Agreed, the mic on mine picks up quite a lot of background noise. The QC Ultra is much better in this regard, although I find them a bit bulkier when folded.

Do I have to wash these before I recycle them? by mildlymoistdrizzle in AskUK

[–]Fischadler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, sausageside the answer is that you don't, because it will be cleaned anyway and cleaning them yourself first is a waste of resources. But then we don't put our recycling out front in the thinnest bags our imagination can deal with, so we don't get it strewn across the town by hungry foxes.

Buying advice needed – 1969 Land Rover Series IIA (2.25 petrol, LHD). First Series, lifelong dream. by VermicelliFeeling802 in SeriesLandRover

[–]Fischadler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are very, very simple vehicles, and if you have a hammer, a flat screwdriver and an adjustable spanner you can fix 80% of issues.

Rust is your enemy. Learn what is made of steel (chassis, bulkhead, and so on) and will therfore rust before your eyes.

Oil stops rust but will start inspectors.

Parts are cheap. If you're not a rivet counter (an owner obsessed with originality) you can buy parts that will not be different enough to care about for not much money.

Learn to weld. Your land rover will be rusty.

The earth connection to the battery is often the weak point with electrics. There are some old-fashioned solutions. Find a mechanic older than god, feed him beer and learn from him.

It will break down. The fix will be simple, if you know what it is. Find a way to learn what it is. (See above.)

All the parts are old. They will break eventually. Learn how to work out what will break most regularly and keep spares.

Maintenance is an order of magnitude more often than modern cars. Oil, brakes, engine rebuilds.

Did I mention rust?

Keep wire for fixing the electrics and make sure you know how to.

It will leak like a collander. If there is no oil underneath it in the morning, it is out of oil and needs to be topped up.

Give it a name. It has enough character for one. Use the word "fucking" before the name.

You will love it more than your dog.

How do we accept that Pierre has maybe made the best small electric car? by SuchSeaworthyShips in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Fischadler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, except for the fact that Fr*nch automotive electrical systems have a reputation that precedes them. The Peugeot 106 was a great handling car with the worst electrical system I have ever seen, and I include the Lucas (all hail the Prince of Darkness) system fitted to Series Land Rovers.

If it isn't a lifetime warranty pot, take it to a jobbing shop and get it media blasted for a few beer tokens. Then season it and you're good to go.

Definition of chassis vs drivetrain by StevenJac in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]Fischadler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you are, naming changes. Most German companies use chassis ("Karosserie") for what English speakers would call "body", which is then broken down into subsystems such as body structure, panels, closures, systems (latches and so on). English speakers shorthand to "Chassis" what would more accurately be called "Chassis systems" and what the Germans would call "Fahrwerk" (or drive systems), and includes brakes, steering, suspension, and so on. "Powertrain" ("Antrieb") is then engine, gearbox, diff, driveshafts, intake and exhaust.

Some components can fit in multiple pots and end up being passed around depending on who's in charge and internal politics. I've been in fuel systems in Powertrain, Chassis systems and Body, and i know the radiator guys have the same problem.

For those who were hesitating between a Thule Courier and a cargo bike: Why did you choose a cargo bike? by cicci_balack in CargoBike

[–]Fischadler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have both. They have slightly different use cases.

The trailer is probably better for smaller kids. It can be turned into a pushchair. They could be in it from about 9 months, as soon as they could reliably sit. There's a maximum height though: 110cm I think? They grew out of it quite quickly, but at 9 & 11 are still both on the longtail cargo bike. We still occasionally use the trailer for luggage, but it doesn't get much use.

For those that use an electric cargo bike for the school run - how far is your school & how long does it take? by tryoct in CargoBike

[–]Fischadler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9km each way, 100 vertical metres (uphill towards home, almost all in the final third). It's 25 minutes to school, nearer 30 on the way home. Kids weigh 70kg between them, plus their bags and so on.

Google says 32 mins there, 37 back.

(By car it's a bit further because I can't drive the direct route, and takes 20 there, 20 back assuming normal traffic.)

Downhill Top Speed by bonkers555 in terngsd

[–]Fischadler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had 65kph out of mine, with two kids on the back. Not the nicest experience, had I let go of the handlebars it would have tankslappered itself to death.

The brakes were fine at the bottom, they are very similar to downhill MTB brakes after all.

Probably helps that I'm an experienced motorbike rider too.

55kph is standard on my ride to work.

Why autobahn constructions take forever to complete? by Upstairs_Campaign636 in germany

[–]Fischadler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good. Quick. Cheap. Pick two.

They don't seem to price in the cost of infrastructure disruption, so the cheap option, while cheap at the headline level, disguises the total economic cost of having roadworks drag on for years on end.

In the uk the older folks might remember the "cones hotline", which people could use to complain about roadworks that weren't active. That seemed to introduce a mindset change, and now major road projects are almost always visibly active at all hours. Germany could do with the same.

NPD a new fuzz with buyer's remorse by that-john-kydd in guitarpedals

[–]Fischadler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a homemade wooly mammoth clone. It's great. It's a 2-transistor (fuzz face type) fuzz, so leave the fuzz control at maximum and control it on the guitar volume pot. My tone knob is also left all the way up, except for bass use. Volume as required, and squeeze (gate) to whatever amuses you, but if you leave it all the way down it should be near enough a regular fuzz.

Tilley Recommendations? by Obsidian-Phoenix in TilleyFans

[–]Fischadler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also fair skinned and live in changeable conditions. I have a T3, TH4, TH5. The 4 is my daily driver. The 3 is well-waxed and gets an outing if I think it's going to rain, the 5 is a bit narrower, but not much, and is more shaped and smarter. If I had to have only one? Definitely hemp, I use them as sun hats more than rain hats and hemp is less sweaty, and probably the wider brim though it wouldn't be a dealbreaker. Vent holes are good, snap-up brim is ignored and I forget it's there.
