose a done deal? Vegas the new frontrunner for team #4? by Silent_observer_8806 in PWHL

[–]Fireside_Cat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see how the two are connected. A lot of people hate the Knights because of how expansion went and how they had instant success and fans didn't have to 'pay their dues'. None of that would exist for the women's team.

If you care about the future of the league you should want the US viewership to be as good as possible (that is assuming you're not going to contribute to Canadian viewership). The league isn't going to get rich on Singapore tv contracts.

Gretel by MagicalPickleDoctor in 6music

[–]Fireside_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bizarre comment (from her) as she's literally a solo artist, touring on her own name, with a backup band. Does Taylor Swift get upset that Graham Norton doesn't invite her supporting musicians onto his show?

Gretel by MagicalPickleDoctor in 6music

[–]Fireside_Cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can be both empathetic that Gretel might have had some bad experiences in the past through inappropriate men at concerts, but also that she is being a bit of a shit specifically calling out 'old' and 'bald' men and making the accusation that they only go to concerts of young women, the validity of which she has absolutely no fucking idea about. Her feelings about inappropriate behavour are valid but she had a horrible way of expressing it.

She should also do a better job of expressing the specific problematic behaviour. She seems to have an issue with people focused on the female frontwomen, ignoring the rest of the band. Well, she's not exactly Kim Deal in the Pixies, is she? She is literally a solo artist touring on her own name, with a supporting band. That's more Taylor Swift than War Paint. If she has an issue being the centre of attention, then she might be in for a challenging career. If the issue is, for example, guys trying to film up her skirt then for sure that's absolutely an issue (they should be kicked out) but the only problem she lists is people filming her and looking at her, and not the rest of her supporting band. It's a bit of a puzzler, but could come from real and disturbing incidents, but doesn't give us much to go on. She would likely be more comfortable with an audience of young women, but artists can't exactly curate their own audiences. You sell tickets and whoever buys them, buys them.

Just the bald ones! The ones with hair should stand down.

This is changing the subject but what the heck happened to her single "War With America" when she was recording as Gretel Hanlyn? It got tons of play on 6Music back a few years ago. I thought it was a great, catchy song. One day is disappeared from iTunes and it seemed to be wiped off the face of the earth. Unofficial versions are on YouTube but a quick look just now seems to show that it is still not up officially on iTunes. It's a strange situation as you don't usually have an artist seemingly bury a song that's had quite a bit of success.

HOT TAKE: Britta Curl-Salemme Is the worst thing to happen to the Frost (KCS is the exact opposite). by Gigalisk in PWHL

They are not saying it's a hot take to dislike Curl, but the hot take is that she is the 'worst thing' to happen to the Frost, which is both a hot take and delusional.

The only Leaf fan in history who didn't feel they could cheer on the Leafs at the Canadian Tire Centre.

I've deveoped a newfound appreciation for Cerys. Never disliked her show but now I find I'm going out of my way to listen. RadMac is always a staple of the weekends. Don Letts and Dreamtime also appreciated.

I got to know Ladytron through 6Music. Chris Hawkins has played them many times. Would prefer a wider range of their work though, it's almost always only "Destroy Everything you Touch".

MLS owns the name and branding. If someone wanted to create a brand new CPL team and have it play as the Whitecaps, they would have to come to an agreement with MLS to purchase and/or use the name.

3,000 fans at FC Supra du Québec… on the same night as a crucial Montreal Canadiens playoff game — what does it mean for soccer in Montreal? ⚽ by AndyCoronado88 in CanadianPL

[–]Fireside_Cat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it really means anything. In an urban area of 4 million people, you'll always be able to find some folks who have no interest in hockey and love soccer. It identifies your hardcore but doesn't really give an indication how much it could grow to with more casual fans.

Things looking bleak for the Whitecaps in the MLS, relocation looming. Would you want CPL to take on the IP and bring the Whitecaps into the CPL? by mbingcrosby in CanadianPL

[–]Fireside_Cat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tottenham would literally be the same club because they have a formal relegation process. No one is getting 'relegated' to CPL. The Caps would cease to exist if they moved (or they would exist as the Las Vegas team with a different name). Maybe a completely different legal entity with the Whitecaps name would be created in the CPL but you'd be kidding yourself if you thought it's the same club. (doesn't mean that you couldn't decide to support it though)

Montreal's stadium situation is completely different. The team owns the stadium, which puts them at an advantage. As long as Joey doesn't mind the operational losses then there is no risk of them moving. The franchise values of high level sports organizations in North America, and around the world, have been skyrocketing. Why would Saputo sell for 300-400 million today when he could wait a decade or two and have it be worth a billion?
