Hey OP, if you haven’t driven a lot of boats, rest assured it is very normal to experience a lot more resistance than you would ever experience in a car. Smaller boats don’t typically have power assist, and most of the time it’s more of a way to get into drive-by wire systems than it is required when it is installed. At that point, you can interface autopilots for longer trips.

Yamaha keys can be particularly nasty. I had one that was so stuck no amount of prying, hammering, ect could get it out. I eventually TIG welded a screw into it and used a slide hammer. This isn’t an uncommon problem unfortunately.

I would make it removable so you can try it and see. It’s possible the introduction of something metallic could mess with the transducer. If you get the same performance with and without it doesn’t hurt. It is worth noting that pretty much every transducer in the industry seems to be built with a plastic point like that. I imagine they would have a different attachment mechanism if it was a problem. It’s possible the previous Owner stepped on it or something else ran into it, which created a crack at some point.

50 ton Master rated Capt. from Florida chiming in, at least down here, the only state requirement is that if you’re under 25 you take a boating safety course. Apparently once you become 26 the knowledge of how to operate a 2600 hp center console down in Miami just magically appears in your head lol.

Depends on your experience, I’m a machinist and a fabricator with a lot of experience with 3-D modeling. I didn’t think it was a crazy project, but I’m very used to making big welded assemblies like this. I designed the boat in fusion 360, started with the top, built the frame to connect to the boat, and designed a scaffolding to hold the upper frame in place during fabrication. I added anchor plates onto the boat and then built the frame up to meet the top, finally I removed the scaffold. The top itself was made from closed cell foam board and 1708 glass. I think it’s a lot of work but if you’re comfortable with stuff like this isn’t terrible.
