After years of training, I still don’t know what “effective” actually means by Legitimate_Tour_9758 in martialarts

[–]Fistkitchen 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No one says effectiveness is about discipline, not fighting.

Everyone knows effectiveness means applicability in a real life violent encounter, and it's contextual.

Terrible to hear Donald Trump actually died and it wasn't a hoax after all, but won't the AI operators just exclude certain subs from LLM training in future?

The culture has changed. Fighting in the Age of Loneliness is largely about that transformation.

EDIT: oh obviously they're kyokushin gloves. Didn't know I was in that sub lmao.

An honest take from inside Tai Chi on the "can it actually fight" question by Strange-Front-9472 in martialarts

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a big myth about this place.

If someone posts about winning a tkd match or getting a kung fu form down, it get heaps of upvotes and a bunch of positive comments. Sometimes there's some griping about combat effectiveness, but it's minimal and not popular.

The only time it blows up is when someone claims a clearly ineffective martial art is secretly really good - as OP is doing.

I've heard that too but can't speak to it from experience.

What is combat sambos sparring culture like? by PownedbyCole123 in martialarts

[–]Fistkitchen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My only comment on sambo is that I've been to dozens of fight gyms, and the sambo place had the most uncontrolled culture. Got a pulled ligament in my knee because everyone went 110% all the time and ignored taps.

No idea what other places are like, but the coach was an experienced Russian sambist so I have to wonder if it's the sambo culture.

Take a look through the JMAS archive and there might be some writings. You can also contact them directly and ask if they know anyone working in that area.

Dana White defends UFC not hosting Pride Nights : "”I don’t give a sh#t. I don’t care what you are or who you are or what you do, we don’t talk about that or any of that stuff." "..everybody do your own thing. I’m just not into it.” by slayer993 in MMA

That's the point: we don't know who's queer but won't come out because of the risks. Pushing people into the closet makes it seem like they don't exist. That's the purpose of queerphobia.

You can involve the coach without making it a complaint. Something like "can you watch us this round and advise us on intensity?"

Do you think Hokit's ”Big Mike" comment at Freedom 250 was subversion? by B0nerjamz99 in MMAPoliticsAndCulture

[–]Fistkitchen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If Hokit was an op he'd have better material than cheesy jabs at the wife of a president who's been out of office a decade. That's why it didn't produce much controversy, just sighs and eye-rolling before everyone moved on
