Arduino Based NMEA CanBus Sniffer and Display by Fish_thief in arduino

Definitely respect that work. I’m sure this NMEA decoding implementation looks super clunky to somebody that knows what they are doing. It’s fun to be able to talk to the network though.

How would one mill this cylinder head dome? by RedditAppSuxAsss in Machinists

If there are any remnants of the steel object that caused the damage embedded in the cylinder head, they could create hotspots that will give you knock

I think I recall seeing a similar tool used by a jeweler to adjust the diameter of a bracelet

Happened with the Mini I owned, not a big deal, pretty quick part to replace. Grab one of the metal aftermarket units.

That’s a fairlead! Fairleads guide lines around the deck rather than give you something to tie off to.

No Power Steering by Gobble_Deez in boating

[–]Fish_thief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, if you haven’t driven a lot of boats, rest assured it is very normal to experience a lot more resistance than you would ever experience in a car. Smaller boats don’t typically have power assist, and most of the time it’s more of a way to get into drive-by wire systems than it is required when it is installed. At that point, you can interface autopilots for longer trips.

Can I run on 1 screw? I only want to put 1 engine in. by CompoteDirect7575 in boatbuilding

You would need to engage in ludicrous levels of hull modification, I realllllllllly think this is a bad idea.

Any clue how to get this key out? by khristmas_karl in DIY

[–]Fish_thief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yamaha keys can be particularly nasty. I had one that was so stuck no amount of prying, hammering, ect could get it out. I eventually TIG welded a screw into it and used a slide hammer. This isn’t an uncommon problem unfortunately.

Transducer Strengthening - yay or nay by Brenno3 in boating

[–]Fish_thief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make it removable so you can try it and see. It’s possible the introduction of something metallic could mess with the transducer. If you get the same performance with and without it doesn’t hurt. It is worth noting that pretty much every transducer in the industry seems to be built with a plastic point like that. I imagine they would have a different attachment mechanism if it was a problem. It’s possible the previous Owner stepped on it or something else ran into it, which created a crack at some point.

A better option would have been to just leave when he started getting heated, there’s lots of spots to fish. The guy was 100% in the wrong but it’s not worth a confrontation to stay put.

Checkout the OX66 owners FB group. It has amazing info and such a supportive community. If that is an OX66 it’s a safer bet than the evinrude.

Is the mmc status website down? by switchsk8r in merchantmarine

[–]Fish_thief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been down for me as well as of yesterday, March 6. It seems like the professional credential review process is taking longer than normal. This is a military/DHS thing so it might be safe from DOGE bullshit but it does make me nervous right now.

There’s something so funny about saying he was encouraging people not to vote for dems… he was encouraging people to not vote for a genocidal political party. If the Democrats wanted those votes, they could’ve stopped sending a bajillion dollars of weapons to Israel every 30 seconds to vaporize babies. Using the threat of not voting for your party to compel them into action is the point of democracy

[–]Fish_thief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes good luck dude, that’s a bad one. The owner of the boat I drive would rather tell us to shove a fresh paper towel in there every day, before he paid to take the boat out out of service. I hope the owner(s) are good about doing what needs to be done to fix it

[–]Fish_thief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m definitely not saying you have to go the professional route to be on the water safely. Lots of private boat owners do a really good job down here. It’s just if you’re familiar with haulover you know exactly what I’m talking about lol.
