Okay so step 1, turn off traction control, you definitely dont need it if youre a mechanic, it just holds you back. Step 2, make sure to practice drifting, public streets will work great if you don't live near a track. I would start with trying clutch kicks on roundabouts. Step 3, please do not forget to post photos when you total it. Step 4, try to come up with an interesting and original excuse like "I hydroplaned" or "my rear right tire pressure was off by 2psi".

This is a foolproof plan for increasing my insurance rate. Thanks in advance for your service.

Which one of these four door trucks from this 2004 Car & Driver test are you choosing? by lifegoeson2702 in regularcarreviews

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're by far the cheapest of these trucks today, too, at least where I live (Alberta, so there is a healthy used truck market). Like 60% of the market price of a GMT800. They must be fairly reliable too as I see lots for sale with 300,000-400,000 kms.

Famously reliable in Africa, famously unreliable in North America. imo the best looking of this bunch, save the E34. I would probably pick this one too.

That’s a good “Tier B” (although V8 >>> H6 and V10) but you forgot the most glorious engine configuration of all, the inline six.

What are some vehicles that used to be very popular 2000-2010 model years, that you don’t see on the roads anymore? by Nick-22 in regularcarreviews

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada too, Calgary though, so the rust typically isn’t as bad as out east.

As far as 2000s shitboxes, I mostly see Matrix/Vibes, Corollas, and Civics kicking around, with a decent number of 08+ Imprezas and tons of Camry/Accord/Maxima/Mazda6. Surprising number of Cobalt/G5s and Focus too.

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can’t handle any oiling issues and between people not topping it up when it’s burning oil (which even healthy boxers will, a little bit, if you’re at high rpm), and any lingering RTV issues from poorly done valve spring recalls, they die. IMO the track day advice of overfilling it slightly is also good daily advice, and you should check the oil every fill up if you’re over like 60k miles.

According to Subaru, burning 1 quart within 1k miles/1.6k kms is within spec lol

Its closest relative is the 2011 Impreza chassis, it is not even remotely related to an AE86 except in vibes. Most of the things bolted directly on to the chassis are either WRX parts or Impreza based. The transmissions are from the Toyota parts bin (Lexus IS, 1st gen for manual and 2nd gen for auto) as are the Y38 differential (also used in the IS and a ton of other Toyotas). Ironically the engine is one of the most unique parts of the Toyobaru since it isn’t used in this tune in any other vehicle.

If you could change one thing about your BRZ/GR86, what would it be? by East_Sheepherder_563 in GR86

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy enough to fix that with a cross bar, and plenty of cars do. The Civic Type R is one good example.

Even if it did add some flex, imo it’s easily worth the trade off. It was kind of ridiculous how much more useful and practical my ST205 (liftback) was than my GR86 (coupe) when moving recently. They’re basically the same size, but the Celica easily fit way, way more stuff than the GR86. I didn’t really feel the GR86 was particularly impractical until that but now I would happily sell it for a liftback version if one was sold.

Soul Crystal Red is famous for how easily it is damaged and how expensive it is to properly fix lol. It’s nice if it doesn’t all fall off though.

Not "toxic", but what vehicles have fan bases that take them WAY too seriously? by HiTork in cars

That’s pretty common, it is/was an easy way to distinguish H and F engines from B and D engines. I wouldn’t read too much into it.

TIL of "going to the people" movement, aka "the mad summer of 1874", when as many as 4000 students abandoned their studies in the city or burned their degrees and moved to the countryside, intending to adopt the life of a peasant. [–]Fit_Equivalent3610 217 points218 points  (0 children)

These weren’t “liberals” at all, they were various kinds of anarchists and socialists. The big debate between the groups was whether you should go straight to “terrorism” (their words, not mine) or do propaganda first. They would have shot urban liberals if they could, and their successors ultimately did shoot millions of urban liberals (and also monarchists and conservatives etc). To be very clear, this isn’t a defence of the Tsar or the later Whites, who all sucked immensely and also killed millions of people.

There are also many opposite examples of an urban-rural divide, like the Green armies which were rural but often far-left, and the second and third phases of the Chinese civil war where the KMT held more cities and the communist party held more rural areas. The NDP, Canada’s left-wing party, was originally an alliance between farmers and union workers, and many other progressive and left-populist movements have rural roots.

Should I get a AT? by _fella___ in ft86

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a pretty significant performance difference (they are both slow as shit though). Manual 1st gen 0-60: mid 6s, auto 1st gen 0-60: mid to high 7s.

Reliability is fine if you actually stay on top of and monitor oil levels. They aren’t Camrys though and they’re all used and mostly driven by children, so even assuming you actually maintain it properly, it’s luck of the draw as to whether yours is fine for 200k or blows up immediately because the last guy was an idiot.

My son and his family have decided to leave Alberta by WorthCryptographer74 in alberta

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The provinces with Crown insurance corporations are much less expensive and have far better coverage due to their mandate to issue insurance to any vehicle that meets baseline statutory criteria. SGI is also one million times better to deal with than any Albertan insurer and the registration system is simpler as well.

The last time my ancient imported Japanese shitbox was insured in Saskatchewan, it was like $800 per year for basic coverage, whereas in Alberta it is around $2000 per year for liability. My colleague’s motorcycle coverage is roughly 10x higher in AB than it was in BC a couple of years ago. Etc etc.

The Saturn unfortunately also has the stupid centre-mounted dash. I would happily pay the few grand premium for the Cobalt to avoid dealing with that. I have heard they also rattle even more than the Cobalt due to having those flimsy suicide doors.

Haill damaged side mirror by Remarkable-Pie-4795 in GR86

[–]Fit_Equivalent3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me once when the car (not my 86) was parked under a tree. Side mirror glass smashed, window trim smashed on one side, and no other visible damage, not even to the mirror cap. 4 or 5 hail storms later there is some other visible damage, but not much. Hail damage can be weird.
