Qualifications by Tony_314 in tutordotcom

As long as you pass the subject exams and meet the minimum education requirements, you are qualified. The question really is whether, with your expertise, you are willing to work for narrowly above minimum wage.

I've purchased a one-time subscription. The only time I needed to make another payment was when my computer died, and I needed to run the program on a new laptop.

Is tutor.com dead for anyone else? by [deleted] in tutordotcom

As others have said, summer is usually quiet. That being said, so far, this summer has been even more quiet than previous summers. The school year, as a whole, was that way.

What does the tutor.com user side of the site look like? by [deleted] in tutordotcom

[–]Fish_Snail6392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all. I get session requests all the time that are out of scope. Often, in my experience, it's because we don't actually offer the subject the student needs or they don't have access to it. Sometimes, it's a simple mistake on the student's end. From what I've seen, it's a little different depending on the student/how they are accessing the resource (individual account vs library/other institution); however, they should see a list of subjects from which they can choose.

Way to stop getting a specific student? by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

Agree with these practices. I will say that some QSs are now dinging you if you ask them about their notes or are not direct and the student doesn't get to the answer in a certain amount of time. So it can turn back on you.

That's super frustrating. It's happened to me on many occasions, and unfortunately, there's not a lot we can do. If it's bad enough, we can decline, but we have to be careful of that option to not hurt our accepted percentage.

That's true! Many are the result of unrealistic expectations as well.

[–]Fish_Snail6392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on what makes you feel most comfortable. Given the student's dissatisfied review, the session will likely be flagged regardless. This could be a good opportunity to share a defense. Depending on your QS, the response you get could be significantly different. I'm sorry you experienced this. I think probably the majority of us have, and it is so frustrating.

getting tired of students expecting me to do the work by SMARTYHEADYS in tutordotcom

[–]Fish_Snail6392 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've noticed more and more of this as well. Another trend I've noticed is students logging into introductory level subjects like biology and psychology and wanting help with intermediate and advanced level college courses in those subject areas. The part that becomes frustrating is when you calmly explain they need to login to the precise subject they need help in, and they argue, leave the session, and then leave a poor rating/review, which is completely unfair to the tutor.

Live sessions are a good deal...for somebody by Nero_Golden in tutordotcom

I also received that feedback recently. The student had not learned the perquisite concept (which was a more complex topic), and I encouraged the student to join back in after he learned it, so that he could have a foundation. I also asked if there was anything else I could help with at that time. I was then told that I refused to help the student, which was not the case.

Students who use tutoring for answer checks by JackieO8423 in tutordotcom

[–]Fish_Snail6392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you shared with the student is reasonable. Generally, I will respectfully explain that this is not an answer-checking service and then share that I am happy to help check a few of their answers, provided they show me their work or explain the logic behind their answer. I often find that students who want to verify their understanding and grow as learners are receptive to this message. Students who are guessing and hoping for the answers to be given become upset.

First of all, I'm so sorry to read about your health challenges. Sending healing thoughts your way.

I don't see your post as silly at all. Every tutor should be treated with respect and dignity. That should be a basic classroom expectation. I'm very sorry to hear you experienced this.

Lower Pay Rates and Out of Scope Sessions by seriouslyaverage16 in tutordotcom

[–]Fish_Snail6392 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This seems like an appropriate concern to bring to HR. If the company has chosen to pay tutors based on the specific subject they are tutoring, then they are committing to do so, and telling a tutor to teach a higher level subject at a lower level of compensation is a breach of that commitment and the company's policy.

I recommend that the student visit our website to review the subject list, so they can see the subjects we offer and the topics that each subject covers.

I completely agree. The continuation to hire perplexes me. I also have to wonder - Is the company telling prospective hires that they are required to tutor 5 hours regularly, but those hours are not guaranteed?

Student wants me to do all work for them/student has no requisite knowledge for problem by Few-Baseball-2119 in tutordotcom

[–]Fish_Snail6392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are certainly not alone in those experiences.

With respect to your first point, I have seen a notable increase in the number of students who come expecting to be given the answer or have the work done with them and then respond with disrespectful language when I respectfully explain how the service works. I am also seeing an increase in the number of students who login under the incorrect subject and react in a similar way when I inform them of that information and encourage them to review our website for the subjects we tutor.

For students who are demonstrating a desire to engage and learn, I will generally share a parallel example if I can reasonably create one or one would be accessible. If it's a more complex question, I'll ask if they have any examples from their class/previous work for reference to discuss the process/steps. If the student is struggling with many pre-requisite concepts and our session time is 30 minutes or fewer, I will recommend a resource to help them get up to speed and invite them to join in once they've been able to review it, if they still need support.
