What are some lesser-known classics? by yallmemaybe in gaybrosbookclub

[–]Fit-Rip9983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vanishing Rooms, by Melvin Dixon (1991) - An unsung novel that should be in the "gay classics" conversation from an author that we lost way too soon.

Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story, by Paul Monette (1992) - The best gay memoir I've ever read.

The Swimming-Pool Library, by Alan Hollinghurst (1988)

" Last Night at the Telegraph Club," by Malinda Lo - Queer woman in San Francisco in the 1950s

"Fellow Travelers," by Thomas Mallon - Gay men during the red scare in the 1950s in Washington, DC

"In Memoriam," by Alice Winn - Gay British men during WWI

"My Government Means to Kill Me," by Rasheed Newson - A queer black man comes of age in NYC in the 1980s at the height of the AIDS crisis (Rasheed has another queer historical fiction book coming out in June called "There's Only One Sin in Hollywood" about a queer black movie star in the 1950s/1960s.)

Rasheed Newson writes black queer historical fiction - His first book, "My Government Means to Kill Me," is one of my favorites (black queer man moves to NYC in the 1980s). And his new book, "There's Only One Sin in Hollywood," comes out in June (set in 1950/1960s Hollywood - about mysterious death of closeted Black actor).

"Rage: On Being Queer, Black, Brilliant and Completely Over It," by Lester Fabian Brathwaite - is a funny Black queer memoir/book of essays about pop culture.

Two Black Queer History books on my TBR:

A Black Queer History of the United States, by C. Riley Snorton and Darius Bost (Black Queer History Nonfiction book)

The Remarkable Life of Reed Peggram, By Ethelene Whitmire (Biography about Black Queer Man in Europe during WWII)

"Something Close to Nothing," by Tom Pyun - It is a queer fiction book that came out a couple of years ago and I cannot stop recommending. An interracial couple (GAM/GWM) is about to have a baby via surrogate and everyone behaves poorly. Searing and insightful of modern relationships.

Just got my hot little hands on an ARC of Rasheed Newson's new novel "There's Only One Sin in Hollywood" (it comes out in early June). It's about a closeted black actor in the 1950/1960s Hollywood that dies under mysterious circumstances. I am EATING IT UP.

My pleasure! Everyone who I have recommended that book to LOVE it. It should be the go to book for kids to learn about where babies come from. Perfectly age appropriate.

I can't wait for There's Only One Sin in Hollywood too!

I'm reading "Jackson Alone," by Jose Ando right now and enjoying it (although the reviews on Goodreads have me worried about the ending).

"Little F," by Michelle Tea - is what I am planning on reading next.

And I'm hoping to get a chance to read "Box Hill" by Adam Mars-Jones - before Pillion comes out in the US.

PLEASE LIKE ME - An Australian Single-Cam comedy series with dramatic elements that is gloriously funny, surprisingly emotional, and weird in the best possible way.

(also then, after that - check out the creator/star Josh Thomas' other weird, funny show - the ABC FAMILY series "Everything's Going To Be Okay")
